College student commits suicide
Fatehgarh Sahib, April 30 The student, Jatinder Singh (18), a resident of Jajja village in Hoshiarpur, got admitted in the first semester of diploma in mechanical engineering around one and half year ago. Police officials investigating the matter said Jatinder misinformed his parents about his stay in hostel and the year of semester he was studying in. He was also found absent from college and was reportedly fined. College authorities asked him to bring along his parents in view of short lectures. His parents paid a surprise visit to the college yesterday and decided to meet the college principal to enquire about Jatinder’s studies. After learning the truth, they asked him to reach the principal’s office immediately. Panicked Jatinder consumed some poisonous substance before arriving at the principal’s office and vomited there. He was rushed to the local Civil Hospital from where he was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh. He was then brought to another private hospital where he died late last night. Police officials investigating the matter said Jatinder’s father decided to meet his son before leaving for Dubai tomorrow. His parents asked him to hand over a gift to a relative residing nearby the college while they went to meet the college principal. Though the college principal was out of country, officiating principal of the college apprised Jatinder’s parents about his attitude towards studies. The SSP, Fatehgarh Sahib, said inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC had been initiated in this connection. He added that Jatinder’s parents sought permission from the SDM not to get the postmortem conducted. |

Body found hanging from tree
Ambala, April 30 The deceased, identified as Umesh (25), was working as a labourer and left his place for work last morning. He did not return home in the evening. In the morning his parents went looking for him and found his body hanging from a tree. They informed the police. The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital for postmortem examination. Police sources said no injury marks were found and he seemed to have committed suicide. A case has been registered at Mahesh Nagar police station. |
Cop acquitted of rape charge
Chandigarh, April 30 The court acquitted the accused as the counsel for the complainant could not prove the rape charges against the head constable. The delay in lodging an FIR after over nine months of the crime was also noted by the court while pronouncing the order. “It is clear from the defence evidence that the complainant is in the habit to file complaints and withdraw thereafter. She will not even hesitate to level allegations of attempt to rape on her husband Gurdip Singh,” the order noted while dismissing the charges against the police official. The police had registered the case against Anil on the complaint of a woman, a resident of Kishangarh, on January 17, 2007. She claimed that Gurdeep Singh, who had helped her in getting divorce from her husband and promised to marry her, had ditched her. She went to the Mani Majra police station to lodge a complaint against Gurdeep, but the police reportedly did not take any action. The woman had alleged that Anil, who was then posted as munshi at the Mani Majra police station, sexually exploited her on the pretext of giving her a copy of the DDR. |

Saji is in custody of the Anti-Terrorist Squad of the Maharastra Police, which has arrested the top IPS officer for drug trafficking on January 25, 2009. BJP leader assaults woman cop, held
Chandigarh, April 30 The police said, Chaudary had slapped Ram Parkash, a shopkeeper in Maloya, following an altercation as the latter had been insisting him to pay back his dues. Chaudary had bought grocery from the shopkeeper and had allegedly not paid for the same. Today also he had come to the shop and took packets of biscuits and chips, but when asked to pay, he started to quarrel, the shopkeeper alleged. Ram Parkash alleged that his Chaudary also tore his shirt and broke his spectacles. The in charge of the Maloya police post said the police control room (PCR) received the information at 6.20 pm about brawl in Maloya. A police team comprising of a woman constable, a head constable and a driver reached there. Chaudary also attacked the police team. Chaudary pushed the woman constable and in the process, a portion of her shirt was torn. The police has registered a case of causing hurt, obstructing a public servant from discharging her duty and assaulting her, outraging modesty of a woman and criminal intimidation against Chaudary and arrested him. |

17-yr-old held for raping minor
Chandigarh, April 30 The SHO of the Industrial Area Police Station said the 17-yaer-old accused, a resident of Colony No. 4, was arrested today. He had allegedly raped a minor girl of the colony on April 28. He has been sent to the juvenile home after his medical examination. Cheating
Harjinder Singh, a resident of Amritsar, filed a complaint with the police alleging that Dayal Inder Singh Gill and Sukhjinder Singh, both running an office in the name of Milestone Immigration at SCO 64-65, Sector 8, Chandigarh, had taken Rs 7.3 lakh from him on the pretext of sending him to Canada. However, they neither sent him to Canada nor returned his money. The police has arrested the accused and registered a case of cheating and criminal conspiracy against them. In another case, Pawan Kumar, a resident of Sector 7, Panchkula, filed a complaint with the police alleging that Anil Kumar, a resident of Sector 24-C, had taken Rs 90,000 from him for a Tata Indica car (CH-03-H-4976) on January 3, 2008. He later came to know that the accused had sold off the car to another person. A case of cheating and breach of trust has been registered.

