Mechanical engineering top choice again, but for boys

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, July 6
Regaining the top position after a gap of four to five years, mechanical engineering has once again become the most preferred choice of the candidates trying for admission to B.Tech this year. The trend has been observed going by the seat allotment for boys in the PTU counselling.

For the past few years, computer science and electronics engineering had become the most sought-after stream throwing mechanical on number three or four position. But preferences seem to have changed once again.

Of a total of 7,263 seats allotted to boys, a maximum of 2,265 seats have gone to aspirants of mechanical engineering. Electronics and communication engineering ranks number two on priority with 1,823 boys choosing it. Computer science engineering has gone on number three slot with 1,304 boys taking seat. Civil engineering and IT rank four and five, respectively, with 523 and 492 seats getting filled.

Chief coordinator, PTU-CET, Dr N.P. Singh, said the students had started realising that mechanical engineering was a universal branch. “Anyone taking admission in this stream can go for all kinds of placements, including that in a construction company, and get a good package,” he cited a reason.

Assistant Director of Lovely Professional University said a similar trend had been observed in admissions in his institute. “The students have actually become smarter. They are after a wider choice in placement. With a computers stream, a student gets restricted for placement only in IT sector, but with a mechanical engineering degree in hand he can apply in a variety of segments, including automobile company, manufacturing sector and even IT sector.

However, for girls computer science engineering and electronics engineering still continue to be more preferred streams perhaps because of an easy office job. Of the total 3,904 applicants, 1,685 girls have taken admission in computer science and 1,141 in electronics stream. IT, electrical engineering and civil engineering are the next streams rank-wise with 601, 121 and 52 students opting for these.

Taking a cue from Mother
Dharmendra Joshi
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, July 6
An article about Mother Teresa’s unrelenting services to the downtrodden, appearing in the 1970 edition of the Reader’s Digest magazine, inspired a leading physician Dr. NK Khosla to become a philanthropist.

After going through the article, Dr Khosla, along with two of his close friends Dr SK Sharma, a leading surgeon, then posted at the Gulab Devi Hospital and an industrialist Des Raj Jain, decided to do something for the society.

Initially, they started treating especially needy TB patients free of cost.

Subsequently, they constituted the NGO Manav Sehyog Society in 1973, which currently runs five dispensaries with well-equipped laboratories charging nominal fees, and runs three schools. Of the three, two schools are for slum dwellers (free-of-cost) and a Manav Sehyog School, affiliated with CBSE at Shahpur village on the Mithapur-Pratappura Road, provides concession to nearly 30 per cent needy students and Vocational Computer and Stitching Centres in different parts of the city.

Patron of the society, Dr Sharma (82) told The Tribune, “The entire staff posted at the dispensaries and the schools is well qualified. They are adequately paid for providing quality health and education facilities to the needy. Even a staff of three teachers, headed by a retired head-master KK Sharma, has been deputed for the two open schools being run free of cost for slum dwellers at Bania Bageechi on Ladowali Road and at Qazi Mandi.”

“The NGO gets as much as Rs 30 lakh in donations and membership fees annually from different persons including several NRIs, whereas the expenditure on running and maintaining the dispensaries, schools and the computer centre is nearly Rs 45 lakh per annum. The rest of the money is collected from the nominal fees charged from the patients visiting the dispensaries, the students of the CBSE-affiliated school and of the vocational computer centre,” he added.

Having remained the President of the NGO for nearly 25 years, Dr Khosla further said “Only Rs 10 are charged from patients visiting any dispensary for the first time and during the follow-up visit, only Rs 5 are charged.” “The land, in different parts of the city, for setting up dispensaries, schools and the vocational centre has been provided by some NRIs and different philanthropists of the city,” added Khosla.

Jalandhar, July 6
The Punjab Schedule Caste Land Development and Finance Corporation today awarded foreign education loan to a girl for pursuing her higher education in New Zealand. It is for the first time that the SC corporation has given grant for foreign education.

