5 die as jeep falls into Alaknanda
Dehradun, August 20
Five persons died and three others were reported missing in a road accident in Rudraprayag district of Garhwal today. According to state government officials, a maxi jeep (UA-07-C 9901) carrying 11 passengers on its way from Rudraprayag to Srinagar Garhwal skidded off the road at Rauteli village and went down into Alaknanda river, 300 meter deep.

Consultancy owner accuses employee of fraud

The owner of a consultancy centre based at Mahender Vihar has accused a man, who was working with her, of fleecing her of over Rs 24 lakh on the promise of getting admission to students in technical colleges. The man refuted the allegations saying that he had only taken Rs 2 lakh.

Woman commits suicide
Mussoorie, August 20
A Nepali woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself to death in the Hathipaon area in Mussoorie today. She hung herself from the ceiling of her house early morning. Her husband runs a tea stall at Purola in Uttarkashi district. He was not present at the moment the incident happened. The neighbours came to know about the incident after her 12-year-old son began crying loudly.

Councillor Anuradha had a tiff with a resident Rakesh Kumar of her ward in the Sahastradhara area on the sanitation issue today. The altercation soon snowballed with the involvement of sanitation workers and the matter reached the Dehradun Municipal Corporation office. The Mayor pacified both sides by convincing them of a fair hearing on the matter later on.

Punjabi Jagriti Rath Yatra reaches Doon today

5 die as jeep falls into Alaknanda

Five persons died and three others were reported missing in a road accident in Rudraprayag district of Garhwal today. According to state government officials, a maxi jeep (UA-07-C 9901) carrying 11 passengers on its way from Rudraprayag to Srinagar Garhwal skidded off the road at Rauteli village and went down into Alaknanda river, 300 meter deep.

Five persons were killed on the spot while three others were injured. The whereabouts of three other jeep occupants were not known and it was believed that they were drowned into the swollen Alaknanda River.

Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has expressed shock and grief at the loss of lives in the accident and asked the district administration to immediately release ex-gratia to the next of the kin of the deceased and to those injured in the mishap.

Turtles seized from aquarium shops

Dehradun, August 20
A spotted pond turtle and an Indian tent turtle were today confiscated by the forest authorities in connivance with the Endangered Flora and Fauna on Earth Conservation (EFFECT).

An NGO working on wildlife conservation, EFFECT team took assistance of Dehradun Forest Division and raided a number of shops in Dehradun Feng Shui items. These seven shops spread across Dehradun sell Feng Shui items and fish aquariums.

While raiding one such shop at Neshvilla Road, the raiding team came across a fish aquarium shop that had Indian tent turtle and spotted pond turtle. Both these turtles which are schedule 1 species were immediately confiscated by the forest authorities. The team also conducted raids at number of aquarium shops.

Raids come at a time when there were complaints of some aquarium selling shops in the city selling small turtles. This particular after the rise in the craze for Feng Shui items among locals in recent times. The turtles were supposed to bring good luck as per Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese system of spirit influences for good and evil.

The EFFECT team also pointed out that they would also now go for house to house searches to bring back turtles from to their natural environs. An EFFECT team member on condition of anonymity asserted that the campaign against illegal collection of schedule species will continue in the days to come.

It is also noteworthy that The Tribune Dehradun in its June 17 edition this year highlighted the magnitude of illegal wildlife trade involving turtles. It has also revealed turtles being sold in certain Feng Shui shops in Dehradun.

A turtle scientist with the Department of Animal Ecology and Conservation Biology of the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, Karthikeyan Vasudevan calls for effectively dealing to check illegal turtle trade particular with increasing attraction of Feng Shui items.

“Sale and purchase of turtle as Feng Shui items need to be checked,” he said adding that Asian freshwater turtles in particular are facing increasingly severe threats that need to be dealt with effectively. “Nearly 100 per cent of Asian freshwater turtles and tortoises are affected by illegal wildlife trade,” Karthikeyan observed.

Green belt lungs of developed areas: FRI Director Negi

The Forest Research Institute’s (FRI) five-day training programme on development of green belts for managerial-level personnel for the government departments concluded here today.

