Sirsa, August 8
With ninety blood bank teams, hundreds of doctors and 7,000 volunteers assisting over 2,000 people donating blood simultaneously, Dera Sacha Sauda today shattered its earlier record in blood donations (17,291 units on Oct 10, 2004) in a day. Hundreds of enthusiastic men and women queued up in tents and in the open to give blood.

The camp was inaugurated this morning by dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh with the target of collecting 50,000 units. The teams, according to dera sources, had collected over 38,000 units by 5 pm.

The dera authorities had placed 2,500 beds at Sachkhand Hall measuring 2 lakh square feet. It was packed to capacity, giving the doctors and paramedics a tough time to cope with the heat and humidity.

Blood bank teams had arrived from places as far as Hyderabad and Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Rajasthan and Punjab, besides various districts of Haryana.

“We issue 300 bags of blood per day through our blood banks in Pune and Pimpri. Though we meet our demand at the local level the rest of the year, the period between March and August is a difficult one with the colleges closed and very few camps held,” said Sanjay Chaudhary, director, Pune Serological Blood Bank, here with his team of 40 paramedics. Dr Saraswathi, chief operating officer of the blood banks run by the NTR Memorial Trust at Hyderabad and Guntur, was at the camp with two teams comprising three doctors and 45 paramedics and planned to collect 6,000 units of blood.

Former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Chandrababu Naidu is the managing trustee of the NTR Memorial Trust.

“We already have letters of requests from government hospitals of Guntur, Kakinada, Warangal, Tirupati, Kurnool, Adilabad and Narasaraopet, where about 5,000 units will go for emergencies, while 700 units and 300 units will be taken to our blood banks in Hyderabad and Guntur, respectively, ” she added. Dr Akbar Ali, medical officer and leader of the team from the South Matadin Goel Blood Bank, Hyderabad, said he had attended several camps in his career spanning 15 years, but never witnessed a camp of this magnitude.

Most teams claimed that they issued blood collected at such camps to the needy patients free of cost and at nominal charges ranging between Rs 500 and Rs 800 per unit to others.

“We feel elated after donating blood as it will save precious lives,” said Anju (46) and Isha (42), sisters-in-law. Rinku (32), a schoolteacher, had come from Kurukshetra while Monica (30) was here with her husband Shekhar (32) from Rohtak.

Sukha Singh (38) from Batala was in the queue to donate blood since 6 am after he had registered himself as a donor.

“We have set up 200 registration counters for the convenience of devotees. Separate counters have been set up for men and women,” said Pawan Insan, a dera spokesperson.

“With the blessings of Guruji (dera chief), no complication has ever been witnessed at the blood donation camps, medical camps and eye camps held by us so far,” he added.

Prime land given away for a song
State exchequer loss in crores; residents’ body asks CM to intervene

Sunit Dhawan
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, August 8
Public land in Gurgaon worth thousands of crores has allegedly been leased out to a private party for setting up amusement parks at throwaway prices, causing a huge loss to the state exchequer.

The prime chunks of land that has been given away for a song include a 25-acre plot in Sector 29, City Centre, a 17-acre plot in Sector 52 and another 16-acre plot in Sector 52 of Gurgaon.

While the local HUDA officials and other authorities concerned are tightlipped over the issue, all-out efforts are being made to hand over the said chunks of prime public land to the private player.

So much so that a road passing through one such chunk of land is being covered with loose earth to facilitate the beneficiary.

Alarmed at the gravity of the matter, a joint front comprising the local Federation of Residents Welfare Associations (FORWA) and Gurgaon Citizens Council (GCC) has written a letter to the top state authorities, including the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary, asking them to intervene in the matter and get the aforesaid deals cancelled in public interest.

In an interaction with the media here today, representatives of the joint front of residents’ bodies, including FORWA chairman Dharam Sagar and GCC president RS Rathee categorically alleged that the land allotted in the name of amusement parks had caused a loss to the tune of Rs 2,950 crore to the state exchequer.

The front leaders maintained that the 25-acre plot in Sector 29 had been given on a 33-year lease at a nominal price of Rs 56.25 crore, as against the prevailing market price of Rs 2,016.67 crore for the purpose. “Similarly, the 17-acre plot in Sector 52, which could have been leased out for 33 years at Rs 548.53 crore as per the prevailing market price, has been given away for a meagre Rs 38.25 crore,” they asserted.

The representatives of residents’ bodies further pointed out that the 16-acre plot in Sector 52, which could have fetched Rs 516.27 crore (base auction value), had been leased out for Rs 36 crore.

“We have learnt with deep dismay that prime public lands in Gurgaon have been allotted to private parties at throwaway prices for setting up amusement parks,” sates the letter, copies of which have also been sent to the Chief Administrator of Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and the Financial Commissioner of the state’s Finance Department.

“All this has caused a huge loss to the state exchequer to the tune of 95.77 per cent, amounting to a whopping Rs 2,950.97 crore. It is respectfully urged that this whole matter be investigated and all three deals be cancelled in public interest,” the letter added.

State to develop fruit, vegetable market: Hooda
Our Correspondent

Sonepat, August 8
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today reiterated that there would be no power shortage by next year when all four new power plants in the state would start generating power.

Addressing public meetings at Pugthala, Purkhas, Kheri Gujjar, Gannaur, Ghasoli and Bhigan in the Gannaur Assembly constituency of the district, Hooda said the state government was fully aware about the shortage of irrigational and electricity supplies for the agriculture sector and every effort was being made to increase these supplies.

Hooda said the state government had given top priority for accelerating development activities and to increase educational facilities and in order to achieve these objectives, the plan budget of the state government had been gradually increased from Rs 2,200 crore in 2004 to Rs 18,260 crore in 2010.

The state government had cleared setting up of a state-of-the-art fruit and vegetable market in 500 acres near Gannaur, he said, adding that an agriculture and food processing sector was being developed between Bhigan and Kurar. Referring to the demands of the area, the CM announced to spend Rs 5 crore on various village development activities.

Voices on OBC status for Jats get louder
Geetanjali Gayatri
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 8
The demand for Other Backward Class (OBC) status for Jats is slowly gathering steam in Haryana’s Jat hinterland with the All-India Jat Mahasabha stepping up pressure to seek reservation for the committee at the Centre as also in the state.

While meetings are being held to mobilise the Jat community, the mahasabha is ensuring that resolutions too are passed to press for their “genuine demand”. The mahasabha, which has already organised meetings at nine district headquarters, including Bhiwani, Hisar and Rohtak, is now gearing up for a show of strength on August 20 in Bhiwani. “We want the Gurman Singh committee report implemented in toto. The committee had recommended reserveation at the state level for 10 castes, including the Jats.

However, during the regime of Bhajan Lal, the report was only partially implemented with OBC status being granted to the Gujjars, Ahirs, Sainis and the Lodhas. Six castes, including the Jats, were left out,” explains the state president of the mahasabha, Om Prakash Mann. While the demand is getting unequivocal support from the Jat community all over the state, Jat political leaders in the state are yet to speak their mind out. Their cause is now being espoused by president of All-India Kisan-Khet Mazdoor president and Jat leader Shamsher Singh Surjewala.

“It seems only reasonable that the Jats should be given OBC status at the Centre and in the state because other land-holding classes, economically, educationally and socially on a par with the Jats, have already got reservation. In Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, MP and Gujarat, the Jats are a part of the OBC category. Why are we being deprived of the benefit in Haryana,” he asks.

Batra, who was here to build public opinion on the issue, said he would meet Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda with the demand. In case the demand for granting reservation to more communities was accepted, job opportunities to Punjabis would be further diminished.
