Politics over Industrial Package
BJP corners Satpal Maharaj

Haridwar, April 25
It seems there seems to be a verbal duel and clash of opinions between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the industrial package issue. While at a higher level there is a duel going on between Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and all five parliamentarians from Uttarakhand, now the fight has reached up to party workers.

BJP district workers have strongly come out against the former state Union Railway Minister and currently Member of Parliament from the Pauri Garhwal constituency Satpal Maharaj over his statement on the industrial package extension to the state.

The district unit has strongly condemned the statement of Maharaj wherein he stated that Nishank had not put up the extension of industrial package issue with the Central government. Against this, the district unit has started a series of agitations to bring out the truth in front of the common public.

Lashing at Garhwal MP district head of the BJP Om Prakash Jamdagni termed the remarks of Maharaj as insensible and way out of truth and facts. “This is ridiculous that despite CM Nishank meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh several times this year only, a representative in Parliament from the same home state doesn’t know about it or is trying to play political games,” said Jamdagni.

He further added that instead of ushering support to the CM and the state government in making sure that the Central government gave extension of the industrial package, state Congress leaders were trying to spread wrong information about the efforts put in by the state government in this regard.

Women unit district chief Sanjana Sharma termed the efforts of Congress parliamentarians and leaders towards the extension of the industrial package as hostile and anti-state. She said while on the one side Congress parliamentarians had assured of full cooperation to the Chief Minister on the industrial package, yet they not only avoided accompanying the state delegation, but now were giving out contradictory statements.

“The Congress is harping away from developmental works in this hill state and whether it be not giving extension to the industrial package or on its own stopping the twin hydro-electrical projects in Uttarkashi, both state the real and hidden face of the party. Now unemployment and shifting by companies to other states will only put brakes to the development of Uttarakhand,” remarked Sanjana.

The district unit has decided to move to the streets and apprise people of the efforts and developmental works being carried by the BJP state government since it came to power under former Chief Minister Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri and now under Dr Nishank’s able leadership. Besides staging dharnas, effigy burning and party grassroot workers apprising people of the unsupportive stance of the Congress party are the ways by which the district unit will be carrying out their agitational movement.

Chufal leads dharna in Doon

Dehradun (TNS): Resenting the Central government’s non-extension of the special industrial package for Uttarakhand, state BJP members, led by their president Bishan Singh Chufal, staged a dharna at the Gandhi Park, Dehradun, today.

Addressing the gathering, Chufal refuted the Congress charge that the state government had not enough to pursue the industrial package case with the Centre. He reminded the Congress that the Uttarakhand Assembly in its budget session had unanimously passed a resolution seeking extension of the special industrial package for the state uptill 2020.

He also pointed out that Uttarakhand Chief Minister Dr Nishank had met the Prime Minister, along with Congress MPs, for the extension of the special industrial package. He alleged that the state might find itself in problem if the package was not extended beyond 2010.

Chufal held that even the quota of foodgrains meant for Uttarakhand had been reduced by the Centre. “The Congress at the Centre has been deliberately resorting to anti-Uttarakhand policies,” state BJP president said.

BJP Mahanagar president Puneet Mittal and other BJP workers attended the dharna.

Gurdas Dua

Rajendra Prasad

Tirtha Das Gupta

Dehradun, April 25
His elusive search for a “guru” who could teach him the finer points of photography when young, brings him to workshops and seminars sharing experiences accrued whilst delivering a formidable body of work in the past 25 years.

A self-taught advertising and industrial photographer, Indore-based Gurdas Dua had students both young and old listening to him with all attention as he discussed fashion photography at the workshop, “The Iris: Visualising the art of photography”, that concluded at Doon University here today.

“It is an unfinished agenda of my life and an issue close to my heart. I try to do as much as I can to teach those desirous of learning photography. What I missed in my younger days was a teacher who was willing to teach. None of the universities or institutions to this day run full-fledged courses, at the most these courses are mere add-ons supporting main courses in mass communication and journalism. Even camera companies do not have full-fledged institutions,” he said, while speaking with The Tribune today.

It was a hobby that he picked up in Agra in the ’80s watching tourists and professional cameramen taking photographs of the Taj Mahal. His expensive hobby was a drain on his family. “In fact, my father used to remark that the expensive hobby would one day make them paupers. My first camera was Minolta SRT 101 that I bought for Rs 5,000, which back then it was a princely amount,” said Dua.

