Water released in sub-canal
:The farmers of the tail-end villages have removed the mud wall that they had raised to block the flow of water in the Ramsara minor (sub-canal) today near village Waryamkhera.The water has been released in the sub-canal by curtailing share of other villages by the irrigation department.

Office-bearers
: A meeting of the management of local Aggarwal Dharmshala was held under the presidentship of Diwan Gupta here on Thursday and following were elected office-bearers unanimously. Dr Mohinder Singla- president, Anoop Singla- manager, Balraj Singla and Kamal Gupta- vice-presidents, Pankaj Bansal- cashier, Pardeep Singla- general secretary, Narinder Goyal- secretary, Avinash Gupta- storekeeper. Besides, a 16-member executive committee was also formed.

Youth killed in accident
: A 22-year-old son of an employee deployed at the District Public Relations Office in Fatehgarh Sahib was killed in an accident on Wednesday. Dilbar Singh, son of Rajinder Singh, an employee of the DPRO, Fatehgarh Sahib, received injuries while on way to Kurali from Ropar on a bike. He was rushed to the PGI, Chandigarh, in a serious condition where he died.

Summer coaching camp at Khalsa College
:The Lyallpur Khalsa College would hold a summer coaching camp for which it would conduct trials in the disciplines of athletics, hockey, football, volleyball, handball, judo and kho-kho on June 4. During the camp, the entire costs, including food and lodging, would be borne by the college management. The best candidates would be inducted in the college and given admission in the current academic session. The shortlisted players will attend coaching camp beginning from June 7 to 12.

DSP Khakh transferred to Nakodar
: In a significant development, former Phagwara DSP Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh, who was recently first transferred to Phillaur, now has been transferred to Nakodar, while Nakodar DSP Rajinder Singh has been transferred as DSP (R) Jalandhar.

Rallies against increasing crimes
: Activists of the Shiv Sena today held rallies to protest against increasing crime and deteriorating law and order situation in Phagwara, Phillaur, Goraya and Nakodar today. Sena activists burnt effigies of terrorism near the Phagwara bus stand and submitted memorandums to the officials.

Smuggler nabbed
: The Bilga Police has arrested a drug smuggler, identified as Harbans Lal of Bhullar village, and recovered a quintal of poppy husk from his possession.

Workshop: A ten-day workshop on “Role Of Nurses In Disaster Management” is being organised from June 3 to 12 at the National Institute of Nursing Education (NINE), PGI, funded by GOI, DGHS (nursing section), New Delhi. Nurses working at various hospital and educational institutes in North India will attend the workshop.

Dispensary sought
: Residents of Sector 15 have demanded setting up of a government dispensary, as the population in the area has crossed the figure of 20,000. A delegation of the sector residents, led by Citizens Welfare Association president SK Nayar, submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda through local MLA DK Bansal. Nayar said as per the original master plan, the space for dispensary was earmarked at the place opposite the market where the IMA house is situated at present. He said three-fourth piece of the land was still lying vacant.

Jammu
Vehicle catches fire
: A tipper of the Municipal Council (MC), Akhnoor, caught fire accidentally yesterday when it was parked near the MC office. Luckily, no one was injured in the fire, the police said. It further said the tipper (JK-02-L-1254), which was used for dumping the garbage, suddenly caught fire around 3:30 pm and was partially burnt. 

Painting event from today: A week-long painting event is being organised by the Department of Tourism and Patnitop Development at Sanasar in Udhampur district. The event will begin tomorrow under the supervision of noted painter KK Gandhi. About 10 artists from across the country will participate in the event. — TNS
