‘State lacks good engg teachers’
Deon (Bathinda), September 18 Addressing delegates, staff, students and media, Suresh Kumar said, “Education is a field where shortcuts do not work, but the political leaders rarely realise it. In such a scenario, the authorities of the educational institutes must do their best for the overall development of students as well as the faculty.” The principal secretary said: “It is unfortunate that a majority of the technical education institutes in the state are focusing upon producing engineers. Hardly any of these is bothered about producing good engineering teachers. In the absence of well-qualified engineering teachers, most of the educational institutes are deploying under-graduate students to teach their juniors. It is a threat to nation-building.” “It is not a secret anymore that majority of our students do not even see laboratories for once, but they do score cent per cent marks in practical exams. In the competitive era, if the state lacks basic infrastructure and teachers, it cannot expect its youth to get the jobs they dream of,” he said. Speaking highly about the potential of students belonging to rural areas, Suresh Kumar asserted, “They possess fast learning skills. Still, they do not get as many opportunities as their urban counterparts do.” The principal secretary said about five lakh students pass matriculation examinations in a year, but over half of them did not pursue their studies further, which was a hurdle in the growth of the state. Meanwhile, he advocated the introduction of six-year integrated engineering courses after matriculation. Suresh Kumar claimed that some government institutes as well as a university in the private sector had been offering the course and doing well in the direction. Later, speaking to TNS, he said there were a total of 94 technical colleges while only five of them were in the government sector. He maintained that 11 more new colleges were under construction, which would become functional from the next academic session (2011-12). |
