Computer teachers block traffic
Kharar, August 29 The president of the Computer Teacher Union, Punjab, Jaswinder Singh Bhullar, said the Punjab government would convene a meeting on August 30 with the agitating teachers. He said today’s agitation was to warn government to take them seriously for tomorrow’s meeting. The union leaders said during its election manifesto the SAD-BJP had promised that computer teachers would be regularised, but it has not been done so. In 2005, these teachers were deployed at a salary of Rs 4,500 per month, which would be raised to Rs 10,000 per month. They alleged that government was dilly dallying over the issue. |

Teenagers rob petrol station salesman, held
Mohali, August 29 The suspects, Shivam (18) and Vicky (15), after getting petrol worth Rs 1,050 filled in their car threatened the salesman with an axe and took away his bag. While fleeing from the spot they hit a girl who was driving a Kinetic Honda scooter. The victim is said to be in a serious condition. While Shivam is a resident in Sector 45, Vikram lives in Phase IX here. Both were arrested soon after the accident as their car broke down after the accident. A case under Sections 279, 337, 338, 382 and 506 of the IPC has been registered on a complaint lodged by the salesman of the petrol station, Anil Kumar. The SHO of the Phase VIII police station, Sanjeev Kumar said the duo had been arrested. The bag of the
salesman only contained Rs 400 cash.
Arms, ammo seized
Mohali SSP GPS Bhullar said during checking of vehicles and of suspicious persons, a person who was riding a red coloured motorcycle (HR TH 7497) was intercepted and signalled to stop, but he tried to flee from the spot. On being intercepted, he gave his name as Lal Chand alias Lali. On being searched a .12 bore country-made pistol with two live cartridges were recovered from him. He also failed to produce the documents of the motorcycle. He was found to be a proclaimed offender in two cases. A case under the Arms Act has been registered against him by the Kharar police.
Cheating
The Mohali police has registered a case against Surinder Pal, Rupinder Kaur and Amrit Pal on a complaint lodged by Navdeep Kaur, a resident of Amritsar. Navdeep alleged that she got married to Surinder Pal Singh on November 2005, but after few days her in-laws started harassing her for bringing more dowry. |

PGI sweeper commits suicide
Chandigarh, August 29 The police said the death came to light around 12 noon, when Prem’s wife returned home from the market and found her husband hanging from a ceiling fan hook. She went to the market around 9:30 am. The police was informed about the incident, which lowered the body and rushed the victim to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The police said no suicide note was found from the spot. Prem had been under depression due to illness and had been taking treatment from the PGI. He was survived by his wife and four children. The police initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code. |

Woman commits suicide
Zirakpur, August 29 The family members who are living in Andhra Pradesh have been informed and further investigation would be started after their arrival, the
SHO added. The deceased has been identified as Monika, who got married a year back with Myanyes Anjnil, both residents of Andhra Pradesh. The SHO said the incident came to light when Anjnil, who works as a cook in K-Area mess, reached his home in the evening and saw his wife hanging from the ceiling fan. He immediately informed his official about the incident. They called up the police, who took Monika to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. The police official said the girl allegedly committed suicide when no one was present in the house. |

Sahil’s exploits win Shivalik academy trophy

Chandigarh, August 29 Capitalising on opportunities that came to his way, Sahil stole the show in the title clash by netting three field goals. On the other hand, strong contenders Surjit Academy tried valiantly to stay in the match but to no avail. Sahil opened the account in the 16th minute, following a move from the left flank. Both teams then raided the ‘D’ area of the either side several times till the halftime but in vain. The scoreboard read 1-0 in favour of Shivalik till the halftime. The 37th minute brought some relief for the Jalandhar team, as Amritpal restored parity at 1-1. However, Sahil stole the game with his twin goals in the last 10 minutes of the game. He struck second time in the 62nd minute and sealed the 3-1 victory for the team in the 69th minute. The winners pocketed Rs 15,000 as cash award, while the runners-up received Rs 10,000 as prize money. The best goalkeeper award (Rs 500) went to Harinder Singh (Surjit Academy), whereas the best fullback, the best half and the best forward awards were given to Gursewak Singh Jr. (Shivalik), Pardeep Singh (Surjit Academy) and Sahil Dabas (Shivalik), respectively. |
Power golf to make India debut in city
Chandigarh, August 29 Power golf is a viewer event and a huge prize money tournament in
the US. Addressing mediapersons here today, Chandigarh Golf Club president BS Gill described it as the “T-20” version of golf. “In power golf, the
driver can send the ball gliding to distances of almost 300 yards,” he said. The brain behind the Maxx Power Golf is Chandigarh’s Sikhsimran Singh Gill (Dimpy), who created history on the US soil by becoming the first Indian golfer to make it to the Remax World Long Drive finals. His longest drive is recorded at 394 yards, almost four times the distance covered while hitting a six in cricket. Dimpy, who owns Maxx Power Golf, said his aim was to hold the first international long drive contest in the city. The winner of the Chandigarh Maxx Power Golf would also have a shot at the $ 5 lakh purse at the Remax World Long Drive competition at Mesquite, Nevada, US. Dimpy has been actively involved in training and organising such events in the US for many years. Now, he feels that there is a lot of raw talent in India that needs to be tapped. His company will bring to India the special equipment and training aids for golfers who wish to enhance their golfing skills as well as long-drive skills here in Chandigarh. He acknowledged the help extended by Chandigarh Golf Club president BS Gill and promised to make club the Maxx Power Golf headquarters outside the US. He also appointed Arvind Dutt, Ajay Gujral and KD Joti to run its operations in India. According to Capt GS Ghuman, chairman of tournament & finance committee, Chandigarh Golf Club: “The Chandigarh event will be conducted from November 23 to 29. The pre-qualifers will be held from November 23 to 27 and the finals on November 28 and 29 on the driving range

DPI (S) Pawan K Sharma distributed as many as 402 trophies to the winning schools. “Our city has been placed 14th out of 39 units of the School Games Federation of India. This is encouraging,” said Sharma.
