After their long struggle led to a successful beginning of the process of promotions of lecturers as principals, the Government School Lecturers Union, Punjab, has now decided to expose the government over the promotions of vocation masters as principals.

The union thus has chalked out a programme to organise district-level ‘Sanmann Samaroh’, where it would honour the newly promoted principals from lecturer and headmaster cadres and mobilise support against the promotions of vocation masters.

HMV denies migration certificate to football player
Kusum Arora/Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, March 14
For a national-level football player and former HMV student, seeking a migration certificate to another college has become a source of harassment. The incident has brought to the fore the fierce competition between colleges to reap rewards at the top level in sports. At the same time it has also opened up a Pandora’s Box on whether the well-being of a player is subservient to the glory of the institution.

Sharanpreet Kaur, a former student of BA-I of Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya shifted to Guru Hargobind Khalsa College, Gurusar Sdhar under Panjab University, Chandigarh, during the previous academic session (2009-10).

She had been availing free education and sports facilities at the college.

Talking to The Tribune, she said it was one of her coaches who harassed her for no fault of hers. “After this incident, I decided to shift my college. However, I was not aware that it would land me in unwarranted trouble,” she said.

The football player, despite approaching the college authorities, returned empty handed as she was told to pay the amount of money spent on her by the college authorities.

Even repeated meetings of the girl with the lecturers of the Sports Department went futile. “The college authorities demanded an approximate sum of Rs 1 lakh and then seek migration. Whereas there is no such rule which prohibits a student from migrating to other university”, she said.

“It has been months since I have been running from pillar to post to get a migration certificate. Two other football players of college had also migrated to another university along with me. While they were given the migration certificate, I was denied for no fault of mine”, she quipped.

Inderjeet Singh, Registrar of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, said a student was free to migrate to any university. “The college authorities should not harass the student in the name of migration. Instead they should help the student on moral grounds. I would personally look in to the matter and help the student in every possible way,” he maintained.

Meanwhile, HMV Principal J. Kackeria said the student should have informed the Head of the Department of Sports regarding the alleged tussle.

“The college spends a massive amount of money for the benefit of the players. And in return we also seek that the student plays well for the institution. It will be virtually difficult for us if students keep on shifting to other universities like this,” she added.

Kackeria assured that she would personally look into the matter and talk to both the coaches regarding the actual cause. “I will take appropriate action later,” she added.