Luckily for him an offer by the Department of Atomic Energy to click the photograph of copper vapour laser beam launched him into a career of which he had only dreamt. “The brief spell of six years helped me stand on my feet and make a mark, my contacts kept improving,” he added.

A rarity in the field of photography, Dua depends on word of mouth for work. To this day he does not advertise and believes that his work should speak for itself. Constantly on the look out for newer subjects, he never misses an opportunity to learn himself.

A one-man army and a perfectionist, Dua does not use helpers to carry his equipment or accessories.

“A soldier goes armed to the teeth to the battlefront, so should a photographer carries all his equipment while attending an assignment.

I find it appalling to see photographers surrounded by a battery of helpers, it is of no use. Similarly, photographers should not confuse good photography with costly cameras, even ordinary one’s can give good results depending on the patience of the photographer,” asserted Dua.

A purists to the core and ill-ease at the way photo shop is being used to hide flaws present in a person’s face. He says: “Every face has a defect, the photographer like an artist covers the flaws while magnifying the appeal of the face. A perfect face is egg-shaped with both the three portions from forehead to chin in perfect symmetry and equal. To make round face attractive certain posturing, masking through appropriate hairstyle and use of make-up such conventional methods are far better than using photo shop tools that may often lie about a face.”

Selection of time the key, says Rajendra Prasad

Digital cameras may be proving a boon to photographers, but for nature photography selection of time continues to be of utmost import says and best results can only be achieved, if this aspect in mind says Rajendra Prasad, a digital expert, who routinely figures in Smart Photography Magazine.

Speaking with The Tribune he said unless time factor was kept in find, good results could not be achieved while taking nature photographs. “Early morning and late evening are the golden hours, one requires oodles of patience to visualise a concept and then capture it in the camera. Sun at a particular degree during these hours it lends shade and depth to the object,” said Prasad.

A resident of Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Prasad picked up the camera as a hobby and began with Yashica 120 camera and now he captures the best moments of the nature with Canon 350 D camera.

Marvelling at the digital technology that has made photography dark room and chemical use redundant, Rajendra believes that it has once for ended the multiple exposure scene. Earlier, photographers had to resort to 18 or more multiple exposures to achieve an image that would be then be mixed. Now similar results can be achieved through digital enhancement,” said Prasad.

However, adding a cautious note, he said despite the advances made in technology a photographer should have some knowledge all aspects of the photography.

“Notwithstanding shortcomings in analogue mode, it helped photographers learn the basics, one should have complete knowledge of the past and the present,” he added, who is also Chairman of Digital Imaging Division IIPC and associate of The Royal Photographic Society and also has a book titled A to Z about digital photography.

Kindling interest among amateurs

Interested in the principles governing photography, a nightmare for many a novice photographer, Tirtha Das Gupta loves simplifying them for his pupils.

Employed with the Indian Agriculture Research Institute, New Delhi, Gupta is also honorary course director of Foto-Technik, a Delhi-based institution.

“Teaching photography interests me most, I am actively engaged in kindling interest among amateur photographers. I also dabble in pictorial photography as my hobby,” said Gupta while speaking with The Tribune.

A regular contributor to the “Lets Go”, a travel magazine, Gupta picked up photography when he was in Kolkata.

During the workshop Gupta gave demonstrations on basic principles of photography. Table top photography and use of light that is based on scientific principles.

The workshop organised by Uttarakhand Gramin Bank and Doon University concluded today.

Plan to promote mountain cow
Rajeev Khanna
Tribune News Service

Nainital, April 25
Uttarakhand Cooperative Dairy Federation Limited has initiated an ambitious plan to promote the mountain cow. The federation has started a pilot project in Almora aimed at marketing the ghee made purely from the milk of the mountain cow, which is better known as pahari cow.

The Chairman of the federation, Dr Mohan Bisht, talking to The Tribune, said: “We are successfully selling the ghee at double the rate of any other ghee available in the market. The customers are happy to purchase the ghee made from the milk of this cow at a rate of Rs 500 per kg while all other varieties of ghee available in the market are priced close to Rs 250 per kg”.

