Fixing ghost haunts Pak-Eng series
England players’ strike averted; Riaz, Trott come to blows

London, September 21
A strike by the England team, which was unwilling to play a scandal-prone Pakistan, was averted at the last minute even as Pakistani fast bowler Wahab Riaz and England batsman Jonathan Trott grabbed each other by the throat amid continuing tension over match-fixing allegations.

England selectors were preparing to choose a second team if the main eleven had refused to play in yesterday's fourth ODI against Pakistan at the Lord's but such a possibility was averted at the last minute, the British media reported today.

But what could not be averted was the simmering tensions between the two sides coming to surface during a net session before the match.

Riaz, who was questioned by the Scotland Yard for his alleged involvement in the spot-fixing scandal that has marred Pakistan's tour, was walking past Trott during the session when the England batsman reportedly taunted him.

“How much are you going to make from the bookies today?" Trott reportedly asked Riaz.

An enraged Riaz responded by making a comment about Trott's family. The two players then threw their batting pads at each other before grabbing each other by the throat in full public view.

The squabbling pair had to be separated England batting coach Graham Gooch, who pushed Trott away and put an arm around Riaz.

Match referee Jeff Crowe summoned both the players to the MCC offices along with England coach Andy Flower and his Pakistani counterpart Waqar Younis.

The proceedings inside almost delayed the outside.

The dramatic face-off between the two players underlines the tensions that have developed between the two sides. PCB chairman Ijaz Butt's statement that England's players threw the third ODI in Oval for "enormous amounts of money" has only added fuel to the fire.

The remarks enraged the England players so much that they threatened to boycott the remaining ODIs of the five-match series before agreeing to play on "through gritted teeth." "Feelings have been high for the last 24 hours and we’re not hiding that fact," said ECB CEO David Collier.

"There were strong feelings caused by the comments (from Ijaz Butt) and that is bound to spill over. It is a closed matter," he added. — PTI

ECB demands apology from PCB chief

London, September 21
England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has demanded an apology from the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt for accusing the English players of throwing the third one-dayer at the Oval. The ECB has also threatened to take legal action against the PCB chief unless he issued an apology for his comments.

“Clearly we'll seek advice but there are quite strong laws of defamation. You can't impugn someone's integrity without having proper evidence. To date I can say that we've received zero evidence of anything having influenced any England player," he added.

Butt had told an Indian news channel that he had heard from bookmakers that England players had taken bribes to lose last Friday's Oval ODI. “There is loud and clear talk in bookie circles that some English players were paid enormous amounts of money to lose.

No wonder there was total collapse of the English side," Butt had said during an interview to the channel.

The ECB had earlier termed Butt's remarks against the England cricket team as "wholly irresponsible and completely without foundation".

"The team deplores and rejects unreservedly the suggestion that any England cricketers were involved in manipulating the outcome, or any individual element, of the third NatWest Series ODI at the Brit Insurance Oval between England and Pakistan last week," read the statement which was issued on behalf of the England team.

"The players fully understand their responsibilities as representatives of their country, and would not countenance giving less than 100 percent in any match they play," it further added. The statement was issued after a lengthy meeting between the ECB and the England team. — PTI

In a virtual quarterfinal, Royals first restricted the Lions to 159 for six and then achieved the target with six balls to spare to become the first IPL team to reach the last four stage of the T20 tournament.

Openers Manish Pandey (44) and Rahul Dravid (33) set the tone for a successful runchase with the former India skipper turning out to be the main aggressor. Virat Kohli then hit a whirlwind 29-ball 49 in pressure cooker situation to see the team through.

Earlier, Alviro Petersen smashed a 29-ball 45 while Robert Frylinck provided the late charge to help Lions post a competitive 159 after they decided to bat first.

Pandey then took the responsibility and picked up a boundary off Cameron, before smashing Phangiso for a four and a six in the 10th over.

Needing 48 off 30 balls, Kohli flicked O'Reilly for a six at deep square leg, before lofting one over the bowler's head for another six and then smashed a four through cover to bring RCB back in the contest. — PTI

Modi moves SC for removal of Jaitley, Amin

Lalit Modi New Delhi, September 21
Suspended Indian Premier League Commissioner Lalit Modi today moved the Supreme Court, seeking replacement of two members of the disciplinary committee probing allegations of financial irregularities against him.

Modi sought removal of Arun Jaitley and Chirayu Amin from three-member committee, which also has Jyotiraditya Scindya, contending that they are likely to be biased against him.

Modi filed a petition in the apex court challenging the July 15 judgement of the Bombay High Court, which dismissed his plea to stay the proceedings by the committee.

The Bombay High Court had dismissed the petition filed by Modi seeking reconstitution of the BCCI-appointed disciplinary committee.

He had also challenged his suspension from the BCCI.

Modi had contended before the High Court that BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan had launched "persecution" against him on the basis of media reports and complaints made by rank outsiders and "meddlesome interlopers" who are neither members of the Board, nor administrators. In the petition before the apex Court, Modi maintained that there should be a free and fair inquiry in all the allegations, including the conflict of interest against Srinivasan for owning Chennai Super Kings while being the officer-bearer of BCCI.

He said that the high court had summarily dismissed his petition in which he had sought an independent tribunal, preferably consisting of one or more retired judges of Supreme Court, be constituted to examine the allegations against him.

In the petition, he submitted that one of the charges against him was that he holds a proxy in one of the franchisee.

The disciplinary committee probing allegations against Modi comprises interim IPL Chairman Chirayu Amin, Arun Jaitley and Jyotiraditya Scindia.

The High Court had refused to go into the merits of Modi's petition, saying the disciplinary committee itself could decide on its reconstitution. Modi had said that he wanted a committee of independent persons and not of those who are members of BCCI as they would be biased against him. — PTI
