Commonwealth Express tells IT story of India
G.S. Paul Tribune News Service
Amritsar, June 25 An exposition-on-wheels, spread across six coaches of a theme train, named “Commonwealth Express”, at Amritsar Railway Station, tells many such startling facts, which were seldom known by any. The concept was good but due to lack of its adequate publicity, the response to this effort was found to be negligible with the residents of Amritsar, apparently, confused about the arrival time of the train. While visiting the coaches, it was found that only NCC cadets, Scout and Guide volunteers and passengers who came to board trains were there to witness the exhibition. A quiz programme related to computer technology and information technology was also organised inside the train. Ritesh, Project Manager, Centre for e-Governance, Delhi, said the idea was not to advertise but to educate people about the information technology available for making their lives convenient and easy. “Still, we feel that footfall is of non-serious people. We have organised a quiz contest in the fifth boggie based on what people had witnessed in the first five boggies, but hardly could they answer anything. May be tomorrow, we may get serious footfall,” he opined. Meanwhile, the Commonwealth Express started its journey from New Delhi on June 24. This was the second day of its journey and Amritsar is the first stopover on the itinerary. It will stay at the Amritsar station for two days, from June 25 to 26 and will remain open to visitors between 10 am and 7 pm. The Commonwealth Express will be travelling through 49 cities across the country. The “IT story of India” will be told through the six coaches by way of back-lit transits, front-lit digitally printed posters, short informational films, dubbed in regional languages, etc. The exhibition has been planned in a way that the six coaches tell about different facets of the information and communication technology (ICT), each dealing with one particular facet. A curtain raiser, the first coach presents an overview about the ICT, how it has impacted life, how it is changing the ways of life and working as a “change agent” bringing social and economic transformation. One of the interesting aspects of the first coach is the story of communication over the years, from smoke signals in the primitive times to the SMS and emails. The second coach showcases a cohesion of efforts taken by the DIT and several other organisations in the sphere of ICT, their contributions towards bringing ICT to the life of the common man and at the same time making India an “IT superpower”. One of the focal points of the coach is the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP), a major initiative towards the concept of “good governance”. The third coach deals with the impact of ICT in various sectors - social, health, education, agriculture and ecology. It presents the role of the ICT as a major unifying factor, bringing the world together. The fourth coach presents the ICT from the perspective of industries, its key role in the growth of industries and the country’s economic rise. The theme of the fifth coach revolves around Common Service Centres (CSCs), an initiative to provide a platform to the people to access various information and services as well as an interface between government agencies and the citizens. The sixth coach has been designed as an auditorium. Internet, video conferencing and mobile communications are some of the highlights of the exhibition. |
Cong leader, wife booked for fraud
Amritsar, June 25 He later disposed off the funds, released for procurement of computers for Vidya Bhavan School by opening a fake account in the name of H.S. Arora by producing an unidentified person in the bank. In his investigation, Gagandeep Singh, in charge, economic offences wing, indicted the Congress leader and his wife, along with two other unidentified persons. A case was registered under sections 419, 420, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC on the statement of his mother-in-law Narinder Kaur. However, Bhatia, terming it a politically motivated case, said it was an attempt to defame him. “It is a family and property dispute which is the main cause behind the complaint. The case was registered to harass me,” said Bhatia. He said he and his wife were granted interim bail by the court. He pointed out that it required more investigations to find out the involvement of any bank employee in the presence of whom the account was opened, besides which member of the school authorities misused his/her power for bungling the funds. Meanwhile, Bhatia said different police officials conducted inquiries earlier too, but nothing came out of it. He said grants were released and utilised in the school itself. Moreover, he questioned the fact that the cases were being highlighted after the death of H.S. Arora. |

Just last evening, the Health Department seized thousands of tablets and capsules worth Rs 65,000 from a medical store in Katra Sher Singh Market. “We are not letting any stone unturned to stem the problem. Police Commissioner Varinder Kumar said the Police Department was also doing every bit to end the menace. “Something is also wrong with government policies as there is an urgent need to keep a close tab on the production of synthetic drugs. Enquiry window closed for ‘insiders’
Neeraj Bagga Tribune News Service
Amritsar, June 25 Local resident Hitesh Mehra travelled to Delhi in the Super Fast Express train last week. Having entered platform No 1, he went straight to the enquiry window to know about the exact arrival and departure of the train. He was shocked to be greeted by a piece of plywood in place of the open window. When he knocked at the glass enclosure, the employee sitting inside gestured him to approach from the other window which is located outside platform No 1. He had to go out of the platform to know the exact time of his train. Again to re-enter the platform, he had to pass through security checks and show his ticket to the employees guarding the entrance. Jaswinder Singh, a city resident, said another major problem with the enquiry was of not attending calls. Often they made calls to enquire about the departure or arrival timings of the train. “However, it is a rarity to listen to the voice on the other side of the phone when you dial for the enquiry,” he alleged. Despite repeated attempts, Divisional Railway Manager Vishweshwar Dubey, based at Ferozepur, could not be contacted. |
