Summer camp
: The participants in the summer camp organised by the Natrang, an NGO, in the LRS DAV Senior Secondary School here honoured Harsimrat Kaur, a modeling star from Chandigarh, during the training session on Thursday by presenting a memento. Stage director Tony Batish from Bathinda and Rahul Pathak gave tips on acting. Magician Sukhdev unfolded some secrets. Dance director Ved Parkash, Boogie Boogie fame, conducted a class on the basics of dancing while Natrang director Vikas Batra prepared the participants for a short play, which has to be presented on Sunday.

Online counselling: Online counselling for admissions in polytechnic colleges all over Punjab has been started as per directions issued by the Technical Education Board, Subhash Ahuja, principal of the Abohar Polytechnic College here informed on Thursday. This would be done in three phases and the first phase would commence from June 24-29.

Late running of trains: Expressing dissatisfaction over late running of trains and “unnecessary detention” of a passenger trains at stations, commuters of the region sought probe in this regards. In a letter written to additional general manager (AGM), Northern Railway, vice-president of the Rail Passengers’ Association, Northern zone, Hanuman Dass Goel, demanded that the railway must run trains on time as late running of trains causes inconvenience to passengers, particularly senior citizens, women and children. Citing instances of “detention” of some trains, Goel said some trains even detained around three hours forcing passengers to undergo torture during the ongoing summer.

Man run over by train: A man was run over by a train near Lalru on Wednesday night. The deceased, identified as Jogi Singh Bhadur, worked at a petrol pump in Sarsini village. The dead body was handed over to family of the deceased after an autopsy. A case under Section 174 IPC has been registered.

Patwari, four others booked for fraud
: A patwari, along with four others, has been booked by the police for fudging with the documents of a piece of land in Tarkhan Majra village. In his complaint to the police, Ram Singh of Tarkhan Majra village alleged that patwari Gurmel Singh, in connivance with Mahesh Nanda, Taranjit Singh, Nirvair Singh and Ranjit Kaur, tried to encroach upon his land in the village by mutating the documents. The Economic Offences Wing of the police investigated the matter and a case was registered against the accused. Police officials said efforts were on to arrest the accused.

NREGA funds: Funds under NREGA scheme would be directly deposited into the bank accounts of respective panchayats so that beneficiaries get their payments timely. ADC (development) Sukhwinderpal Singh Mrar said this while inspecting NREGA works at Morinda. He visited villages of Doomchheri, Kotli, Rauni Khurd, Amrali, Chaklan, Badwali and Nakhsalpur and reviewed nine projects at these villages. Mrar told villagers, beneficiaries under NREGA, as well as village panchayat members that soon awareness camps would be held across the district to apprise people of the benefits of NREGA scheme.

Jammu
Fire victim dies
: A fire victim, Jyoti Devi, succumbed to her injuries here today. Joyti was injured in a fire incident at her house in the Gharota area of Jammu on May 24, the police said. It said Des Raj, grandfather-in-law of the deceased, died due to burn injuries on June 6, while her grandmother-in-law was struggling for life at a local hospital here, it added.