Dr SS Negi, Director, FRI, referred to the activities of the FRI and the role of green belts in pollution abatement. He emphasised the need of green belts in the urban areas as they were the lungs of any area and was meant for preserving a natural buffer zone between developed areas and the surrounding. He mentioned that green belts were usually an element of the national planning policy. “This policy is to address the issue of retaining areas of open space within urban environment - parks, sports areas, greenways, and areas reserved in perpetuity for agricultural use,” he said.

Dr Negi stressed that the policies so decided were to be implemented through the structure plans of the relevant local authorities. He also said it was a specialised branch of tree planting that had its objective, cultivation and management for their present and potential contribution to the physiological, sociological and economic well-being of the society.

Managerial-level personnel and supporting staff of the departments such as Pollution Control, Steel Plants, Forest Departments, NTPC, NHPC, Indian Railways and NABARD participated in the programme.

Mussorie, August 20
At a simple ceremony held at the Congress Bhawan in Mussoorie, Congress workers paid tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 67th birth anniversary today.

The Mussoorie Congress president Bhagwan Singh Dhanai, vice-president BP Kukreti, state organisation secretary Manmohan Singh Mall, remembering Rajiv Gandhi, said it was due to his futuristic vision that India had made its mark in the Information Technology globally. The local leaders also appealed the party workers to follow in the footsteps of Rajiv Gandhi to strengthen the party and nation by offering their services in every possible way.

Congress workers also observed two-minute silence in memory of the children who died in Kapkot tragedy recently. Gen secretary Javed Khan, Mahila Congress president Bharosi Rawat, Madhuri Nautiyal, Santosh Bauthiyal,Shailendar Bisht and others were present on the occasion.

1,000 saplings planted

Dehradun: Residents of Mana, the last village of Chamoli district bordering China, today planted as many as 1,000 saplings as part of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary celebrations.

It has been an annual feature in the village since 1999. The saplings planted included bhoj patra, jamunoi, deodar, kail and rhododendron. For the first time tulsi ws also planted.

Rajeshwari Mehta and Manoj Rawat led the plantation drive. Youth Congress leaders from Chamoli along with Panda Panchyata and local seers took part in the programme.

Students take part in contests

Uttrakhand Renewable Energy Development Authority (UREDA) in association with the ONGC celebrated Rajiv Gandhi Alternate Source of Energy Day here today. Large number of students from different schools had participated in the various competitions held on the occasion.

Competitions like essay writing, art and debate were held on August 19 at Doon Valley Public School. All the competitions were divided into two categories namely senior and junior group. Total of 170 students from 20 different schools had participated in the event.

While winners of various events held on the occasion were awarded today by the state Alternative Energy Minister, Rajender Singh Bisht, other participants also received admiration. He has also announced to conduct free educational trip for the students to energy parks at the state level.

"Every year, this day is celebrated among school children aiming at various schemes of Alternative Source of Energy that can be utilised for supplying energy at far flung rural areas with no electricity. Its a kind of an awareness programme for children," Nitesh Kumar Jha, Additional Secretary (energy) UREDA.

Also present at the event were KV Ravinder, Managing Director, ONGC, AK Tyagi, chief project officer, UREDA, A J Singh and C P Aggarwal, vice chief project officer.

Reviewing the various schemes being operated by the Central government as well as the state government for the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Haridwar and Roorkee Uttarakhand SC/ST Commission Chairman Chanar Ram has directed the concerned officials of speeding up the process so that this deprived lot gets optimum use of the schemes.

Terming any offence or harassment against the SC or ST people as a grievous one Chanar Ram while in his review meetings at Haridwar and Roorkee municipalities emphasised on taking cognisance of the complaints of people coming from these section of society.

Pointing that he is receiving several complaints wherein police stations are not registering criminal as well as civil complaints of people belonging to the SC/ST sect Chanar Ram giving heed to the police officials said that they should ensure instant lodging of such complaints should be made otherwise the commission will have to act sternly on the denying police officers.