The strategy adopted by the federation for marketing this product is unique. The federation is trying to convince the ghee consumers across the country that this ghee is much more nutritious than any other ghee available. The logic given is that since the mountain cow moves in mountains known for their bounty of herbs, a lot many herbs are consumed by this cow as its fodder. “It is quite obvious that the qualities of those herbs become an integral part of the milk and the ghee prepared from this milk is much better than the cows and buffaloes consuming the normal cattle feed,” explained Bisht.

Generally farmers prefer to keep other breeds of cow as they are known to give more quantity of milk. But, the federation is going all out to promote the mountain cow for its “rare qualities”. The milk of this cow is being collected separately and the farmers bringing this milk are being paid Rs 5 extra for every litre they supply to the federation. Bisht said a local non governmental organisation (NGO), Grassroots, has been associated with this exercise.

The federation is right now looking for bigger partners to market this product at the national level. At present, the ghee is being sold in packs of 150 grams and 300 grams. “Talks are on with several institutions in marketing the product outside the state. We are also in touch with Patanjali Yogapeeth of Baba Ramdev for this endeavour,” he said.

Bisht said state Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was very keen on promoting this product and he had made it clear at the annual general meeting of the dairy federations of the state that the idea needed to be taken forward.

Based on the success of a pilot in Almora and Ranikhet, the government wants to replicate the initiative in areas like Champawat, Pitthoragarh, Okhalkanda, Betalghat and Ramgarh.

The federation claims that the ghee did brisk business during this Kumbh in Haridwar where it was sold at various stalls put up by it.

Haridwar, April 25
Dev Sanskriti University, apart from the world renowned Patanjali Yog Peeth, is fast turning into another yoga hub in Haridwar, where people from across the country and abroad are coming to learn the healthy art of yoga.

In this context a delegation of teachers from Jharkhand today completed their one-month training module at Dev Sanskriti University.

Now fully geared up, these teachers will spread the knowledge of yoga throughout the interiors of Jharkhand.

These teachers, apart from yoga training, were also given lectures on moral education, discipline and Indian values.

Chancellor Dr SP Mishra, while addressing the final session of the training module, said, “To be a teacher is in itself an honour and it is a golden moment of your life when you (trainee teachers) are ready for the noble job”.

Dr Mishra also shed light on the university’s history, objectives and inculcating Indian cultural values in the lives of people. “The university’s motive has never been accumulating wealth, but to spread Indian values and ethics among common people making their lives better,” said the Chancellor.

Chief in charge of the yoga wing Dr Suresh Varnwal, who played a pivotal role in the training programme and module, said learning was a gradual process which always made one better and hoped that the teachers were now feeling much more transformed mentally and physically.

The trainee teachers were also quite excited and ready to spread knowledge of yoga.

Speaking to The Tribune one of the teachers Om Prakash Bharatiya hailing from Gadwa district termed spreading knowledge equivalent to any social service and felt that the university stood tall among other universities due to its focus and objectives.

Similarly, Naresh Prasad Singh from Chatra district of Jharkhand attributed the best of yoga education to the natural and spiritual environment of the university too. Usha Singh said the environment of the university paved for a positive change in one’s personality and was specially commendable as thousands of morally educated students passed out from the university every year.

While most of the teachers said apart from yoga training, they felt blessed to be here in the time of the Kumbh.

The teachers also met Shanti Kunj head Dr Pranav Pandya and Shail Jeeji and sought blessing from them.

Nainital Diary
Residents to remember witty former Commissioner Raju
Rajeev Khanna
Tribune News Service

Nainital, April 25
Besides his being a good administrator, outgoing Kumaon Commissioner S Raju will also be remembered for his sharp wit and sense of humour. Raju surely knew how to put his point across in a lighter vein.

Even in serious matters he drove home the point by narrating incidents and jokes that had a deeper meaning with reference to the context in which he was talking.

After it was announced that he was on way to Dehradun, local journalists called him up to get a quote on his tenure in Nainital.

They got a brief reply as he said, “The tenure was satisfactory. I had come with the impression that I was to play a T-20 match here, but it eventually turned out to be a Test match”.

It is reliably learnt that when a person out to get some publicity for himself was cribbing before Raju during a recent meeting on how a number of letters written by him to the Commissioner had gone unanswered, Raju very calmly told him that there were lakhs of people residing in Kumaon division and if he was to reply to every letter he received, it would surely take a very long time.

