Jalandhar, March 12
It was a black day for the Punjab Police when the Station House Officer (SHO), Adampur, Sukha Singh, was arrested for his alleged involvement in the theft of Rs 60 lakh at the house of an NRI in the Garden Colony here.

There were many red faces in the Jalandhar Police Division when Sukha Singh was nabbed in the wee hours today by senior police officers for abetting the theft that took place on the night of March 4.

Four unidentified persons had forced their way into the house and looted the money after brandishing a pistol at the maid servant of the house, who was alone at that time.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Sukha Singh was remanded in three-day police custody to ascertain the circumstances in which the incident took place and the involvement of the cop in the case. He has been charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The breakthrough in the case came following the arrest of two persons, Sukhwinder Singh Sukha and Anup Singh, alias Nupi, the mastermind behind the incident, yesterday.

The police has so far recovered Rs 53 lakh from Sukhwinder Singh and Nupi, while the remaining Rs 7 lakh, Rs 3.50 lakh each had been allegedly paid by the accused to the SHO to shield them and save them from arrest, are still to be recovered.

The two other accused - Monu and Angrez Singh - are still absconding. Anup and Sukhminder had been arrested in the past for criminal activities.

Sources said Anup Singh was the friend of NRI Charanjit Singh and used to accompany him whenever the latter was in India on almost all his important dealings here. As such he was aware of the huge cash available at the house since Charanjit had recently sold some land recently.

He hatched a plan and involved his accomplices in executing his plan. After the loot, Nupi came to know from his sources that the police was onto him and that his arrest was imminent anytime. He then contacted the SI, who was known to them, at the New Baradari area in Jalandhar, and asked him to save them, the sources added.

The SHO agreed and the bribe was given to him by the accused.

Retired postmaster found dead, family unconscious

Jalandhar, March 12
A retired postmaster was found dead and his family  members were found lying in an unconscious state this morning at their residence in Basti Peerdad here.

The deceased, Gurdip Singh (62), and his family members seemed to have been poisoned through some spray or food. The incident came to light when a neighbour knocked the door and found everyone in the house, including the wife of the deceased, their son, daughter-in-law and a three-month-old grandson, in an unconscious state. All are recuperating in a private hospital.

The police is suspecting the role of someone known to the family. Officials have taken samples of food and milk from the kitchen for chemical analysis. The police is also waiting for medical reports.

Since all family members were in an unconscious state, the police has not yet been able to establish any incident of theft. Since mobile phones, wrist watches and other items lying in open were found untouched, the chances of theft seemed remote. The statements of the family members are still to be recorded.

Rajpal Singh Sandhu, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), said all angles were being probed and a case was being registered. — TNS
