Monsoons and 3 fresh collapses reaffirm old-building threat in city
Amritsar, July 23 The Tribune spotted the century-old buildings located near the Dharam Singh Market. These dilapidated buildings, at present, have been accommodating a number of families on rental basis. Most of the portions in these buildings have collapsed. The roofs of these buildings are supported with wooden planks. It is an irony that even though the MC was fully aware of the “upcoming disaster” and had identified 113 such old buildings, declaring them unsafe; no concrete plans, to demolish them safely, could see the light of the day. Just this morning, a part of one such old building at Gali Laala Wali in Katra Ahluwalia area, collapsed. A substantial number of people, strolling nearby, had a narrow escape. Last night, another old building at Tahli Wala Bazaar, which housed four shops, collapsed due to heavy rains. Immediately after the damage, news about the collapse of another old building in Bartan Walla Bazaar flashed on the news portals. Nevertheless, panic was created among the public two days ago when similar kind of incidents occurred at Katra Ahluwalia Bazaar, Namak Mandi, Gali Chhajju and Guru Bazaar areas. Luckily, no loss of life was reported except the damage to the goods stored in the shops. But the cause of concern is that these were the locations which cater to the daily needs of the people and would, most of the hours, be found to be occupied with heavy rush and the administration should take steps to deal with old buildings to avoid any serious mishap to occur here. Ironically, most of the public service centres are being run from the century old buildings. Thousands of residents visit these public centres to fulfill their government formalities. The public grievances cell of the Punjab State Power Corporation, located at Jandiala guru (Kakkar), is being run from an old building which is on the verge of collapse. MC Commissioner DPS Kharbanda
We are well aware about this issue. Just today, our team is carrying out the job of felling one such building at Katra Ahluwalia area. Apart from this, seven more such buildings are on our list which would be felled soon. Actually, there is legal hitch. Cases of scores of old buildings have been entangled in courts for years together due to conflict between the tenants and owners. There, we do not interfere. In many such instances in the past, it would be later known that the cases of these buildings have been lying pending with the courts. The owners would want them to be demolished because it would be advantageous to them to get rid of years’ old tenants. |
