Kings win in Daredevils’ lair
New Delhi, April 11 Daredevils have earned 12 points from 11 matches, and with three more matches in hand, they still have time to make up for the lost points, provided they win at least two of the next three. With the ball keeping low, stroke-making was very difficult, and the Punjab bowlers did a fine job with their penetrative and restrictive bowling to have the Daredevils batsmen in knots. The home team’s fate seemed to have been sealed when Virender Sehwag holed out Irafan Pathan’s first ball in the second over into the safe hands of Sodhi at cover with just four runs on the board. Though captain Gambhir launched into a short batting blitzkrieg, hitting Irfan for three fours, two of them off successive balls, and two consecutive fours off Love Ablish, he was run out by Theron for a 12-ball 26. Irfan and Piyush Chawla took wickets in turn, while Theron, Yuvraj and Ablish also contributed their own share to break the back of the Daredevils batting, barring the resistance put up by wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik and Mithun Manhas (26, 28b). Their efforts, however, proved too little, too late as the Delhi target was easy meat for Kings XI, though the visitors batted cautiously. Mahela Jayawardene showed the way with a patient 38 off 47 balls with four boundaries and one six and after his exit, captain Kumar Sangakkara and Yuvraj Singh ensured that the victory target did not slip out of hand. Jayawardene was given able company by Irfan to post 41 runs for the opening wicket and later, the Sangakkara-Yuvraj partnership turned out to be the clincher. That stroke-making was such a difficult task was borne out of the fact that in the entire match, only 19 fours and two sixes were struck. Dardevils accounted for eight of the boundaries while the sixes were struck by Jayawardane and Yuvraj. Jayawardene slammed leg-spinner Amit Mishra for a boundary and six to long off from consecutive balls to ease the scoring. In six matches at the Kotla ground, Kings XI were the only team to chase and beat Daredevils, which was a feat in itself. Scoreboard

Mumbai enter premier league
Jaipur, April 11 Kieron Pollard had Yusuf Pathan caught by Harbhajan Singh at short third man to reduce Rajasthan Royals to 85/6. Rajasthan Royals slid further when Abhishek Jhunjhunwala was run out to leave the side at 62/5 in pursuit of 175. Earlier, captain Sachin Tendulkar struck an unbeaten 59-ball 89, his highest Indian Premier League score, to help Mumbai Indians post a competitive 174 for five. Tendulkar mixed caution with aggression and decorated his innings with 10 fours and two sixes to notch up his fifth half century of the tournament. Yet again the Mumbai innings revolved around Tendulkar as he first shared crucial 63 runs for the fourth wicket with JP Duminy (31 off 32) and then added 50 runs with Kieron Pollard (25 off 13) to guide the table toppers to the challenging score especially after they were 30 for three at one stage. Shane Watson was the pick of the Rajasthan bowlers with figures of three for 37. Opting to field, Watson came up with double strike for Rajasthan -- Sanath Jayasuriya and Ambati Rayudu -- in the innings second and his first over of the day. Jayasuriya had a nightmarish return to the Mumbai Indians side as the veteran Sri Lankan lasted only two balls, spooning a Watson delivery down to Jhunjhunwala. — PTI Scoreboard Jayasuriya c J’wala b Watson 1 (2) Tendulkar not out 89 (59) Rayudu c Ojha b Watson 0 (3) Tiwary c Dole b Watson 15 (9) Duminy c Lumb b Trivedi 31 (32) Pollard b Dole 25 (13) Sathish not out 1 (2) Extras (lb 4, w 8) 12 Total (5 wickets; 20 overs) 174 Fall of wickets: 1-12, 2-12, 3-30, 4-93, 5-143. Jaipur may go off IPL map next season
Jaipur, April 11 The Rajasthan Royals owners are reportedly peeved about regular showdowns with different state authorities during run up to IPL matches. Firstly, it was the state government that robbed the IPL matches here of fun and entertainment by imposing a ban on liquor and “no obscenity” by cheerleaders. The Rajasthan High Court’s decision to ban music and fireworks after 10 pm has also added to their woes. The ban on liquor and music didn’t affect the Royals’ first match in Jaipur on April 7 as it was a day match. With so many issues coming into play, the cup of woes has been brimming for the Royals. However, if it wasn’t enough, the Rajasthan State Sports Council (RSSC) forced the Royals to shift their office from the SMS Stadium to the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) Academy. The move came after the RSSC locked the doors of the Royals’ temporary office following a dispute between the home team management and the council over the Royals’ private security guards who had allegedly restricted the movement of the RSSC staff in the west block. The dramatic scenes at the stadium on Friday had hogged the limelight more than the match's preparations and even the organizers of the match, IMG, shifted their office from west block of the stadium to Hotel Rajputana Sheraton yesterday. |

India-Pak dream final today
Ludhiana, April 11 Both the teams are equipped with established raiders and stoppers. The Indian team is banking heavily on the skipper, stopper Mangat Singh aka Mangi Bagga and his ace deputy, raider Hardavinder Singh aka Dulla Surkhpuria. However, the Indian squad would miss the services of their star raider Balwinder Singh aka Kakka who would sit outside because of an injury. The two finalists wrapped up all their league encounters comprehensively to set up the title clash. The visitors too have some renowned names in its ranks namely captain and the star performer, Imtiaz Alam, Babbar Gujar and Arfan Ludhiania. Both the teams are indulged in field and off field planning to put brakes on each others campaign, but none of them was ready to disclose strategy to tame their opponents. While talking to The Tribune, Pak skipper Imtiaz Alam said, “ We have chalked out a special strategy to derail the winning march of the host team. As the Indian team would play before a home crowd, they would be under pressure and we would capitalise on the opportunity”. Later during the day, the Pakistan team sweat it out at the stadium. Team officials said they were working to find some chinks that could prove fatal for the opposition. While the Indian skipper seemed quite confident when he said that though, there would be enormous pressure on the home side as they would play before a possible capacity crowed of nearly 50,000 spectators, but considering the performance so far, they would easily overcome the last hurdle. |
