Mumbai, April 25 Chennai though had to spend some anxious moments towards the close of Mumbai run chase with big-hitting Kieron Pollard threatening to almost singlehandedly win the match before he was out in the penultimate over for a 10-ball 27 which was studded with three fours and two sixes. For Chennai, who have been playing in their second final after finishing runners-up to Rajasthan Royals in 2008, it has been a roller coaster ride having made it to the semifinal in their last league match. Mumbai, who were playing in an IPL final for the first time, were the most consistent side in the tournament having won 10 of their 14 league matches, but they faltered at the final hurdle. For Mumbai, captain Sachin Tendulkar, who declared himself fit for the grand finale after sustaining a right hand webbing split in first semifinal, top-scored with a 45-ball 48 which was studded with seven fours but he did not get enough support from his batting colleagues. Tendulkar's 66-run stand from 58 balls for the second wicket with Abhishek Nayar was the only substantial partnership for Mumbai. Left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati emerged the most successful Chennai bowler with two for 26 while Doug Bollinger, Albie Morkel, Muttiah Muralitharan and Suresh Raina took a wicket apiece. Mumbai began their run chase of 169 on a shaky note with opener Shikhar Dhawan failing to score the opening over from Ravichandran Ashwin and was out in the second over bowled by Bollinger for an eight-ball duck. Mumbai struggled for runs before Tendulkar and Nayar took 10 runs from the fifth over by hitting a four each off Ashwin. Tendulkar, who celebrated his 37th birthday yesterday, then smote Albie Morkel for two fours to take Mumbai to 33 for one after the first power-play. With off-spinner Muralitharan introduced in the seventh over, runs came in trickles and he was unlucky not to have got Nayar with Matthew Hayden dropping the batsman when on eight. — PTI Scoreboard Chennai Super Kings: Vijay c Tiwary b Fernando 26 (19) Hayden c Rayudu b Pollard 17 (31) Raina not out 57 (35) Badri c Malinga b Fernando 14 (11) Dhoni c Fernando b Zaheer 22 (15) A Morkel run out 15 (6) Anirudha not out 6 (3) Extras (lb 3, w 8) 11 Total (5 wickets; 20 overs) 168 Bowling: Harbhajan 4-0-30-0, Malinga 4-0-33-0, Zaheer 4-0-34-1, Fernando 4-0-23-2, Pollard 4-0-45-1. ‘Reserved our worst for the last’
Mumbai, April 25 Gilchrist said the day totally belonged to their Bangalore rivals whom they had beaten in the summit clash of 2009 IPL in South Africa. "We were outplayed. We should have batted out our overs. Unfortunately we reserved our worst for the last match," he said. Gilchrist said he spoke to the players after the match and told the youngsters they had a lot to look forward ahead in their cricket career. "I spoke to my players after the match. They need to forget this performance. A lot of cricket is left in their careers. I have enjoyed the first segment of the IPL. I am carrying a lot of wonderful memories. I want to be back next year," the former Australian wicket-keeper batsman said. Asked about the swirling scandal surrounding IPL and the damage that's happening to the league off the playing area, Gilchrist said he was not sure what would come out of the washing and tidying process that was on. "There are a lot of speculations there. It does not look good at the moment," were his telling remarks. About IPL 4 and the process of fresh auctions, Gilchrist said, "I suppose those are the last things on the administrators' mind at the moment." Happy to finish on a high note: Kumble
Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Anil Kumble expressed his happiness for having finished the IPL engagement with a thumping nine-wicket victory over Deccan Chargers in the third place play-off match "It's always good to go out on a happy note and it has given a great opportunity to feature again in the Champions League Twenty20 in September in South Africa. Our game today was exceptional," said the former India captain. Kumble, however, rued the fact that the Bangalore outfit had failed to reach tomorrow's final and said his talented team was inconsistent through the tournament, especially against Mumbai Indians in the semifinals on April 22. "We played pretty inconsistently in the tournament. We had quality and experience in the line up but did not do consistently well. Today we showed we are a good side. "Had we played consistently over 40 overs the other day I would not be addressing you today but tomorrow," said Kumble. The highest Indian Test wicket-taker said that the team had some good individual performances to speak of. "But we were not as consistent as we should have been. It was nice to go out with a victory but not making the final will remain a disappointment," he reiterated. Kumble conceded it was difficult to get motivated for the tie after the semi-final loss despite the fact that the Champions League Twenty20 spot was at stake. The leg spin ace said the wicket was a difficult one to bat on and it was probably a good toss to lose today. "The wicket was a bit sticky and not dry with the ball not coming on. And we bowled in the right areas to get the wickets. We got the wickets of the big three – Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds and Rohit (Sharma) cheaply and could put pressure on the rest," he said. "We bowled them out for 80-odd and could chase it well. Probably in that sense it was a good toss to lose," Kumble said. —

Dull draw ends Arsenal’s chances
London, April 25 Captain Ryan Giggs slotted home two penalties at Old Trafford to pile the pressure on Chelsea, who have three games left, but United may have to play their last two matches without striker Wayne Rooney, who was sidelined with a groin injury. United, who close out the season with games at Sunderland and home to Stoke City, are chasing an unprecedented fourth successive championship. They have 79 points while Chelsea, who must also play Liverpool and Wigan Athletic, are on 77 with Arsenal cut adrift on 72. "I think we played well... the most important thing was we kept our nerve," said smiling United manager Alex Ferguson after what was on paper their toughest remaining fixture against fourth-placed Spurs. "There were no signs of nerves whatsoever throughout the game, it was great to see that at this vital time of the season," he added. "We beat the in-form team of the week today, that says a lot for us." Ferguson also told Sky Sports television that Rooney was likely to be out for two to three weeks. — Reuters |
