Portugal’s Nani latest injury victim
Johannesburg, June 8
Portuguese winger Nani became the latest big name to drop out of the World Cup on Tuesday, but there was no dampening the enthusiasm of fans pouring in and readying TV sets around the world. "I'm in Africa, I can't believe it. I'm just so sorry we're going to spoil their party on Friday!" said a laughing Victor Fernandez, coming off a long-haul flight with the green flag of Mexico who play hosts South Africa in Friday's opener.

Rooney edges out Ronaldo!
London, June 8
Wayne Rooney England ace striker Wayne Rooney, who has been playing catch up game with his Portuguese rival Cristiano Ronaldo, has closed the gap by edging the Real Madrid ace out of the World Cup Dream Team. Rooney's string of sensational performances this year has seen him start to challenge Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the greatest player on the planet. It's no surprise to see him topping the list as the most popular player in 250,000 pounds World Cup Dream Team, The Sun reports.

Fabio Cannvaro is the symbol of Italy's 2006 World Cup triumph and the rock at the heart of the Azzurri defence. However, his powers faded somewhat after leaving Juventus' much vaunted back line to head to the graveyard of good defending at Real Madrid in 2006 and Italy faltered at Euro 2008 during his time at the Bernabeu.

Euro champs Spain in Group H

Switzerland

Overall record at finals: Played 26, Won 8, Drawn 5, Lost 13.

Best performance: Quarter-finals in 1934, 1938 and 1954.

Most appearances at finals: Kiki Antenen (1950, 1954, 1962) - 8.

Most goals at finals: Josef Hügi (1954) - 6.

World Cup high: Reaching the quarter-finals as host nation in 1954.

World Cup low: Spending 28 years in the international wilderness between the 1966 appearance and qualification for the 1994 tournament under Roy Hodgson.

Qualification: Switzerland topped their qualification group ahead of Greece and Israel, qualifying for their second successive finals. A slip-up in the second game against minnows Luxembourg - losing 2-1 at home - looked to have damaged their chances, but they booked their place on the plane after six wins in the next eight games, including impressive home and away victories against second-placed Greece. The prolific partnership of Alexander Frei (40 goals, 71 appearances) and Blaise N'Kufo was key to qualification success.

Most appearances: Tranquillo Barnetta, Blaise Nkufo (10).

Honduras

Overall record at finals: Played 3, Won 0, Drew 2, Lost 1.

Best performance: The first round of the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Most appearances at finals: Gilberto Yearwood (1982) - 3.

Most goals at finals: Hector Zelaya, Antonio Laing (1982) - 1.

World Cup high: Drawing 1-1 with hosts Spain in the first round of the 1982 World Cup.

World Cup low: Defeat and subsequent elimination against Yugoslavia in the first round in 1982.

Qualification: Honduras fought it out with Costa Rica to the last breath. Honduras had lost their second-to-last game against USA in the Honduran capital, and thus needed to defeat El Salvador in the final match and then hope that Costa Rica failed to earn three points on American soil. Costa Rica had looked poised for victory after Brian Ruiz scored two goals in the first half, but the Ticos crumbled in the second half, and the game played in Washington ended in a draw, which, coupled with a 1-0 win against El Salvador, allowed Honduras to return to the World Cup by virtue of their better goal difference.

Most appearances: Noel Valladares (18).

Top goalscorer: Carlos Pavon (7).

Chile

Overall record at finals: Played 25, Won 7, Drew 6, Lost 12.

Best performance: Third place in 1962 as hosts.

Most appearances at finals: Leonel Sánchez (’62, ’66), Elías Figueroa (’66, ’74, ’82) - 9.

Most goals at finals: Guillermo Subiabre (1930), Leonel Sánchez (1962, 1966), Marcelo Salas (1998) - 4.

World Cup high: Reaching the semi-finals as hosts in 1962.

World Cup low: Being banned from qualification for the 1994 tournament.

Qualification: Argentinean coach Marcelo Bielsa, who coached his own country at the 2002 finals, pulled off a famous victory against Diego Maradona's men as his team made determind progress to South Africa. Chile eventually came second in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, only a point behind Brazil. Famous striker Marcelo Salas retired early on in the campaign, but a group of unheralded players always looked likely to qualify.

Most appearances: Claudio Andres Bravo, Humberto Suazo (18).

Top goalscorer: Humberto Suazo (10).

Spain

Overall record at finals: Played 49, Won 22, Drawn 12, Lost 15.

Best performance: Reaching the final group round in the 1950 tournament, finishing fourth.

Most appearances at finals: Andoni Zubizarreta (1986, 1990, 1994, 1998) - 16.

Most goals at finals: Estanislao Basora (1950), Emilio Butragueno (1986, 1990), Fernando Hierro (1994, 1998, 2002), Fernando Morientes (1998, 2002), Raul (1998, 2002, 2006) - 5.

World Cup high: Emilio 'The Vulture' Butragueno tearing apart a superb Denmark side including Michael Laudrup, Soren Lerby and Preben Elkjaer in the 1986 second round, scoring four goals in a stunning 5-1 demolition of one of Europe's finest teams.

World Cup low: The 2002 campaign ending in acrimony and controversy as a succession of dubious decisions saw them lose on penalties to host nation South Korea in the quarter-finals. Jose Antonio Camacho's men were furious after two apparently good goals were disallowed.

