Restart discontinued power projects: UKD chief
Dehradun, August 30 Talking to mediapersons here, UKD president Trivender Singh Pawar said if the government failed to implement the same, they would start an agitation. “We are already sitting on hunger strike for the past five days and will continue till we get justice,” he affirmed. Pawar said if the projects were discontinued, this would hamper the work of the caves that were under construction. “If the work is discontinued, lots of money would be spent to shift the constructors to another sight. The result would be worse as this could lead to landslides, etc.,” he added. They have sent the memorandum to the Chief Minister requesting him to restart the work or else they would protest to get their right. Pawar claimed that the statement made by Central minister Jairam Ramesh regarding the fulfilment of damage was very childish. He said it was due to Baba Ramdev that the projects at Pala Maneri and Bhaironghati were stopped, but he should mind his own business and did not interfere in political matters. “Baba Ramdev should carry on giving religious discourse and should not try to enter politics, we are here to take care of it,” he exclaimed. Pawar said hat they wanted the government should start other beneficial projects using all rivers of the state, so that the state should be known as “Urja Pradesh”. The party also wanted the government to give 50 per cent share to the state if any of the development was constructed here. The UKD has also formed a seven-member committee that would prepare the reports on the locations where the other projects could be started, which they would later on provide to the government. |

Bageshwar-Tanakpur
Nainital, August 30 In a procession taken out by them in Bageshwar town under the banner of the Bageshwar-Tanakpur Rail Marg Nirman Sangharsh Samiti, they also raised the issue of laying of tracks between Tanakpur and Rishikesh, Rishikesh and Karnprayag, along with Ramnagar and Chaukhutiya. They said despite talks of a survey to be done by the Railways for the laying of the tracks, nothing had been done till now and nobody was aware of the developments in this direction. They said despite having sought information on the issue under the Right to Information Act, they The demand for Bageshwar-Tanakpur line has been gathering steam for quite sometime with representatives from all political parties supporting it. The members of the samiti have held protests and demonstrations in Delhi in the recent past and have been assured time and again by the leaders of the ruling party that their demand would be taken up with the Railways Ministry and the top persons in the government. In February, the Lok Sabha member from Almora, Pradeep Tamta had strongly pushed for the Tanakpur-Bageshwar rail link. Having raised the issue vociferously during Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Rail Budget speech in Parliament, Tamta had written two separate letters to Congress President and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Mamata seeking rail connectivity between these two areas. He has written that the demand for this rail link has been pending since pre-Independence days. A survey for the same was carried out in 1912, 1993 and 2006. However, the work for same could not be started till date. Several important Congress leaders have also made promises to the public to establish this link. Tamta had underlined that the link was very critical not only from the angle of economical development of this backward hilly region, but also from the strategic viewpoint. The link will be very useful for the 69 Mountain Brigade Battalion of the Army located at Pitthoragarh. The area borders Nepal and China and the only connectivity at present for the Army is through National Highway (NH) 125. Thus, a rail link will be used extensively by the Army and will serve as an alternate route to NH-125. Tamta had asked Sonia Gandhi to take up this issue with the government and had the project sanctioned under socially desirable rail connectivity proposals. |

Tomatoes will be costliest in Nov, forecast experts
Nainital, August 30 The scientists are working under a research sub-project “Establishing and Networking of Market Intelligence Centres in India” under the National Agriculture Innovation Project of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. One of the objectives of this project is to make price forecasts well in advance of sowing of selected agricultural commodities and during harvesting. The research team of Pantnagar University had conducted market survey of Haldwani regulated market, a major market for Hill Tomato in the Uttarakhand, and analysed the wholesale price data over the last 20 of this market. The team leader, Dr Jagdish Kumar said the econometric analysis indicated that the wholesale prices of tomato in Haldwani market are expected to be in the range of Rs 1,000-Rs 1,200 per quintal in September and around Rs 1050-Rs 1,350 per quintal in October. During November the wholesale prices of the tomato are expected to increase and they may be in the range of Rs 1,300- Rs 1,800 per quintal. However, the traders of the market said the prices would be in range of Rs 1,000- Rs 1,800 during these months, which are slightly on the higher side than the previous year as the tomato crop has been adversely affected in hilly areas on account of the excess rainfall. The scientists have, therefore, advised the farmers, who have adopted tomato cultivation in the current season, to harvest the tomato crop considering these forecasted prices of tomato as well as other conditions. Tomato is a major vegetable widely produced throughout Uttarakhand where it is grown both in hills as well as in plains. Nainital, Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar are the four major districts producing tomatoes and constitute about 63 per cent of the total production in the state. India ranks third in the world in tomato cultivation contributing around eight per cent of the world’s production. The yield rate per hectare in India is, however, quite low at 18 ton per hectare, as compared to the United States of America, Italy and Spain where it ranges between 50-60 ton per hectare. In India, the major tomato growing states are Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Karnataka, West Bengal, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh which together accounts for about 84 per cent of India’s tomato production. |
