Bankers urged to help flood-hit
Chandigarh, July 30 Gulati said the state had suffered extensive damage. Power, roads, canal and drinking water infrastructure had been severely damaged in some parts. “Though a detailed girdawari to assess the actual damage to the crops is on and the results are expected tomorrow, the damage to public infrastructure and private property alone forms a major part of the Rs 1381 crore that we are seeking from the Centre,” she said. Asked about the Government of India’s reluctance to extend relief to the state on account of non-usage of the Calamity Relief Fund, she said norms for the use of this fund were fixed. “We have a corpus of over Rs 400 crore under this head, but this can be used only for relief in case of crop loss. The aid we are seeking from the Centre is for the damage to public infrastructure.” Earlier, presiding over the meeting, Gulati called upon the banks to reach out to every citizen so that “we can translate the concept of financial and credit inclusion into reality.” She urged the bankers’ forum to impress upon the RBI and the Centre to slash the rate of interest for BPL families from nine to 12 per cent per annum, to not more than seven per cent, normally charged for agricultural advances. Among others present were Nagesh Pydah, executive director, PNB, field general manager, PNB, AK Gupta, A.M. Sharan, Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Finance, PRaghavendra Rao, Financial Commissioner, Development and Panchayats, HK Talreja, Chief General Manager, NABARD, and AKMisra, general manager, RBI, New Delhi. |

Post-floods, villagers battle dirty water
Fatehabad, July 30 “Drinking water being supplied to our villages is of very poor quality. It stinks and people are falling prey to diarrhoea,” alleged a resident of Sadhanwas, one of the worst-affected villages. Similar complaints have come from Chimmo, Talwara and some other flood-affected villages. The health authorities took 81 samples of drinking water for the orthotoledine test to check residual chlorine in the Ratia area of the district, but 29 of these failed. Confirming the reports, Dr VK Jain, senior medical officer at the community health centre, Ratia, said 14 samples of drinking water had been sent to Sirsa for bacteriological tests too, but they were yet to receive reports of those samples. Bhanwar Lal, Executive Engineer of the Public Health Department, however, claimed that the drinking water was being supplied after proper treatment. The XEN further claimed that the department had its own laboratory and of the 141 samples tested there this month, only two were found unfit. Bhanwar Lal said the problem was due to leakages in pipes, which had since been repaired. |
Raid bares foeticide case
in Ellenabad
Sirsa, July 30 Dr Pramod Sharma, who led the raiding party to the hospital where the abortion took place, said the woman had informed them that her ultrasound test was conducted at a private nursing home in Fatehabad. According to Dr Sharma, some anonymous caller tipped the SDM office here that a woman had been admitted to a private hospital situated on Mamera Road in Ellenabad town on Thursday. On the directions from the SDM office, a team from the general hospital went to the hospital with a police force and found a woman lying on a bed and crying in pain. The woman, according to the health authorities, complained that she was bleeding profusely. The doctor running the private hospital claimed that the woman was there for treatment of her fever. Later, a team of two gynaecologists from Sirsa went there and found that
it was a case of illegal abortion. The woman underwent abortion four months after pregnancy, the doctors maintained after the check-up. The doctors sealed some records of the hospital
and also collected some evidence of the illegal abortion. The government doctors shifted the woman to the general hospital, Sirsa, in view of her condition. SHO of the Ellenabad police station Jagdish Rai said the police had yet not retuned from Sirsa with the medical reports and added that an FIR would be registered after the reports arrived. |