Raju was seen in his elements at a book release function in November last year when while drawing similes and using appropriate metaphors, he had very candidly and in a straightforward manner related what ailed the system in India. His tongue-in-cheek comments had not only drawn peals of laughter from those present, but also evoked serious thought as to what needed to be done to put things right. Raju had pointed out, “The perception that has gone down is that if I am a Commissioner, it has got something to do with the commission and since the persons under me are Collectors, they are somehow related to the collection”.

Another important joke he often narrated about the system in India was that once a wise man tried to tell a clerk lazing around at his desk to work hard. The clerk asked him what would happen if he seriously got down to working hard. The wise man told him that he would rise in stature and earn a lot of money by the time he retired. And what would happen then? the clerk still asked. The wise man told him, “Then you can relax and laze around”. The answer that the clerk gave him was: “So what am I doing now? If this is what I will be doing after I put in years of effort, what is the point?”

Besides his sense of humour, Raju will be remembered as a person who worked towards keeping the beauty of the region intact and an officer who prevented the builder lobby from spreading its tentacles in the Kumaon belt.

Snow leopard Rani dies

Nainital suffered a huge loss last week. It lost a precious possession in the form of Rani, the only snow leopard that was surviving in its zoo till then. The zoo had earlier lost Rani’s sibling Dev a couple of years back. Rani was found dead in her enclosure on Tuesday.

The caretakers at the zoo said she was alright till the previous night. It was being assumed that she died because of old age. Since it is not easy to find a replacement for a snow leopard, it has been decided to use art of taxidermy and keep her body after getting it stuffed. In terms of high-altitude animals of the cat family, the zoo now only retains the Siberian tiger Kunal.

Residents flay CM’s Nobel claim

The suggestion by Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank that India be given a Nobel Prize for organising an event like the Kumbh has not been received positively by people. They are seeing it as another one of his moves to get publicity for himself.

“How can he seek the award for an event that does not come under any category of Nobel Prizes? Secondly a Nobel Prize is not a Planning Commission grant that can be demanded by going to Delhi. Above all, with what face can he seek an award when people die in a stampede and questions are being asked about the ones said to be missing?” question several residents of Nainital while discussing politics in their small talk at tea stalls.

Power, water crises continue

As the power and water crises continues unabated, the number of public protests also continue to grow. The protests are generally in the form of effigy burning, raising of slogans, public meetings and of late, locking up of the Power Department or Jal Sansthan offices.

But recently the Youth Congress activists in Haldwani came up with a novel way to air their resentment against the functioning of the Jal Sansthan. An agitated mob stormed into the office of the Executive Engineer of the sansthan and handed over bottles of mineral water to him. The agitators said employees of the office were not performing their duties sincerely and the supply of water whether through taps or through tankers was extremely erratic.

State’s lone representative at Lankan contest
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 25
Prem Kumar, president of the Uttarakhand Paralympic Association, is all geared up to knock down his competitors at an international sports meet in Sri Lanka. Prem is the lone representative from Uttarakhand that has been selected for the Sri Lankan Open 2010 Badminton Championship to be held in Colombo.

Delighted at the opportunity, Prem said: “I have been selected by the Badminton Sports Association of India for Challenged to play in the paralympic games for class I men’s singles and doubles championship. I went through a strenuous series of selection criteria that has paid me now. The association is funding my tour by bearing the travelling expenses. The ONGC is also sponsoring my sports kit for this tournament.”

While talking to The Tribune, Prem said the paralympic games had great scope of marking state’s presence at the international level but the state government had done a little for the promotion of these talented people. The state had promising sports persons that are strongly emerging at national and international games organised for the physically challenged, but the game lacked support of the state government. Other states are fully promoting district or state competitions for the physically challenged. The sports persons in the state were also facing difficulty in finding sponsors for them.

It was last year in the month of November that Prem won the first bronze medal in swimming at the 9th National Paralympic Swimming Competition held at Karnal, Haryana. He has also represented India in the 18th Common Wealth Games Swimming, 7th Israel Open-Badminton, 2nd Isra Open Badminton Championship, 32nd National Games held in Hyderabad and many more.

He said other states like Haryana every year provided Bhim Awards and a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh along with job to physically challenged sports persons. Similarly, Karnataka provides Eklavya Award and Maharashtra awards Chhatrapati Shivaji Award on the National Sports Day. The Uttarakhand government should also honour players.
