The Vice-Chancellor in a power point presentation explained that the system, which was prevalent in most parts of the world, was favoured for its transparency. He said this was based on continuous testing and evaluation and friendly to both teachers and students. In this system every student was supposed to give two minor and one major examination besides one quiz-based on MCQ in one semester. He said student would be evaluated on a 10-point scale and awarded grades from 10 to 1. He said minimum pass grade would be 4.5. In this system students were evaluated by the same teacher who taught them. Students were shown their scripts after evaluation, he added. There was no revaluation and moderation in this system. He said the grades when converted into percentile according to conversion formula would place the students of the varsity in an advantageous position over others. He allayed all fears of some faculty members about the grading system. He said grading system would ultimately benefit the students. Online counselling schedule for MBA/MCA announced

When he tore opened the It was Sofit Mango flavoured soya milk worth Rs 20 for 220 ml. The pack was purchased from one of the Reliance Fresh stores here and the expiry date on the pack said it could be consumed till October 2010. “I felt slimy fibrous material in my mouth. Upon cutting the pack open, I found that it contained a big mushroom like fungal growth. I was shocked to see that such a reputed company maintains so low quality check standards,” Shauryavir said. He shot a complaint to the consumer care wing of the company through their |
Plantation drive launched
Amritsar, July 16 The campaign was initiated under the banner Dastak with a slogan “Aao bachaen ped, paani aur bitiya rani”. Out of 1,000, about 100 saplings were planted at Government School, Bhaini, Gumanpura. Association general secretary Gurbhej Singh said Subedar, a follower representing Baba Sewa Singh, will join the drive tomorrow when saplings would planted at Baserke village, Bhaini, Gumanpura, Kotli, Tatal, etc. “The organisation has procured about 500 plants from the government nursery at subsidised rates, besides as many as 300 plants were donated by Baba Sewa Singh. About 200 plants were grown by the organisation itself in their own nursery,” he added. He said the saplings of champa, hibiscus, kaner, mango, neem, alistonia, gulmohar, etc. would be planted at these designated places. He said the members of the organisation, during a visit to these villages, witnessed pathetic conditions while negligible efforts had been made to make the surroundings clean and hygienic. |
IMA organises dharna
Amritsar, July 16 Just on the lines of its counterparts across Punjab, activists of the Amritsar chapter of the IMA today launched their protest by holding a dharna in IMA House. Later they submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner to be forwarded to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh urging him not to allow the passage of the Bill. Citing the Bill as “non-friendly to the common man”, Dr C.L. Thukral, president of the IMA (Amritsar), said, “If the Bill gets clearance, it would hit the common man first. The reason is that the cost of the treatment would be enhanced manifold in the wake of meeting the costly standardisation of clinical equipment, infrastructure and supporting staff. We demand that with the implementation of the Bill, only a few medical centres, which would be able to meet standards of institutes like Escorts, would survive. A very little percentage of people can afford treatment at Escorts,” he opined. Once implemented in toto, the Bill would enable the offices of the civil surgeons concerned to make a stringent check on the parameters being adopted by Civil Surgeon Chandanjeet Singh said the Bill would not hamper the interest of common patients and the cost of treatment would have negligible enhancement. “Rather, the implementation of the Bill would help tightening a noose around the clinics run by non-qualified doctors,” he said. The proposed Bill will also enable the government to create prescribing minimum standards for healthcare services. After being pending for years, the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Health Ministry for adoption of the Bill in the Lok Sabha and now it has to be put forth in the Rajya Sabha for the final nod. Meanwhile, the association also opposed the implementation of Bachelor of Rural Healthcare by the Ministry of Health and dissolution of the MCI by an ordinance. |
Rusted water pipes wreak havoc on residents’ health
Amritsar, July 16 The contamination-level of the water can be gauged from the fact that the stored water turns black in a couple of days. Reason: The rusted water supply pipes require urgent replacement. These eroded pipes lead to leakage and thus contamination. The mixing of sewerage water also cannot be ruled out. Jagdish Singh, a resident of the area, showing the bottle, expressed his shock over the level of contamination in the drinking water. “No points for guessing what this contaminated water would do to the human body if the residents continue to drink this dirty water for a few more days,” rued Jagdish, who brought the matter to the knowledge of Mayor Shawet Malik. The residents claim that they have complained a number of times to the MC authorities who rectify the problem by changing a part of the pipe with leakage. However, the problem crops up again and again when some other part of the water supply pipes develops leakage. “The MC should change the old and rusted pipes by replacing them with new ones in order to supply safe drinking water,” they pointed out. Arun Kumar, another resident of the area said the area falls under ward number 25, belonging to a Congress councilor. He said a tubewell has been passed for the area but due to alleged discrimination of being a Congress ward, it has not been installed till now. Shawet Malik said he would send his team in the area to rectify the problem. He admitted that being an old system, the problem crops up again. The corporation would replace the water supply system step by step, he added. |
Mobile art: Dress up your vehicle but within the limit, say law-enforcers
Amritsar, July 16 This mode of communication is prevalent in two-wheelers and is seldom found on the number plates of four-wheelers. The reason for this is equally interesting - unlike two-wheelers, four-wheelers command ample space to cater to the creative imagination of the owners. The four-wheelers have huge windshields to express the “attitude” of owners whereas the two-wheelers only have number plates through which owners can vent out their fondness. However, in the process, they have ended up tampering with the number plates. Eye catchy one-liners and trendy pictures are obviously printed to attract the attention of people around but they are a great source for distracting attention. Besides, they provide an alternative to anti-social elements to escape from being noticed after committing a crime. Fancy number plates have definitely contributed to the rise in the income of painters. It is like adding value to the product. They charge handsome sums to paint choicest words and pictures. Besides, pasting stickers is also in vogue. However, these words, symbols and statements are examples of creative expressions expressed the wrong way. It was noticed that one-liners do not last more than three words usually and a majority of them are in Punjabi. For instance, “Sadd Na” (Do not be jealous), “Rees kar” (imitate me) and the list of pictures of a boat, a dancing girl, boxing gloves, swords, rifles, etc., is inexhaustible. Meanwhile, in the entire scenario, the registration number becomes a casualty as it is pushed aside (or sometimes is hardly visible) to make way for the art part. The number indeed cannot be viewed from a distance. When contacted, District Transport Officer Jasbir Singh said display of registration numbers in small font was punishable under the Motor Vehicles Act. He said as per the provision, the authorities could impose a fine ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000 against violators. He said although currently no specific campaign was under way to nail these violators, the authorities kept watch and instructed them to change them. |
Differences crop up among Chief Khalsa Dewan members
Amritsar, July 16 He charged the president and the vice-president of transferring fixed account to the tune of Rs 71.77 Ankhi, also member in charge of Central Khalsa Orphanage, claimed that the funds deposited in the account could not be utilised for any purpose other than related to the welfare of the children of the orphanage. He said the interest levied on the amount was used for various welfare projects of the inmates of the orphanage. He said he would sit on a hunger strike from July 23 against the alleged “illegal act” of Charanjit Singh Chadda and Dr Santokh Singh, president and vice-president, respectively, of the CKD, and would fight tooth and nail to recover the amount. However, Dr Santokh Singh, who is officiating president of the diwan, said Ankhi was operating the account independently, which was against the decision of the organisation. He said the account was closed and amount was transferred in the account of the CKD as per the decision taken during an executive committee meeting held recently. |