Mohammad Iqbal, a resident of Phase II, Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, reported to the police alleging that Vikas and Mohit, both residents of Sector 27, had beaten and assaulted him in Sector 27 yesterday. A case has been registered.
Injured
Dharminder, a resident of Balongi village, reported that an auto-rickshaw hit his scooter near the traffic light point on Sectors 45, 46, 49 and 50 intersection yesterday. He was injured. A case has been registered.
Caught
Mukesh, a resident of Attawa, lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Vinod Sharma, a resident of Kajheri, was caught red-handed while stealing his generator battery from his residence yesterday. A case has been registered.
Gambling
The police has arrested eight persons on charges of indulging in gambling from Kajheri. The police said Yashpal Sharma, Munish Suri, Adesh, Gurmit Singh, Ajay Kumar, Ranjit Singh, Jaspal and Vipin, all city residents, were arrested from Kajheri on Wednesday while indulging in gambling. The police recovered Rs 22,000 from their possession. A case under the Gambling Act has been registered at the Sector-36 police station. |

Mohali, April 30 In the first match held at the Sector 16 cricket stadium, Chandigarh bundled out Ropar for 185 in 45.5 overs. Amrinder Brar, who came one down and was involved in a 53-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Arjun Kumar (21) remained unbeaten till the end. He went on to score 113 off 118 balls, hitting 19 boundaries and a six. He played spin and pace alike in a brilliant display of batsmanship. Amrinder was the only stumbling block between the rampaging Chandigarh bowlers and the Ropar batting lineup. For Chandigarh, Amit Uniyal (3 for 42), Bipul Sharma (3 for 33) and Karanveer (2 for 31) were the main wicket-takers. Chandigarh in their second innings scored 168 for one in 24.1 overs. Amit Prashar and Simrat Bawa added 168 runs for the opening partnership before Simrat was caught by Amrinder of Arjun for 37. Amit, who had hit a century in the first innings, remained unbeaten on 127 off 94 balls. His aggressive knock was studded with 18 fours and four sixes. He became the first batsman to score a century in each innings. In the second match played here, Ludhiana carved out and upset win over Mohali. Resuming at 73 without loss, Mohali recorded an opening partnership of 115 between Sunny Sohal and Ankit Pursharthy before Pursharthy was caught by Deepak Bansal off the bowling of Karan Goel for 30. Sunny Sohal departed with his team’s total at 152 and his individual score of 96 when he stepped out to drive left-arm spinner Ankur Kakkar and was smartly stumped by Gitansh Khera to miss his coveted century by four runs. Amritsar at one stage were 217 for 8 but medium-pacer Tarun Sharma coming in at No. 10 went after the Jalandhar bowlers hammer and tongs, scoring a blistering century (103 off 94 balls) studded with 10 boundaries and six towering sixes before he was caught by Mandeep off the bowling of Ishan Malhotra. Day boarding scheme for sportsmen at PU
Chandigarh, April 30 Under the scheme, selected sportspersons in seven disciplines — badminton, basketball, football, hockey, swimming, wrestling and athletics — will not only be given qualitative training and other required facilities but also stipend and other incentives. Dr CS Grewal, director, PU sports, said as many as 20 sportspersons between the age group of 14 and 21 would be selected after trials in each discipline. “Each player will be given Rs 6,000 as stipend in a year apart from Rs 2,000 per trainee per year for competition exposure under the scheme. The sportspersons would also get sports kit worth Rs 4,000 whereas Rs 150 would be spent on providing insurance coverage to all trainees,” said Grewal. The university will get Rs 1 lakh as financial support for the maintenance of infrastructure in the selected discipline annually. The selection trials will be held from May 5 to 7 at the grounds of the university and all interested players are required to bring their sports certificates. |
Junior golf camp at British School
Chandigarh, April 30 Manjit, who also heads the academy, said the purpose of the academy was to make golf affordable and accessible to children of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. The academy, which was inaugurated by Chandigarh Golf Club president Birinder Singh Gill on February 5, is endorsed and supported by the club and the Indo-Canadian Golf Association, Canada, under their junior golf development programme. The young trainees have been provided with all necessary equipment, including golf sets, golf balls, caddies, etc. free of cost. The participants are being taught the basic fundamentals of the game, including putting, chipping, short and long irons. The academy has a five-hole miniature golf course where children are taught course management, golf etiquette and basic rules. The academy will continue to organise different golf camps in the near future. |
