Chhat Bir Zoo: Breeding Season
Chhat (Banur), March 27 Temporary barricades have been raised at the entry to these enclosures with a view to providing birds with a peaceful atmosphere to breed and rear young ones. “The sound of vehicles not only disturbs birds but also poses danger to the eggs meant for hatching,” said a zookeeper. The number of painted storks at the zoo has been on the rise. From five to seven birds earlier, the zoo now boasts of housing more than 50 painted storks. Currently, over five pairs have laid eggs in the enclosures and are keeping round-the-clock vigil of their eggs. The parents hatch eggs for three to four weeks, at times remaining thirsty and without food. They keep a regular vigil on their eggs from treetops. Both male and female birds take rest after a couple of hours in a day while guarding their eggs. Visitors to this section enjoy seeing birds perched atop the nesting place without any movement. “First I thought it was some kind of a mural or statue. Later, the zookeeper told me that it was a male bird guarding his eggs,” said Tisha, a college student from Zirakpur on her visit to the zoo. “The parents often fear attack on their eggs from other birds and guard these during daytime,” said another zookeeper. Zookeepers said more care was needed during this period and seasonal diets, including small fish, was being provided to birds regularly. |

Schoolchildren have T20 blast
Mohali, March 27 Children held the key to the day's celebrations as they were present in large numbers at the stadium. Bret Lee topped the chart of children's expectations and he pleased them all with his first appearance in his first outing of the IPL-III season. The entire stadium was dotted with the home team flags accompanied with loud cheering. Smalls groups supported the Tricolour in their hands and danced to the beats from the famous patriotic number of "Rang De Basanti". Interestingly, the magic of the willow, associated largely with the boys, was enjoyed equally by girls present at the stadium. The crowd participation was almost deafening anytime the Kolkata Knight Riders lost a wicket. The response was equally matching whenever the hosts hit a boundary or even had a close shave. A sizeable number of supporters wore masks. However, there was some disappointment as the star attraction, Shah Rukh Khan, failed to turn up for the match. Preity Zinta made the day for many among the crowd who managed their hand at the T-shirts she threw after the conclusion of the Knight Riders innings. What was interesting that spectators continued to trickle inside the stadium over an hour after the match had started. The stadium was also rife with rumours that Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan was also expected at the venue. However, the Kings XI fans were again disappointed as the team lost its third match at the
PCA. Machine develops snag Spectators had a tough time entering the stadium as a large number of tickets were not cleared by the newly installed ticket checking machines. An executive was put on the job who facilitated entry with his personal card.