The SC corporation awarded education loan of Rs 5 lakh to Neerja (23), who would be pursuing a professional degree course in software engineering. The education loan was awarded by Chairman of the SC corporation Pawan Kumar Tinu and district SAD (Urban) president Gurcharan Singh Channi.

Talking to The Tribune, an excited Neerja said it was an advertisement in a newspaper from where she got to know about the education loan facility.

“This is a dream fulfilment for me. All thanks to the SC corporation for turning my dream into reality. It is due to the timely help of the corporation that I have been able to realise my dream,” she added.

“The plus point of the education loan is that it is easily available and that too on 8 per cent annual interest. What else we could have asked for? The SC corporation employees helped us in completing all formalities.

Though the entire cost of studying abroad would amount to approximately Rs 10 lakh, but easy education loan made things easy for us,” said Vimla the mother of Neerja.

The girl completed her B.Sc (computer science) from Amardeep Singh Memorial College, Mukandpur. A resident of Aujla village in Phillaur tehsil she had been looking forward to take up higher studies abroad but financial constraints restricted her way.

Just last year the SC corporation raised the limit of the education loan for the students from Rs 40,000 to Rs 5 lakh. Under the education loan scheme, meritorious SC students pursuing medical, engineering, MBA, MCA and PhD programmes across the country or abroad are eligible to avail themselves of a loan Rs 5 lakh on 8 per cent annual interest.

It is due to the timely help of the corporation that I have been able to realise my dream. — Neerja

Avinash Bhakri

Jalandhar, July 6
For those who have heard his voice for decades on the Dehati Programme on Medium Wave 873 khz on AIR, he is Master Ji, the man with the endearing, rustic voice who introduced his countless rural listeners to better tips and techniques in agriculture.

Born at Adampur, Avinash Bhakri, was brought up in a rural environment, stuck to the rural stuff ‘cause ‘that’s what’s closest to my heart’.

Thirty eight years and three and a half months. Bhakri, who retired about a week ago, chants the perfect count of his stay at All India Radio.

But talking of beginnings, as a 21-year-old youngster, he had stumbled upon the AIR job through an advertisement in Employment News.

During his first day at the radio station, he was supposed to be trained but he picked up the 'mandian de bhaa, kheti samachaar’ bits so fast that by the end of the day he was making announcements on his own.

“The next day, a special meeting was called and I was assigned the dehati programme. Names were being thought up for the character that I’d be. I chose Master Ji ‘cause it sounded like a guy who’d be free from religious ties.”

So began the daily sessions of the secular Master Ji chanting ‘langhe aao’ to his friends on the Dehati Programme, lending precious ‘kheti bari’ tips to his ‘kisan veers’ in the chaupal-like mood that they created together on the programme.

It wasn’t long before Master Ji became a household name in Punjab and it’s no wonder that he and his colleagues at the programme are given massive credit for ushering in The Green Revolution in Punjab.

Barring Dehati Programme, during the course of his career, Bhakri has anchored shows like Unnat Kheti and Baal Bari programme for the rural kids, besides anchoring the magazine programme Chann Resham on Sundays.

Bhakri has also acted in more than 200 radio plays in Hindi and Punjabi.

Though he has played the hero in roles like Heer, Ranjha and Keema Malki, his favorite role is that of the unconventional drug addict for the AIDS-awareness play Alvida.

Bhakri has also been a field reporter for his agricultural programmes, and has many interesting incident up his sleeve. “In the villages, some farmers had a quicker access to PAU techniques than others. So anyone with a better crop was considered to be keeping secrets. I had advised one such wary farmer to get his soil checked and make use of gandhak in the fields rather than be sceptical about his neighbour. The trick worked and later, whenever I met him, he gave me a lot of thanks.”

Bhakri has also penned lyrics for memorable Punjabi songs like Sadi chure vali baanh utton gana khol de (Jagmohan Kaur); Ni nande puare hatthiye; Gora tera rang par nain kale goriye (Hans Raj Hans) and other numbers by Ajit Kaur, Gurdip Singh and other singers.