Double delight for Saupin’s Param
Mohali, April 30 Param played a controlled game against Karandeep of Punjab in boys under-12 final and gave no chance to Karandeep in the first set, which lasted less then 30 minutes, and clinched it 6-0. Karandeep, known for comebacks, bounced back to take the second set 6-4. The third set saw long rallies as both players toiled to win every point. Till 2-2, they both held their serve but Param hit good down the line passing shots to take the fifth game and the lead in the decider and maintained the lead till the end to take the game, set, match and the boys’ under-12 title. Param paired with Shrey Gupta of Haryana to clinch his dual title, beating Nihit Rawal and Raghav Talwar of Chandigarh in boys’ under-14 doubles 6-3, 6-3 in the final. The girls’ under-12 title went to Soumya Sexsena of Chandigarh, who defeated Nimret Walia also of Chandigarh 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Both played well from the baseline to play a marathon match. Soumya showed her strength in the final set to take the final set 6-4. Gayatri Kumaraiah of Gujarat showed her class to beat Pooja Morya of Punjab in three hard-fought sets 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (17-15), which lasted three hours and went into Gayatri’s kitty. This was the longest match of the tournament. The match went to a tie-break, which could have gone either way, but fourth seed Gayatri was lucky enough to topple the top seed for the title. The boys’ under-14 event couldn’t be completed because of bad light. Tegbir Singh Hara, student of Sacred Heart Convent School, Ludhiana, played a keenly-contested match against Dheeanush Bhatti of Chandigarh, as they were tied 6-6 in the deciding set before the play had to be suspended. ONGC I-League
Chandigarh, April 30 According to a communication received here from Sunando Dhar, CEO of the ONGC I-League, Rakesh Bakshi has been directed to report one day before the matches begin. The matches to be played in Goa, are MPCB vs SAL (May 2), SCG vs MU (May 4), DEM vs AI (May 5), SAL vs MFC (May 6) and MPCB vs MMB (May 7), he added. Bakshi had also accompanied the Indian senior team to the South Asian Federation Games in Islamabad and the Indian sub-junior squad in Tehran. He is also a member of the AIFF Disciplinary Committee. Goculdas Nagvencar of Goa has been appointed referees’ inspector/match commissioner for the match to be played between PFC and JCT in Pune on May 3. City pugilists win medals
Chandigarh, April 30 Giving details, Dr CK Jerath, honorary secretary, Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association, who acted as chairman, jury of appeal, in the tournament, said Karamveer Singh won a silver in the 60 kg category, while Inderjeet Singh (64 kg), Gagan Preet Sharma (75 kg), and Vinod (+91 kg) won bronze medals. He said a total of 83 top pugilists from nine states of national ranking participated in the tournament. Services won the overall championship with 45 points while Railways lifted the runners-up trophy with 35 points, he added. |

Chandigarh, April 30 Verma managed to fetch a total of 599 votes in the elections but his result was withheld on the complaint of some members that he had thrown a lavish party at the Chandigarh club on April 23 thus violating the code of conduct. Club president BS Gill said the standing committee of the club, in their meeting held today, took the decision in Verma’s favour. Verma was among the 22 candidates who had vied for as many as 11 seats for members of the governing council, he added. |

Chandigarh, April 30 Dr JPS Sidhu, joint director, UT sports department, said sportspersons seeking sports gradation certificate must submit their forms with the department before May 4. The sports gradation certificates will be issued to the eligible sportspersons in aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing (men), canoeing, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, table tennis, tae kwon do, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling (men) and cricket. Earlier this month, 200 sportspersons were issued the gradation certificates. |
Anmol, Dhruv get wild card
Chandigarh, April 30 The other players who have got the wild card entry are: u-12 category: Karandeep Singh, Paramveer Bajwa and Siddharth Banet; u-16 category: Adhhayan, Srijan Uppan and Pranav Suri. Gajendra Singh, chief operating officer, CLTA, said around 90 players had signed up for the under-16 and under-12 boys and girls qualifying event. He said there were less entries in the girls’ event this time and added that all girls would appear in the main draw. |
