Pharmacist accused of molestation
Jalandhar, March 15 A resident of Valmiki Mohalla at Basti Danismanda, the woman went to the dispensary to take medicine for her stomachache on Wednesday. After retuning home, she informed her husband that the “doctor” (pharmacist) present there asked her to lie down on the table in the physical examination room. The “doctor” touched her private parts during her physical examination that too in the absence of any nurse whereas she was suffering from only stomachache, she said, adding that the “doctor” had asked her to come after two days for further check-up but she said she would not go again there at all. Talking to The Tribune, the woman’s husband said he had told her that her physical examination might be required for her treatment. He asked her to go on Friday as called by the “doctor” and said if he repeated the same thing on that day, they would lodge a complaint with his seniors. The woman’s husband further said the “doctor” molested her on Friday too. Controlling his anger, he went to the dispensary and came to know from other medical staff that Kuldeep Singh was a mere pharmacist. At this, he and his wife lodged formal complaints with Civil Surgeon S.S. Walia, Commissioner of Police Gaurav Yadav
on Friday itself. When contacted, the Civil Surgeon said he had already marked an inquiry into the incident to Assistant Civil Surgeon (ACS) Sanjiv Babuta. To a query, he said the inquiry would be done in routine and it might take four days for the ACS to submit a report. In reply to a question about how a pharmacist can prescribe medicines for treating patients, the Civil Surgeon said the entire matter would be cleared after inquiry. Jalandhar, March 15 The students reached the DAC early in the morning to submit their forms. Some came from far off villages from the Malwa belt. Among the applicants a majority were Post Graduate students with some even pursuing their PhDs. However the minimum educational qualification was plus two. Karamjit Kaur, B.A, B.Ped and a resident of Adampura village in Bathinda, said she has been trying hard to find a suitable teacher job but no such opportunity came her way. “As soon as I saw the advertisement for the post of constable I applied for the post. And since my family’s financial position is not so well I applied without any second thoughts. Moreover there are not much job opportunities coming up in state”, she added. A local applicant, Henry Joseph who did his graduation in BCA, said, “Nothing can beat the status and financial security of a government job. Especially state government job has its own charm and nothing can be as rewarding as applying for this post.” Earlier the boy has been working with Dr. B. R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT) in the Computer Department. Among other applicants was Kamaldeep Singh and Pawan Rana both BA, PGDCA who maintained that the state job opportunities have virtually decreased in the past some time. “While the private sector does not ensure a secure life. We would be able to pursue our higher education after becoming a constable in Punjab Police”, they added. It might be noted that there were as many as 1214 total sanctioned posts for both male and female constables in the state. The number of sanctioned posts for female constables in the district was 97 for the district police and 194 for PAP while 123 posts were advertised for male constables in PAP and 97 in the district police. Sub-Inspector, Vijay Kanwar Paul who was present on the spot said that a constable avails a starting salary of 10,000 plus with other benefits. “A good financial secure life has become a necessity. Perhaps it is due to this reason that the youth turned up in large number”, he added. |

Travel agent’s victim rescued from Afghanistan
Jalandhar, March 15 Sudesh Kumar (29), a resident of the local Bootan Mandi, was duped by a Chandigarh-based agent with the promise of sending him to Dubai on the basis of a written commitment. The victim deposited a sum of Rs 3 lakh to the agent for reaching Dubai. Though Sudesh was initially taken to Dubai, the travel agent later fraudulently took him to Afghanistan. “After landing in Afghanistan I was arrested on the charges of fake visa. It was a harrowing stay with poor living conditions. It was only after parents sent me Rs 60,000 including fine and ticket charges that I was able to return back home,” he added. Ramoowalia said, “The youth is misguided and later taken to Iraq through improper channel.” He emphasised that though migration to Iraq was banned by the Indian government, the fraud travel agents lure the youth with the promise of providing better jobs. Ramoowalia has also written a letter to the Indian Ambassador at Baghdad to help control the exploitation of Indian youth. He also urged Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to act against the bogus travel agents. |

Jalandhar, March 15 Vijay ascended the water tank located in a park of Basti Gujan locality falling under police station number 5 at about 3 pm on Sunday. Soon after climbing the water tank, he started issuing threats by hanging from the parapet of the tank for a while. On seeing the youth hanging from the parapet, several persons gathered near the tank and shouted in an attempt to persuade the youth not to jump. In the meantime, someone informed the police control room (PCR) after which a PCR team and several police personnel led by ADCP S.K. Kalia and SHO Nirmal Singh reached the spot.The police officials also tried to persuade the youth to descend from the water tank but in vain. At this, the police officials sent stealthily Nirmal Singh’s gunman Baldev Singh followed by three other policemen on the water tank. On reaching the top, they overpowered Vijay Kumar and brought him down. “During preliminary interrogation, he gave two reasons for climbing the water tank and issuing threats to jump from its top,” the police officials said. “Firstly, he is in love with a girl whose family members were not ready for their marriage and he wanted to persuade them for the purpose. And secondly, he asked for Rs 1,000 from his father, Nanak, but the latter refused him.” Vijay was released on bail after being produced in a local court today. |

D.K. Mahia, District Education Officer (Secondary), has recommended cancellation of Class XII examination at Government Secondary School, Bhikhiwind, 35 km from here. Mahia said the recommendation has been sent to the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) as there cases of mass cheating at the centre. She said today there were examinations of accountancy, biology and vocational paper at the centre. She said the centre of Bir Baba Budha Sahib, Patti, and others too were checked and the situation was found to be satisfactory.

Punjab Food and Civil Supplies Minister Adesh Pratap Singh Kairon distributed cheques worth Rs 4 crore for developmental works to 109 panchayats of Patti, Chohla Sahib and of Naushehra Pannuan blocks today. Functions were organised at different places in this regard. He said the state government has made adequate arrangements for the wheat storage for the coming season.
