No sealing till June 30
New Delhi, May 31 The Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee had directed the MCD to begin sealing local shopping centres not paying conversion charges from June 1 itself. However, additional commissioner (engineering) said that sealing could not take place unless people were given enough time to make the payments. "There is no question of sealing the units before June 30 as it is the last date for payment of conversion charges," said additional commissioner R.K. Srivastava. Standing Committee chairman Yogender Chandolia also said that traders wanting to pay conversion charges should be given time to do so. "We would issue notice to them before starting the drive. The system of collecting charges at MCD zones should also be streamlined. "We do not want to put the additional burden of sealing on citizens," Chandolia said. However, MCD officials had said there was confusion about the amount of conversion charge. "We will have to make clear things like the amount to be paid as conversion charge by traders as the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is yet to notify that," they had said. |
Court transfers Sajjan case
New Delhi, May 31 Taking on record the sealed envelope from additional sessions judge V.K. Goyal in which he had specified reasons for transferring the case of missing chargesheet from his court, district judge Bimla Makin transferred the matter to her court. The court pronounced the order saying that it was satisfied with the reasons stated by the ASJ and therefore, had fixed the matter for June 2. It further directed that the envelope must be sealed again stating that the “document shall not be opened under any circumstances except on the order of the high court.” Citing personal reasons, ASJ Goyal had expressed his inability to hear the case and had sent the file to the district judge for transferring it to another court. He was to deliver the order on whether directions could be issued to the police to file the chargesheet. “Due to some personal reasons, I do not want to try and adjudicate this matter. Let the file be placed before learned district judge with a request to transfer it to some other court of competent jurisdiction,” ASJ Goyal had said. But on May 24 the district judge had asked ASJ Goyal to cite reasons for expressing his inability to adjudicate the case and forward his reply in a sealed cover on May 31. On April 21, the prosecution had said before the court that the chargesheet against the former MP was prepared but never brought before a judge. The FIR instead was clubbed with other riot cases in which the trials were already going on, special public prosecutor B.S. Joon had said. Senior counsel H.S. Phoolka, appearing for the riot victims, had said that the chargesheet should be filed before the court concerned and summons be issued against the accused to face trial. Meanwhile, arguments on framing of charges continued in another sessions court against Kumar in another case relating to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. |
DU teachers to boycott admissions
New Delhi, May 31 The teachers alleged that the letters sent to DU colleges by the vice-chancellor Deepak Pental informing them regarding the implementation of semester on under-graduate level were irregular as the decision has not been passed by either Executive Council or Academic Council. "We appeal to the teachers of DU to dissociate themselves from the ongoing admissions and preparation of timetables for the upcoming new term," said Aditya Nayaran Mishra, president, DU Teachers' Union (DUTA). He said in the light of gross violations of the Act of Delhi University, the administration has lost all moral and legal authority to govern this university. The hostility of teachers during the admission process is bound to hit the college admissions in a big way. The admission committees in the colleges comprise only teachers and if they decide to stay away, the burden would be shifted to non-teaching staff. "College teachers are authorized to take admissions and not the administration. If the teachers stay away, the principals of colleges would be in a fix," said Sanjay Chaudhry from the political science department. The admission forms of students are signed by the department heads of colleges after checking the original documents of candidates. The college admissions in DU would start on June 23 after the first cut-off is out on June 22. The university administration would need to put in extra work force if the teachers do not get back to work. |