Bhakri, has made his mark in the west too. He is a known name in the radio circles of London and Southall and has been hailed by the regional newspapers of the west time and again. He boasts of students abroad.

Ludmila, a producer-in-charge at the Moscow radio who came to India to study Punjabi at the Panjab, University, Chandigarh, trained under him for many months. On her second visit to India, she made it a point to visit Bhakri, whom she considers her guru.

Bhakri was recently awarded by PAU - along with which he has undertaken many radio projects - at the varsity’s Kisan Mela.

So after him are things gonna change for the Dehati Programme? I don’t think so. As long as they stick to the pattern, people are going to love the programme just as they used to earlier.

What are the plans now?

I plan to help my daughter with her IAS preparation and help my son with the mobile shop of his.

Is he gonna miss radio?

No worries, I’ll be around.

‘Lack of database hampering research in country’
Amaninder Pal

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, July 6
Lack of an expert regulatory authority and database of surgeries performed and their prognosis in the field of joint replacement is hampering indigenous research and development in India.

In the absence of such database and study, Indian doctors have not made any major breakthrough, as per the disease pattern and treatment needs of Indian population, but are content with following the practices developed by their western counterparts.

This was stated by the world-renowned joint replacement surgeon Dr Jens G. Boldt, who is employed in prestigious Saint Vinzenz Hospital, Dusseldrof, Germany. He was here to perform live surgeries in a two-day workshop on “Minimally invasive hip and knee replacement” organised at a local hospital. Earlier, he had performed live surgeries in 52 different cities of India.

He, however, claimed that doctors performing such replacement surgeries in the Indian subcontinent are equally expert and even the equipment, techniques and operation theatre facilities are at par with those used in the Western world.
“Sadly, such expert doctors and world-class facilities are available only in a few hospitals in this country,” he asserted. Stressing over the need of such database and studies, eminent joint replacement surgeon Dr Shubhang Aggarwal said the government could consolidate database of cases of joint replacements and their outcome by setting coordination among all private and government institution, where such surgeries were being performed across the country.

Centre making poor fight to pave way for MNCs: NGO
Kusum Arora

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, July 6
Expressing concern over the killings of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans in the wake of the ongoing Operation Green Hunt at Chattisgarh, Director of NGO Vanvasi Chetna Ashram Himanshu Kumar said the anti-people policies of the government are taking their toll on the security forces.

The Union Government is perpetrating the fight between the poor to pave the way for MNCs in the rich state of Chattisgarh, he said.

“Even we feel concerned at the recent spate of killings of innocent CRPF jawans. It is a pity that the jawans are losing their lives at the behest of the wrong policies of the government,” he added.

Himanshu was here at the local Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall to address a convention against the ongoing Operation Green Hunt at Chattisgarh. The convention, which started on July 1, would culminate on July 16 in Punjab.

Attacking the union government for its biased policies towards rising privatisation in Chattisgarh, he said the union government is selling iron at Rs 400 per metric tonne to Japan whereas the same is being sold to Indian businessmen at Rs 6,000 per metric tonne.

“This clearly indicates the biased policies of the central government towards the MNC culture. This is a major cause of concern as the best iron, mines, jungles and minerals are available at Chattisgarh”, he added.

Security forces have labeled tribals as ‘naxalites’ and torture them.

“Even the picture of tribals is shown in poor light. An image has been created that all tribals are naxalites, which is wrong,” he maintained.

He was accompanied by Abhey, a tribal boy from Chattisgarh, who was here as a part of the convention. He added that even in Punjab, people who try to raise their voice against various atrocities and fight for their rights are not being heard.

“If people in a prosperous state like Punjab are not being heard, how can we expect any mercy for those living in the dense forests of Chattisgarh”, he said.

He also pointed out that nearly 50,000 people from Chattisgarh have fled to Andhra Pradesh fearing attack from security forces in the ongoing Operation Green Hunt. “While another 50,000 are held as ‘captives’ at Salwa Judum. However, the fact is that the security forces make use of weapons and ammunition to terrorise people at Salwa Judum”, he added.