Qualification: Spain enjoyed an impeccable campaign under del Bosque, winning all 10 qualifiers. Relying almost entirely on the squad that triumphed at Euro 2008, particularly top scorer David Villa, Spain were imperious and enjoyed heavy wins over Armenia (4-0), Belgium (5-0) and Bosnia-Herzegovina (5-2).

Most appearances: Iker Casillas, Joan Capdevila, Xavi (9).

Top goalscorer: David Villa (7).

Like many of the more than 300,000 foreign fans expected for the tournament, Fernandez's first purchase was a "vuvuzela", the ubiquitous trumpet blown by locals and variously likened to the noise made by a herd of elephants or swarm of bees. Fans, though, are aghast at an ever-growing injury list which is threatening to rob the tournament of some glamour on the pitch despite the exotic African backdrop. In a huge blow to Portugal's hopes of a first World Cup triumph, Nani was ruled out with a shoulder injury he picked up in training at home before flying to South Africa.

Other crowd-pullers like England's David Beckham, Germany's Michael Ballack and Ghana's Michael Essien pulled out long ago due to injuries. And Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba and the Netherlands' Arjen Robben are fighting not to join them. African Footballer of the Year Drogba needs surgery on a fractured arm, but it is unclear if the striker will then be able to play for Ivory Coast, arguably the continent's best hope but heavily reliant on their talisman.

Dutch winger Robben has hurt a hamstring but is hoping to join team-mates later in the tournament to help a nation that has never won the Cup despite its famously skilful teams. Italian midfielder Andrea Pirlo, Australian winger Harry Kewell, Chilean striker Humberto Suazo, and South Korean forward Lee Dong-guk are others struggling to get fit.

Spain and Brazil are favourites for the world's most widely-watched sporting tournament, which has never produced a winner outside Europe or South America. Millions of Africans, though, are praying one of their six teams here can break that, or at least go further than Cameroon and Senegal's quarter-final showings in 1990 and 2002. Injuries and tough groups, however, mean there is a real risk all the Africans may fall at the first round hurdle. — Reuters

Kaka ready to emerge from the shadows

Johannesburg, June 8
Kaka has become almost a forgotten man in the World Cup, with the spotlight in the run-up to the World Cup centred around Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, Fernando Torres and David Villa. Yet, lurking in the shadows and without the huge weight of expectation, there is every reason to believe that the former World Player of the Year could finally shine on the world's biggest stage.

Kaka suffered from niggling injury problems during a disappointing first season with Real Madrid, but that could easily work in his favour. Having made only 33 appearances for his club, Kaka is likely to be fresher than his rivals, many of whom have played upwards of 50 games this season. He is also freed of the weight of expectation which proved such a burden to Brazil's players four years ago.

As if to prove that he is peaking at the right time, Kaka scored his first international goal in a year in Monday's 5-1 friendly win away to Tanzania in their last match before the tournament in South Africa. He also produced some of his characteristic bursts from midfield, a nightmare for defenders as he picks up speed and runs directly at the centre of the defence.

"It gave me a lot of confidence," he told Brazilian reporters after the game in Dar es Salaam. "I felt really good, although still a little bit inhibited. I just need to let myself go." Coach Dunga said that the 28-year-old had to be held back in training, such was his enthusiasm. "He's improving little by little," said Dunga. "We have to put the brakes on him because sometimes he wants to train morning, noon and night."

Kaka will be playing at his third World Cup. In 2002, he made just one substitute appearance and four years ago, he floundered along with the rest of a disappointing Brazilian team. — Reuters

It's no surprise to see him topping the list as the most popular player in 250,000 pounds World Cup Dream Team, The Sun reports.

Barcelona's new signing David Villa is not too far away. The rest of the top 10 sees a mixture of some of the leading talents in world football along with one or two surprise inclusions. Messi is the fourth most popular player chosen so far but was squeezed out of the top three picks by his Argentine compatriot Martin Demichelis.

Cannavaro returned to Turin in 2009 and will be hoping to recapture his best form as Italy look to defend their world title.

The Naples-born defender emerged as a major talent for his home-town club Napoli in 1992 and was quickly snapped up by Parma, where he made over 200 appearances and won the Coppa Italia and UEFA Cup, before moving to Inter Milan for €23 million in 2002 and then to Juventus two years later. During two seasons in Turin, Cannavaro won two Scudetti, but both were stripped from the club following the caliopoli scandal. Juve were demoted to Serie B and the defender jumped ship to Madrid. Despite the quality of his defending being called into question during his time in Madrid, the 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year still won two La Liga titles (2006-07 and 2007-08) under Fabio Capello and Bernd Schuster.

Strengths: A great reader of the game, with exquisite positional sense.

Weaknesses: At 5'9" Cannavaro can suffer in an aerial battle.

Style: Prefers to use the art of anticipation to make interceptions rather than tackles, but that is not to say he doesn't relish a physical tussle.

Quotes: "Cannavaro has that unmistakable presence as a leader and in my impression, is exactly like that tough and cool-headed defence he shows on the pitch." Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Trivia: Cannavaro was raised in the shadow of the Stadio San Paolo, in the Naples suburb of Fuorigrotta, and was a ballboy during Napoli's glory years.