He warned the concerned officers that adequate action will be taken against them if utilisation of funds as well as making them access to the SC/ST people is not properly done. Hani Ram presided in Haridwar attended by municipality chairman Kamal Johra, Executive officer BL Arya and several officers of various departments. While in Roorkee municipality chairman Pradeep Batra, EO PK Bansal attended with concerned officials of various governmental departments.

Consultancy owner accuses employee of fraud

The owner of a consultancy centre based at Mahender Vihar has accused a man, who was working with her, of fleecing her of over Rs 24 lakh on the promise of getting admission to students in technical colleges. The man refuted the allegations saying that he had only taken Rs 2 lakh.

Complainant Minakshi Bhatt told the police that Saurabh had met her in an education fair on the Parade Ground in Dehradun some time ago and from there they started knowing each other. And later she gave him the job.

She also alleged that he had promised to arrange admission of six students in the DIT, JP (Solan), and the Petroleum University and only one of them got the admission.

He had taken lakhs of rupees from each students’ families through the complainant and neither did he return the amount to her nor get them admission in these institutions, Minakshi alleged.

Saurabh refuted the allegations and said: “I have only taken Rs 2 lakh from them. She is a cheat herself and has also got me beaten up by her men for which I have lodged a complaint at the Dalanwala police station.

Circle Officer (Dalanwala) Premender Dobal said he had asked them to get everything in written with related documents tomorrow. The Circle Officer will look into the matter in detail when both the parties will produce written complaints.

Woman commits suicide

A Nepali woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself to death in the Hathipaon area in Mussoorie today. She hung herself from the ceiling of her house early morning. Her husband runs a tea stall at Purola in Uttarkashi district. He was not present at the moment the incident happened. The neighbours came to know about the incident after her 12-year-old son began crying loudly.

According to the police her name was Kalpana Kshetri (32), wife of Dhan Bahdur who use to work as domestic servant. The Mussoorie police was yet to ascertain the reason of her death. The neighbours are of the view that extreme poverty could be the reason for her step.

Suicide bid

Dehradun: The woman who beat her husband, an ITBP sub-inspector (SI), yesterday with her brother and father in full public view consumed poison today. She was taken to the CMI and her condition is said to be stable now.

The relatives of the SI and woman’s had come for a hearing in the district court yesterday when in anger, the woman and her relatives made the husband run while beating. However, the advocates and the people present on the court complex intervened to stop them.

The husband and the wife have a martial dispute and had come for the hearing in the court.

CII proposes special tourism zones

The members of the Parliament from Uttarakhand and industry captains concurred that tourism, agriculture and related industry and knowledge industry could be the key drivers of growth in the hills. The interaction organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in Delhi, deliberated upon sustaining the growth momentum in the state, hill development and balancing imperatives of growth and environment.

On the tourism front it was felt that community based, environment-friendly tourism should be the focus areas. The MPs welcomed CII’s suggestion of creating special tourism zones for an integrated and planned tourism development. Given the unique climate and soil conditions of the state, it was also felt that value added agricultural activities like cultivation of exotic fruits and vegetables, value addition through processing and leveraging the herbal wealth of the state held immense potential.

Deliberating on the enablers for the above sectors, the interaction focused on infrastructure development. Having identified better accessibility as a key need, the interaction threw up many interesting ideas like the gravity ropeways, heli-taxis, transportation on water channels and railways on cogs. Improved health infrastructure and infrastructure for employment oriented vocational skills were identified as other important areas requiring attention and resources.

The session was attended by Harish Rawat, Union Minister of State of Labour and Employment, KC Singh Baba, MP from Nainital, Satpal Maharaj, MP from Pauri Garhwal, Satyavrat Chaturvedi, Member of Rajya Sabha from Uttarakhand and Tarun Vijay, Member of Rajya Sabha from Uttarakhand.

The CII delegation was led by RM Khanna, Chairman, CII Northern region and Rajiv Berry, Chairman, CII Uttarakhand State Council.

