Kanwar Yatra ends today
Haridwar, August 7 Lakhs of Dak Kanwars fetched Ganga water from Brahmkund and Har-ki-Pauri while lakhs are still in the holy city to fill their vessels as only one day of the Kanwar yatra is left. The mela police had a tough time managing the enormous rush of Kanwariyas that was pouring in from all corners while at the same time, it had to manage normal traffic throughout the Kanwar route. With tomorrow being the final day to offer Ganga water at Lord Shiva temples, the city almost seemed to be on the move as everywhere Kanwariyas were seen running alongside Dak Kanwars. At Har-ki-Pauri and Pantdeep mela area, there was a buzz, never seen before in previous Kanwar Yatras, claimed localites. Dak Kanwar vehicles started at
a fierce pace, but had to slow down due to heavy traffic congestion on the highways. Jogging Kanwariyas, attired in sporty dresses, blew whistles to clear the path of their main Ganga-jal bearer who was followed by the Dak Kanwar vehicle. This was the norm throughout the day. All mela police officials had taken charge at the Kanwar stretch, particularly on the highway leading to Har-ki-Pauri as most Kanwariyas started their journey from there. Mela police personnel, elite commandos, bomb disposal squad, sniffer dog squad, horse squad and jal police specialists oversaw the proceedings. In addition, intelligence wing personnel, dressed as Kanwariyas, mingled with the crowd and pacified situations whenever some conflict with traders or police arose. 40th PAC Commandant Anant Shankar Takwale, positioned at the stretch leading to Har-ki-Pauri on NH-58, said that despite the enormous rush this time, the cooperation of Kanwariyas was commendable and this made their job a little easier. Parking at Rodibelwala for two-wheelers was jam packed throughout the day. Sandeep Kumar, parking lot attendant, said that about 50,000 receipts were issued in just a span of a few hours. At other parking lots too, there was not an inch of space left with vehicles being parked on outer roads. Now all eyes are set on tomorrow when this year’s Kanwar Yatra concludes as in all probability a new record of the number of Kanwariyas thronging Haridwar will be created. Already eight million plus devotees are in the city and the highway leading to the city is still abuzz with these orange clad-pilgrims. |
