Army chief seeks legal protection for force
Dehradun, June 23 Replying to a question pertaining to human rights violation cases, he said, “About 99 per cent of the human rights cases have been found false while against true 1 per cent cases, the Army is initiating strict action against it. There have been several false allegations, but the Army has always taken serious note of the matter, which have been found true”. While on alleged land scandals in the Army, he said, “The fact will only come to light after the Code of Inquiry submits its report. But the Army will not bear anyone who is found guilty.” Will women candidates be trained in the IMA? “Not in all, but in some wings women are provided with permanent commission and for which we have already written to the Centre to take a final decision,” General Singh replied. IMA ’70 batch rekindles memories
The 1970 passed-out batch of the Indian Military Academy (IMA) today rekindled old memories during the re-union of their batch at their alma mater. Officers of the 36 NDA/45REG/ and 29 TGC courses reunited for two days, June 23 and 24. The reunion started with the wreath laying at the IMA War Memorial, where the officers paid homage to the martyrs who have laid down their lives in the line of duty and brought honour to the nation, Army and
IMA. Nostalgia brought tears of affection in the eyes when they recalled the wonderful times spent together in the hay days of their life. Time indeed stood still
for the 150 officers and their wives, who got together to re-live an era gone by. Chief of the Army Staff Gen Vijay Kumar Singh was the cynosure of all eyes. As a gentlemen cadet, he bagged the Rajputana Rifle medal which is awarded to the gentlemen cadet adjudged best in tactical ability, initiative and leadership. He, as the senior Under Officer (Cassino Company) also led his company to lift the Chief of Staff Banner, awarded to the company standing over all first. The course also has five serving generals which includes Vice-Chief of Army staff Lt Gen PC Bhardwaj PVSM, AVSM, VrC, SC, ADC (who is one of the highly decorated officer), Lt Gen BS Nagal, PVSM, AVSM, SM, ADC, Lt Gen CKS Sabu, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, Lt Gen RK Loomba, AVSM and Lt Gen AKS Chandel, PVSM, AVSM, ADC. The course presented a memorable memento to the IMA. |
Oppn Leader Harak comes clean on land deal
Dehradun, June 23 Harak today dared the Chief Minister to order a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case so that the truth comes out. “Besides ordering a probe into the allotment of hydro power projects and change of land use of a chemical factory at Rishikesh, the Chief Minister should also include the case of my land purchase in the cases to be probed by the CBI,” he said. At a time when allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state government has been flying thick and fast regarding allotment of hydro power projects and land use change of a closed chemical factory at Rishikesh, the Leader of Opposition, who had been vociferously raising these issues in and outside the state Assembly, finds himself in a controversy. Last week, Mehmood Hasan has alleged that more than 100 bighas of agriculture land belonging to Sushila Devi, alias Savitri Devi, a resident of New Delhi, was fraudulently bought through an alleged fake power of attorney by Harak Singh Rawat in the name of his wife Deepti Rawat and another person Luxmi Rana. The Chief Minister’s office had ordered a probe by the police and revenue officials in the case. It was alleged by the petitioner that he was a caretaker of the land of Sushila Devi who died in 1974, but Harak on the basis of a fraudulent power of attorney usurped the land. The inquiry by revenue and police officials recommended that in case the said land deal was done fraudulently, action should be taken to vest the said agriculture land in the state government and legal action against all those involved. However, Harak today termed the allegations as false and the government inquiry into the case as a move to settle political scores by the Chief Minister. He said the land was purchased by his wife through a power of attorney duly registered in New Delhi on December 5, 2002, in the name of Virender Singh Kandari. He also refuted the allegation that Sushila Devi died in 1974. He produced a death certificate of Sushila Devi, alias Savitri Devi Verma, wife of Ram Lal Verma, which stated she died in the Holy Family Hospital on March 13, 2005. “None of the officials of the state government, including Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) verified the facts of the case and on the bidding of the Chief Minister has initiated proceedings against me,” he said. Harak further said he had been in physical possession of the land and had been paying land taxes regularly since the purchase of the land. “No one raised any objection at the time of the purchase, but it was only at the behest of the Chief Minister that such things are being concocted against me after so many years,” he said. But, Harak charged that the Chief Minister had stooped low to hit him. “We had decided not to attack each other personally when he took over as Chief Minister, but he has started it all and should be prepared for the consequences,” he added. |
Martyr Vikram Batra’s parents unveil his bust
Dehradun, June 23 “In secondary-level books there should be mention of such heroes who laid down their lives for the country sake. When sportspersons and actors can be mentioned in the academic books of children why not the real life heroes?” Batra asked. “In the history books where nation heroes of pre-Independence are mentioned, the details of fighters who died during wars for saving the country should be compiled,” the proud father added. He also felt prominent chowks and roads should be named after the war heroes. “In Delhi there are some chowks and roads named after some persons whom people even don’t know. Then why not they be named after the sons of the
nation, who sacrificed their lives for the country?” Batra, who retired as a gazetted officer from the Education Department in Himachal Pradesh, told The Tribune. He said he was very happy with the honour given to them and every body should follow in the footprints of such a great hero. Capt Batra’s mother Kamal Kanta Batra said the honour given by the Army and the nation to the martyr is great. The parents together unveiled the bronze bust of their son.
Ultramodern mess named after Batra
The Chief of Army Staff, Gen VK Singh, inaugurated Vikram Batra Mess on the Indian Military Academy (IMA) premises here today. Captain Batra, who had immortalised himself through his gallant action during Operation Vijay (Kargil war) is synonymous with the slogan “Yeh dil mange more”. The state-of-the-art mess is built on approximately 21,000 sq metres (3.6 acres) and has a seating capacity of more than 1,200 individuals. It is certainly one of its kind mess in this part of the country, claimed the
IMA authorities. It has completely automated kitchen equipment, dish-washing appliances, solar water heating storage tanks, metal galvanised rust-proof roofing, a standby generator, a 24-line EPBAX intercommunication system and a central public address system. Gen VK Singh was also pleased with the fact that the facility had been provisioned with a library, a bar, a billiards room and a TV room to cater for the interludes and various functions which are likely to be held at this institute in the future. “This is a world-class institute. Due to good facilities here the morale of the cadets and officers will get a boost. In comparison to our time in the IMA, the facilities have increased and changes have been made towards betterment,” he told reporters after inaugurating the mess. |