Arya Samaj holds drive against animal sacrifice

The Arya Samaj has undertaken a drive against the practice of sacrifice of animals at the altar of temples in the region. The drive assumes special significance in the light of the approaching Naina Devi fair during which a large scale of animal sacrifice is witnessed.

A spokesperson for the Arya Samaj said, “We have constituted teams comprising five to six persons that are moving from village to village. The teams visit panchayat ghars, hospitals and schools and deliver lecture appealing to the people to desist from the practice of animal sacrifice”. He said the people, who consume non-vegetarian food could consume it at their home, but there was no need to kill animals on the premises of the temples.

The Arya Samaj activists are distributing pamphlets which say that animal sacrifice does not have any permission either in the Vedas, Puranas and even the epic Mahabharata. The pamphlets read, “We are living in the 21st century. This is a scientific era that has no place for irrationality and blind faith. There is a need for a collective effort to get rid of irrational religious and social practices that have their genesis in the middle ages”.

There is an appeal to the people to do away with the practice of sacrifice in the state which people proudly refer to as the Dev Bhoomi. The pamphlets call upon the people to show affection towards animals as they are also the children of the same God which people worship. Instead, there is a need to sacrifice the animal instinct that is present amongst the humans.

Panel to deal with ‘VIP patients’

On any given day the Doon Hospital receives more than 50 request letters from ministers, MLAs and even former Chief Ministers for providing free treatment and medicines to patients mentioned by them, believed to be poor.

Now, a committee has been constituted that will guide the three hospitals based on the genuine nature of the requests that seem to pile every day. Though the government already provides free investigation, treatment and medicines to persons with BPL cards, the so-called poor patients recommended by the VIPs continues to trouble the hospital authorities who are under great pressure to provide treatment.

"Now a committee headed by Dr Sudhanshu Bahuguna, Director Doon Group of Hospitals, including Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) of Deen Dayal Upadhayay Coronation Hospital and District Women's Hospital as other members would go through these requests and will the last word on the issue," said Dr RK Pant CMS Doon Hospital.

In the last couple of weeks, doctors and nurses at OPDs and emergency wards at the three hospitals had to face unpleasant situation by the patients recommended by the VIPs. Besides the provision of free medicine is only increasing the burden on the hospitals.

Unable to pay the amount to the local contractor who was supplying medicines under Local Purchase Order (LPO) the supply of medicines has been shut at the Doon Hospital, since August 1.

The Mayor pacified both sides by convincing them of a fair hearing on the matter later on.

Rakesh is the husband of the woman who stood against Anuradha in the election for the councillor seat and has spoilt relations with the councillor ever since then.

Anuradha blamed him for seeking lame excuses to give vent to his frustration whereas Kumar slammed her for not doing her duty as a councillor by neglecting the heaps of garbage in the locality. The sanitation workers who got embroiled went to the extent of manhandling the councillor and her husaband, and Kumar as well. They also raised slogans against Anuradha in DMC compound. Mayor heard all but avoided making any comment on the issue.

Punjabi Jagriti Rath Yatra reaches Doon today

To pay homage to the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the Uttaranchal Punjabi Mahasabha has organised a Punjabi Jagriti Rath Yatra which will continue till August to 23. It will begin from Gurgaon and culminate in Haridwar.

The procession will reach Dehradun tomorrow and cover several places in the city on August 22. This was declared by president of the mahasabha SP Kochar at a press conference held here today.

The members of the mahasabha have also made an appeal to the people to participate in this event as a mark of gratitude for those who laid down their lives for the country.

Income limit for free legal aid up

Residents of the state having an annual income of up to Rs 1 lakh will now be entitled to free legal aid.

The proposal mooted by the Uttarakhand Legal Aid Authority to increase the income limit of beneficiaries of free legal aid from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh has been granted approval by Governor Margaret Alva.

A statement issued by the authority said people whose annual income from all sources does not exceed Rs 1 lakh would be entitled to free legal assistance, advise and services of lawyers.

According to Member Secretary Prashant Joshi, this step has paved the way for the poor of the state to get instant, convenient and inexpensive justice.
