ETT teachers stage protest against lathicharge
Bathinda, September 13 The agitators claimed that as many as 5,752 schools, under the Zila Parishads across Punjab, remained closed today. In Bathinda, they informed that there were about 120 schools, which remained closed as the 406 ETT teachers there were on strike. Due to the ETT teachers' strike, more than 15,000 students in Bathinda schools were at the receiving end. There were reports that the administration had asked all Sikhya Karmis to open the school but the attempt was foiled by the agitating ETT teachers, who managed to convince the school staff to support them and get marked as absent. Meanwhile, declaring the state-wide strike of the ETT teachers as illegal and irrational, the state government today decided to treat all protesters as absent. Flaying the teachers for forcing the government to transfer their services from the jurisdiction of the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) to the state education department, an official spokesperson accused the teachers of making mockery of the existing system established under the 73rd amendment of the Indian Constitution to empower the PRIs to achieve the goal of universal elementary education by exercising effective control at the grassroot level to ensure accountability and efficiency. On the other hand, district president of the ETT Teachers' Union, Jagmel Singh said, "We know that by issuing such statements, the government wants to create a split between us.” “It is for sure that till the government does not release our 350 colleagues, who were sent to jail after in Amritsar and Gurdaspur on Sunday, we will continue our strike,” he added. The union president said if the state government did not accept the genuine demand of transferring their services to the education department, they would be forced to intensify their stir. He alleged that the government does not extend to them the benefits being given to the staff of the education department. Fazilka: Teaching was affected in 40 schools of Fazilka block I and II belonging to Zila Parishad today as the ETT teachers boycotted the schools. None of the 121 teachers working in these schools attended the classes, claimed Sanjeev Narang, president, Malwa Zone of ETT Teachers Union, while talking to The Tribune today. “ETT teachers would gherao Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal when he comes to attend Sangat Darshan programme in Guruharsahai constituency on Tuesday,” asserted Narang. He said until the arrested 300 teachers were released by the police, the teachers would abstain from the schools. They will not allow Badal and panchayat minister Ranjit Singh Brahampura to participate in any programme and would gherao them at every function, he said. Abohar: ETT teachers today paralysed work in 31 government schools, mostly in the rural areas. The protesting teachers led by Amrish Raheja staged a dharna at the office of the Block Literacy Committee in the complex of the Block Development and Panchayat office located on the Abohar-Hindumalkot road here. Later, they marched to the main road crossing where an effigy of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was set on fire. They warned that an indefinite strike may be the next course of action to press the government to accept their demands. (With inputs from Praful C. Nagpal and Raj Sadosh) |
