No anti-rabies vaccine in health centres
Jalandhar, June 10 Owing to the dearth of vaccine, people bitten by dogs and reporting at community and primary health centres and even civil hospitals are forced to purchase the medicine from private chemists at exorbitant prices of Rs 325 to Rs 350, which should otherwise be available at Rs 100 at health centres. The severity of the problem can be gauged from the fact that every day, up to eight cases are reported only at the district hospital, Jalandhar, and as per regimen, each patient needs three to five shots of vaccine as a preventive measure, which cost Rs 325 to Rs 350 each. “These are the cases being reported only in one hospital. Besides, those reporting at hundreds of private clinics, there must be hundreds of people reporting to chemists in the peripheral areas too. In summers alone, we encounter 20 to 25 such cases on an average,” said Dr Manvinder Singh, consultant pathologist, Civil Hospital, Jalandhar. As per sources, the district got the last supply of the vaccine in February 2009 and before that in April 2007. “We received nearly 1,000 vaccine units but the stock was exhausted within three months. The amount of patients can be ascertained from this figure,” said a civil hospital health worker. Dr Ajay Sahni, Deputy Medical Commissioner, Punjab Health System Corporation, said instructions said that in case of a high demand, the health authorities could make a local purchase of the vaccine. However, due to high costs, the authorities are cuffed even to purchase vaccine of their own. “After making purchase at Rs 300 approximately, it is not feasible to deliver the vaccine at Rs 100 per shot in the hospitals,” said Dr Chander Mohan, Medical Superintendent, Civil Hospital,

Football Frenzy
Jalandhar, June 10 Nostalgic about the bygone days, the players from the hinterlands of Jalandhar were seen displaying soccer skills and shared their fond memories with the college football team members. The boys, who were picked up by the leading football clubs of the country,
owed their success to their grass-root training on the college grounds. Talking to The Tribune, Warundeep (23), who has been playing with the Churchill Brothers, Goa, for the past four years, said it was the major turning point of his life when he was selected in the club. “It was here at the college that I picked up my basic lessons in this sport. I was lucky enough to get a chance to play with a leading club like Churchill Brothers. But, still scores of talented football players fail to reach the top slot owing to lack of proper coaching,” he added. He also played with the Tata Football Academy before joining the Churchill Brothers Club. Warundeep passed his Class XII from the college in the 2002. “In the name of clubs we have no option apart from JCT, Phagwara. While the world is going gaga over the FIFA World Cup, we are lacking behind due to lack of opportunities and government support,” he said. Another player Rakinderjit Singh (25) from the JCT, Phagwara, maintained that the regular coaching coupled with coaching from their coach Vijay in the college was of immense help. “Within days of joining the college, we picked up the technical aspects of the game,” he added. A midfield, Rakinderjit, also played for the prestigious I-League and was selected during the trials of the JCT, Phagwara. While earlier he also played for the Mahilpur Academy. However, he lamented the lack of proper infrastructure, coaching and government support to push the game in the state. While Harpreet Singh (27), who is playing for Air India, Mumbai, said though he started playing quite early but his football career picked up after he joined the Khalsa College football team. “I really feel for many good football players who are forced to leave the game owing to lack of job opportunities. And not everybody can reach the top football clubs. The state government’s Sports Department should make some efforts to help develop football nurseries at colleges ad schools,” he said. Initially, this defender played for the JCT, Phagwara, and then joined the Mahindra United Football Academy, Mumbai. “I also played for the East Bengal Football Club and then was picked up by Air India,” he maintained. Among other players from the college academy is Karan Atwal (22), who has been playing for a year with the Mohun Bagan Athletic Club (MBAC) in Kolkata. The footballer played for almost two years with the Tata Football Academy and then joined MBAC last year. Football coach of the college Vijay said ever since these boys joined the college team, he was sure of a bright future for them. “We have been providing the best facilities and diet to our players in the college. JIT drops land from acquisition; Cong alleges nexus
Jalandhar, June 10 PPCC Secretary Virendra Sharma and DCC President Arun Walia said there was a plan to acquire over 125 acres of land for developing the new housing colony near Surya Enclave by Jalandhar Improvement Trust (JIT). Elaborating on the issue, Congress leaders, accompanied by DCC Vice President Jitendra Sharma said even local bodies minister Manoranjan Kalia had made a public statement some time ago, which was carried in several newspapers, that 125 acres of land would be acquired to develop a new colony, but the JIT issued a notice of acquisition of just 94.97 acres land. The JIT issued the notice under section 36 of the Punjab Town Improvement Act, 1922, carried in several newspapers on June 7. It has been clearly stated in the notice that 94.97 acres land would be acquired. Congress leaders questioned why the JIT issued notice of acquiring only 94.97, whereas the local bodies minister had stated publicly that 125 acres land would be acquired. Answering their question themselves, they said the JIT left over 30 acres of land from being acquired, due to
the nexus of several colonisers and ruling party leaders and they further alleged money had exchanged hands for the same. Interestingly, a case was already filed by the Parkash Singh Badal-led SAD-BJP government against the then local bodies minister Chaudhary Jagjit Singh and the then Chairman of the Amritsar Improvement Trust Jugal Kisore Sharma, for allegedly committing a similar deed regarding a colony at Amritsar, during the Amarinder Singh-led previous Congress government.
The Congress leaders further criticised the proposal of the construction of a 120-feet-road between Qazi Mandi and Surya Enclave. They said there was already a kutcha road of 57 feet between the two colonies, so there was no need to displace several residents for widening the road as no such wide road is located either at Qazi Mandi or at Surya Enclave.

Electricity poles stand in middle of road
Jalandhar, June 10 Three electricity poles, carrying high tension wires, stand in middle of the road and the department has hardly given any thought of shifting them since after the widening of the road. Illegal parking of rickshaws and encroachment by vendors on the link road have added to traffic woes. Residents of the area alleged that the electricity poles, encroachment by vendors and weekly vegetable market give them hard time. Charanjit Sharma, a resident of Gurunanakpura West, lamented that the authorities were waiting for a major tragedy to happen. In absence of streetlights, the chance of vehicles ramming into these poles is maximum. The parking of rickshaws on a T-point at Laddowali road has further aggravated the problem. Moreover, the department has not erected any signboard or light reflectors cautioning the motorists on either sides of the road, claimed Sher Singh, a commuter from
