Clash for the Top: 2nd test: day 4
Kolkata, February 17 Only 34.1 overs could be bowled between the weather disruptions and the Indian spinners managed to knock off three South Africans wickets to reduce them to 115 in 35 overs. Hashim Amla once again stands between India and victory after his patient 80-ball 49 with Ashwell Prince (0) giving him company at stumps. South Africa still need 232 runs to make India bat again in the match even though the hosts would hope to polish off the remaining seven wickets tomorrow to draw the series and remain the number one Test team. Both the Indian spinners Amit Mishra (2/15) and Harbhajan Singh (1/31) troubled the South African batsmen with plenty of turn that was on offer at the Eden Gardens pitch. Even though Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men are eager to have a go at the South Africans tomorrow, there is bad news for them as the Met office forecast predicted more rain tomorrow. The final day's proceedings tomorrow will be held half-an-hour in advance and the play is scheduled to begin at 8.45 am. Play could have started early: Kirsten
Disappointment writ large on his face, India coach Gary Kirsten today indirectly took a dig at the CAB for a delayed start of one and half hours on day four of the second and final Test against South Africa here. Bad light and intermittent rain interrupted most of the day's proceedings as only 34.1 overs of play was possible as South Africa were 115 for three -- still trailing by 232 runs -- at the close of play on the penultimate day. "It would have been handy to have 50 overs today. But that's what we were dealt with. We just have to get on with it and use the time we have left with," Kirsten rued. There was no rain in the morning, still the match was delayed by 90 minutes. Indirectly criticising CAB's facilities in getting the ground ready today, he said play could have started a little early. "Obviously, this morning when we arrived here, we could have played in. It was disappointing not to be on the field then. That's the way it is. We can't fight weather," he said. Asked whether he was unhappy with the facilites, Kirsten said he was not the person to comment on this but it was disappointing. "That's not for me to comment. it was disappointing not been able to have more time this morning. we were out over one and half hour this morning. That's not for me to take up, that's just the way it is," said the South African. Zaheer pulls muscle, not serious
India had an injury scare today after pace spearhead Zaheer Khan developed a stiff leg muscle at a time when his team needs him most to win the ongoing second Test and level the two-match series against South Africa. Having completed his spell of five overs, the left-arm quickie returned to the pavilion after developing some strain on his right leg. It seemed he pulled up a muscled after the last ball of the 10th over.

Jaipur to have tight security for India-SA ODI
Jaipur, February 17 According to police officials, the security plan has been formulated on the basis of three segments to ensure the safety of players while they are in transit, during their stay at the hotel and at Sawai Man Singh Stadium during the practice sessions and the match. Both the teams are expected to arrive here on February 19 and will be escorted to Hotel Rajputana Sheraton in a security convoy. Traffic and parking restrictions will be imposed on the route from the airport to the hotel and also in the vicinity of the hotel and the stadium complex. The entire hotel floor occupied by the players will be sealed from February 19 to 22 with strict restrictions on visitors. The players will also have to forego shopping and sight seeing in the city. Following Pune blast, the city police has suggested to the RCA that the players should refrain from venturing out of their hotel or the stadium. The police has chalked out do's and don'ts for the cricket teams that came up for discussion at a security review meeting yesterday. IGP (Jaipur Range I) BL Soni said, "I will suggest that the squads should avoid shopping and other activities in the city. I will tell the RCA not to take players for any kind of pre-match or post-match partying or shopping as it would be quite difficult for us to be with them in public places." The stadium too will be turned into a fortress on February 21. Though the exact number of the security personnel is yet to be decided, sources said there will be over 500 men from police and specialized security enforcement agencies, including the ATS and emergency response team. Rajasthan Home Minister Shanti Dhariwal said, We have taken into consideration the Pune blast while planning the security arrangements at the stadium. Though the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) is satisfied with our security measures, we will be deploying more than required number of policemen for the match. Meanwhile, the RCA has started sale of tickets for India-South Africa ODI at bank counters. Earlier, the tickets for the match were only being sold online. However, after complaints of students and minors about they being unable to purchase tickets due to lack of credit or debit card the cricketing body decided to open counter sale of the ticket. It has roped in Union Bank of India for selling tickets, though the spectators will still have to fill a form and submit valid identity documents to buy tickets. We will be selling 2,000 tickets through bank counters and these are primarily from north and south block of the stadium, said an RCA official. |
Bhagwant memorial hockey trophy to remain in locker?
Kanchan Vasdev Tribune News Service
Ludhiana, February 17 A faction of Grewal Sports Association led by Paramjit Singh Grewal has bluntly refused to hand it over to oragnisers led by Gurpinder Grewal, stating they could not trust them with cup moulded out of one kg gold worth Rs 18 lakhs. It would be for the first time in the history of Kila Raipur games that the trophy would rest inside the locker. While the organisers led by Gurpinder Singh Grewal today said the trophy would be on the table on February 21 and would be handed over to the winning team, Paramjit Singh, general secretary of a faction of GSA said they would not hand over the trophy to them at any cost. They are backed by the ruling party and the police is at their beck and call. They sent police officials at our village asking for the trophy but that does not mean that we would coolly hand it over to them. No way we will give it to them, said Paramjit adding that the three office bearers of association had to sign over its handing over report. Does that group enjoy the confidence of three office bearers? he asked. On the other hand, Gurpinder Singh Grewal said there was no controversy atall. He said it was a running trophy and was handed over to winning hockey team on the stand only. It was infact a showpiece that was used for clicking pictures. Later it was retained by the organisers and the winning team was made to walk with its replica, said Gurpinder. He however claimed that there was no controversy and the organisers would definitely ensure that the trophy was taken out this year too like every year. There is no point arguing over this as we are very clear about it, he said. |
Rooney claims first leg for Man U
Milan, February 17 The hosts had a series of other chances before Paul Scholes swung at a Darren Fletcher cross with his right foot, the ball hit his left shin and then bobbled in off the post. United then became favourites ahead of the second leg on March 10 when Rooney netted with headers after superb crosses from Antonio Valencia and Fletcher. Substitute Clarence Seedorf pulled one back five minutes from time with a superb backheel but Milan failed to equalise after huge late pressure where United's Carrick was dismissed for two bookings. "We started slowly but overall I thought we were the better team, but I was frustrated in the first half because some people were not doing their jobs right," Rooney told Sky Sports. "At 3-1 I thought we were the only team likely to score again. But to win 3-2 at the San Siro is still a great result." United fans again noisily protested against owners the Glazer family in Milan's main square before kickoff but they were soon silenced at a rocking 80,000 capacity San Siro. Beckham sent in a free kick and United left back Patrice Evra made a hash of a clearance, sending the ball across the box where Ronaldinho was waiting to lash in a volley off Carrick. The Brazilian is still not quite as sparkling as he was in his heyday at Barcelona but he produced several cute flicks and forced Edwin van der Sar into three neat saves. Reuters |
