P’kula takes lead
Video conferencing begins in court 
complex, 17 cases disposed of 

Panchkula, June 17
Taking a lead over Chandigarh and Mohali, the Panchkula district today started video conferencing in the court complex here today.On the very first day, cases of 17 undertrials lodged at the Ambala jail were disposed of by three judges, including Chief Judicial Magistrate Rakesh Singh, Judicial Magistrate Jyoti Birbian and Jaiveer Hooda.

Habit-forming drugs seized
Mohali, June 17
A chemist shop was raided at Mohali village and around 24 types of habit-forming drugs were seized from the shop. The shop was raided by district drug inspector Ramandeep Kaur after she had received complaints about the wrong types of allopathic medicines being sold there.The drug inspector said thousands of proxyvon, spasm proxyvon capsules, microlite tablets and codine syrup bottles were seized.

The vice-chairman of the Punjab School Education Board Dr Suresh Tandon, today released a book “Eco guru” written by subject experts of the Board.It’s a reference book on environment education for all teachers of schools affiliated to the Board.

Now, SHGs to deliver driving licences
Panchkula, June 17
Taking a step forward towards women’s empowerment in Haryana, the district social welfare department has decided to hand over the task of distribution of driving licenses and vehicle registration certificates to self-help groups in which the majority of members are women from below poverty line families.

Zirakpur to have slaughterhouse
Zirakpur, June 17
The Zirakpur Municipal Council is planning to set up a slaughterhouse at Gazipur village to maintain hygiene in shops selling meat.The issue of setting up a slaughterhouse is likely to be discussed in MC meeting, scheduled to be held on Friday. The proposal has been mooted after the Zirakpur MC realised that meat was being sold without verification from veterinarians. Moreover, the animals were being slaughtered in shops leading to mess and the possibility of spread of an infection.

BSNL subscribers a harried lot
Zirakpur, June 17
Inconvenience was caused to a large number of BSNL subscribers of Baltana and surrounding areas, as telephone, broadband and mobile connections have been affected due to cutting of a cable during the digging work of a drain on the Choice road. According to a BSNL official, more than 100 connections of Baltana and surrounding areas had been suffered, as MC workers had started the digging work on the Choice road to lay down the drain line.

Burgeoning Traffic
Roads to be widened
Mohali, June 17
Chairman of the District Planning Board Narinder Sharma said roads of the town would be widened and strengthened to cope with the traffic which had increased over the years. Sharma said Rs 15 crore would be spent on widening and strengthening the road leading from the cremation ground to the PCL chowk. The work would start from July 1.

Balongi-Mohali Road
High-tension lines to go underground
Mohali, June 17
The overhead high tension lines running along the Balongi-Mohali bus stand road will be laid underground to enable widening of the road. According to sources, decision will be taken at the executive committee meeting of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority here today.

MC lacks procedure to supervise task
Chandigarh, June 17
Play equipment removed from the small park at Sector 21, Chandigarh. The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) does not have any proper procedure to supervise the quality of work, which they allot to private contractors in the city.During a surprise visit by nominated councillors, Pallav Mukherjee and MPS Chawla, to the venue of the construction of water tank in Sector 21, it was found that the contractor was not following the proper norms of the construction.

Lawyer, son thrashed

High drama was witnessed at the Sector 22 police station when a well-known city-based human rights lawyer Rajwinder Singh Bains alleged that he along with his son Utsav Bains were allegedly thrashed by cops led by police post in charge sub-inspector JS Bhullar.

Road safety pamphlets distributed
Chandigarh, June 17
As a part of the traffic awareness campaign, 50 NCC cadets today distributed road safety pamphlets in the city. Traffic police officials divided the NCC cadets in five groups and deployed them at five different light points, including Government Press light point, Sectors 22 and 23 light point, Aroma light point, Transport light point and Tribune Chowk.

The department of revenue, Ministry of Finance, has sanctioned Rs 5.97 crore to the department of excise and taxation, Chandigarh administration, as a part of the project under the CT-MMP.

Mangoes ruling the roost in markets
Chandigarh, June 17
The undisputed king of fruits has edged out all its rivals in city households. A random survey of fruit and vegetable markets, including those in Sector 26, 19 and 22, revealed stalls selling mangoes were drawing the biggest crowds.As expected, the grain market in Sector 26 had the largest range of mangoes. Three perennial favourites - Safeda, Dashehri and Kalmi - which poured into the city from places like Warangal, Nagpur, Lucknow and Saharanpur, are available in plenty.

The application forms for Aerocity, a residential project launched by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority, are still in demand.Banks have received as many as 1.88 lakh forms so far and have demanded another 50,000 forms.

Taking first step towards bringing the private college fee on a par with their government counterparts, UT higher education department has asked PU colleges to submit a detailed justification of their fee structure.

Scholarship for students
Panchkula, June 17
The Panchkula Engineering College, Mouli, Barwala, has introduced scholarship schemes for students on the basis of their Class XII marks.Chairman of the college Shrawan Gupta said students securing more than 90 per cent marks would get a scholarship of Rs 25,000, while students with more than 80 per cent marks would be awarded Rs15,000 from the next academic session.

Two unidentified motorcyclists snatched a gold chain of a Bapu Dham Colony (BDC) resident from near Punjab Roadways Workshop here this evening.

Abducted girl rescued, 1 held
Chandigarh, June 17
The police has recovered a minor girl from Colony No. 4, who was allegedly abducted three days back, and arrested a resident of Industrial Area in this regard.The SHO of the Industrial Area police station, Dilsher Singh Chandel, said the police raided a hut following a tip-off and recovered the 14-year-old girl.

Chemist shop owner held
Mohali, June 17
Special cell of the Mohali police has solved a month-old case of a woman doctor, Dr Sangeeta Goel, being threatened to pay ransom through a letter. The person behind the threatening letter has been found to be a chemist shop owner in Kumbhra village where Dr Sangeeta was running a clinic.

2 minor boys held for stealing
