Bridgetown (Barbados), May 17
England were outplayed in the first two editions of the Twenty20 World Cup, but this time clinically steamrollered all their opponents in the West Indies, emphatically stating that now they were ready to rule the roost in cricket's shortest format. Paul Collingwood's England enjoyed an unbeaten streak in the 16-day cricket carnival, taking home their maiden ICC cricket title in 35 years, since the inception of the 50-over World Cup in 1975.

They were by far the best team in this championship, perhaps a notch or two above the rest, though Australia did make their presence felt with powerful performances until they were outplayed by their Ashes rivals in the summit-clash. "We believed we could achieve what we set out for. I realise that we are the first English side to win the World Cup. It is good that the monkey is off our back," said an elated Collingwood. Michael Hussey's poetic pyrotechnics (24-ball 60 not out; 6X6, 3X4) against a fighting Pakistan when Australia needed a miracle to win was the single-most decisive innings in the championship, though it was Kevin Pietersen who walked away with the player of the series award for his aggregate of 215 runs. Pietersen was the pivot in four English victories. He put his hands up again when the going got tough in the semifinal against Pakistan with a punishing 31-ball 43 which was laced with five huge sixes. Also, there were remarkable performances from Craig Kieswetter (25, 41, 39 and 63), Mahela Jayawardene (100 and 98 not out) and Suresh Raina (101 and 63), but Hussey's calculated assault in the last five overs of the innings, when Australia desperately needed to make 70, was the one that will me remembered for a long time. It was stuff of legend.

Though Dirk Nannes and Shaun Tait rattled opposition batsmen, more so the Indians, with their pace and bounce, it was Sidebottom and Broad who impressed. They used slower and short ball intelligently, without compromising on line and length to underline that T20 cricket will not always be the domain of the batsmen. — PTI

Yuvi, Zaheer Khan among six to be issued notice

Mumbai, May 17
The Cricket Board will issue show cause notices tomorrow to six players, including senior members Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan, for their alleged involvement in a pub brawl in St Lucia after India's humiliating exit from Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies.

Besides Yuvraj and Zaheer, show cause notice would be served to Ashish Nehra, Rohit Sharma, Piyush Chawla and Ravindra Jadeja, according to BCCI sources here.

The tough stand by the Board came in the wake of tour manager Ranjib's Biswal's report to BCCI President Shashank Manohar and his meeting today with the latter at BCCI headquarters here.

Without naming either the errant players or their number, BCCI Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty said show cause notices would be sent to these players by Board Secretary N Srinivasan tomorrow at the behest of Manohar.

"The manager of Indian team, Ranjib Biswal, today met the Board President. The Board President and Secretary took information from him regarding the West Indies tour and also from the written report (submitted by Biswal earlier)," Shetty said.

"We also conducted an enquiry over the incident in the West Indies that was widely reported in the media. After considering all the information that we have gathered, the President took the decision that the Board Secretary will issue show cause notices to those players tomorrow," he said. — PTI

‘Only fit players for selection’

New Delhi: Players who are not fully fit at the time of team selection will not be considered for future tournaments, according to BCCI sources. "Earlier, half-fit players were picked in the hope that they would recover fully by the time the tournament starts but the Board has learnt from its experience in the last two Twenty20 World Cups and from now onwards, only fully fit players would be considered for selection," a top board source said.

Lack of fitness is being cited as one of the major reasons behind India's dismal show in the recent Twenty20 World Cup where they could not win a single Super Eight stage match. Coach Gary Kirsten was aghast with the poor fitness level of the team and he is learnt to have identified Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan and Rohit Sharma unfit for cricket at any level. Kirsten said at 42, he himself was fitter than some of the players and felt eight cricketers were grossly overweight. Kirsten held a one-on-one meeting with seven senior players before they left the West Indies, asking them to do some soul-searching and utilise the break before next month's Asia Cup.

The BCCI is now under pressure to crack down on unfit players in the wake of the team's disastrous performance in the just-concluded Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies. The matter is being viewed seriously as the team had also fared very poorly in the previous World Cup in England where it also failed to reach the semifinals. — PTI

Germany
captain Michal Ballack has been ruled out of the World Cup after injuring his ankle in Chelsea's FA Cup final win over Portsmouth on Saturday, the German Football Federation (DFB) said on Monday. They said his right ankle would be placed in a cast and he would have to wear a special shoe for two weeks once the cast had been removed.

The DFB said it would be eight weeks before he could resume training. The World Cup starts in South Africa on June 11. Ballack limped off with during the first-half of Chelsea's 1-0 win over Portsmouth after a late tackle by Kevin-Prince Boateng. An early x-ray at the stadium showed he had not broken any bones but the 33-year-old midfielder, who has 98 caps, was still worried as he left the ground. — Reuters

Madrid, May 17
Rafael Nadal claimed a record 18th Masters 1000 title as he defeated rival Roger Federer 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in the pair's first meeting in a year to win the Madrid title Sunday. Nadal trailed 4-2 in the second set tiebreaker, but four unforced errors in a row from Federer left the Swiss hanging.

Nadal converted on the second of three match points - a Federer forehand mis-hit - to also become the first to sweep the Masters 1000 spring clay events. Federer had rallied twice in the second set from a break down, only to give it away in the breaker. "It's been a wonderful event for me," said Federer. "I'm sorry I couldn't defend the title. Rafa's had an incredible clay season, he was supreme today." The Swiss said that despite losing in two hours ten minutes, with 34 winners and 33 unforced errors, "I'm looking forward to Paris, I'm happy with my clay game." "I know I'm not Spanish but I tried to play some clay court tennis here." Nadal will rise back to second in the world in Monday's rankings as he heads to the French Open.

"Winning here at home is a dream," said the first man to sweep all three spring Masters 1000 titles: Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid. He also broke through to set a new record of 18 titles at the Masters 1000 level, one more than Agassi and two ahead of Federer. — DPA
