PEC does a U-turn, reinstates discredited teacher
Chandigarh, May 17
In a rare case, perhaps the first of its kind in the region, an associate professor of PEC University of Technology who was “compulsorily retired” for fudging his travel bills to claim reimbursement has now been reinstated by the varsity’s director on the “advice” of its board of governors. His punishment has now been reduced to ‘reduction to a lower post’.

Board applies law of averages

As many as 104 students of a private school, whose middle exam results were declared by the Punjab School Education Board recently, would never come to know their actual marks in mathematics, the reason being that their answer books had gone missing during the process of being checked.

Disabled employee can’t be deprived of benefits: HC

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled an employee, suffering from disability during service, cannot be deprived of benefits otherwise available to him. Efforts have to be made to adjust him on post carrying equal pay scale, if shifted.

Residents protest official apathy, want action against guilty

Protesters stage a sit-in in front of the Mohali Deputy Commissioner’s office on Monday for delay in action against those responsible for levelling of Shivalik Hills in Chandigarh’s periphery. Irritated over the dilly-dallying of the Mohali district administration in taking action against those who have levelled the eco-fragile Shivalik Hills in Chandigarh’s periphery to carve out roads, residents of the Bhagindi, Gurdha, Kasauli, Jyanti Majri and Karaundewala villages today staged a sit-in and blocked the road in front of the office of the district Deputy Commissioner here today.

Typhoid at Lohgarh village

The outbreak of typhoid in Lohgarh village here has been traced to contaminated sources of drinking water being supplied by the Public Health Department in the area. Two of the five water samples collected from the area had failed the tests.

In-laws, husband booked as woman dies

A married woman of Ambala City died under mysterious circumstances this morning. The father of the deceased, Rajni (28), has alleged that her daughter was poisoned. The police has registered a case under Section 304-B (dowry death) against the husband of the deceased, her father-in-law and mother-in-law.

5 booked for attacking woman

Five persons have been booked for beating up a woman. The victim is a partner in Verma agency, with its office near the Baba Balak Nath temple at Balongi.

Two lawyers suspended

The disciplinary committee of the Bar Council of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh has suspended the licence of two advocates, Chandigarh-based Rohit Mahajan and Rewari-based Hari Om Sharma.

Charges framed against ex-SDO

A local court today framed charges against former SDO (buildings) TP Singh for passing plans which violated building laws. The case will now come up for hearing on October 3.

Scooter stolen

A scooter was reportedly stolen from outside Apni Mandi in Sector 33 on May 2. In his complaint, Vijay Verma, a resident of Sector 23, said someone had stolen his Honda Activa scooter (CH 04 C 1006) from outside Apni Mandi. A case of theft has been registered.

Thieves decamp with jewellery, cash

Robbers struck at a house in Ghaggar Beed village, near Saket, during the wee hours of Sunday and decamped with gold jewellery and other ornaments worth Rs 1 lakh and cash.
