Suspect boxes in dustbin spark bomb scare

Ambala February 15
Panic reigned for a while in the army cantonment today noon when a sanitary worker noticed two packed cardboard boxes wrapped in gunny cloth in a dustbin near the Kharga canteen. He informed army personnel in the area following with a district police officer arrived at the scene.

Members of an army bomb disposal squad, which rushed there, decided not to carry away the suspect boxes, fearing they might contain explosives. They instead tested a mild explosive in the dustbin.

It was later found the cardboard boxes were packed with some food items. “No explosive was found in the boxes,” said Ambala SP Bharti Arora.

Following the rise in terrorist activities in the country the army has taken several precautionary measures in the cantonment.

Six injured in mishap

Rajpura, February 15
Six persons were injured in an accident near Damanheri railway crossings in the wee hours today. As per police officials, a speeding SUV on its way towards Sangrur from Rajpura rammed into an accidental truck and all its occupants received serious injuries.

The injured have been identified as Randeep Kaur (20), Jagdeep Singh (37), Deepinder Kaur (33), Kuldeep Kaur (30), Harsh (4) and Khushi Ram (38), all resident of Punia colony in Sangrur.

The injured were taken out of the vehicle after around 90 minutes with the help of the area residents.

Police officials said two trucks collided on the road and could not be removed of the road late last night and the speeding SUV rammed into one of the trucks.

The accident took place in the wee hours when the occupants of the SUV were on their way towards Sangrur after attending a marriage function near Rajpura. All injured have been referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, in a serious condition. Police officials said a case in this connection had been registered.

3 arrested under Copyright Act

Three employees of an orchestra were arrested last night from a local marriage palace under the Copyright Act.

Acting on the complaint of Ramesh Dutt from Sped in Touch Network, Sector 34-A, Chandigarh Police conducted raids at the marriage palace near Kailon village and found orchestra playing songs without permission.

The police arrested Bunty, Gurpreet Singh and Gurjit Singh, all resident of Sangrur, under various sections of the Copyright Act.

Irate at the arrests, members of DJ Operators’ Union, Punjab, converged at the Kharar police station today and alleged that they had been falsely implicated and were harassed.

They took plea that songs played at wedding were downloaded from various websites. Sangrur DJ Operators’ Union president Prakash Chand and members of unions at Dhuri, Sunam, Patiala and Nabha said the Act was not transparent.

Bank attaches developer’s property

Kotak Mahindra Bank today attached the property of Sawan Land Developers on the Badala road.

The Duty Magistrate, naib-tehsildar Ajit Singh Laungia, police and bank officials took the property of Prakash Chand, a resident of Phase X, Mohali.

The bank officials said the developers had taken a loan of Rs 2.5 crore and mortgaged 0.75 acres of the land to the bank, but they found that Prakash Chand had duped the bank by allegedly selling a piece of land that was already mortgaged to the bank.

The bank lodged a complaint with the economic offences wing of the Chandigarh police and a case was registered in November 2009.

The bank alleged that the accused had taken a loan of Rs 2.5 crore after mortgaging agriculture land in Kharar and Ropar.

However, it was found that he had sold the land and even the revenue records did not show any such land in their name for which they had taken loan.

The accused was also named in GMADA’s complaint on February 11. GMADA had complained that Prakash Chand and his accomplice, Mohall Lal from Kharar, had illegally carved out colonies in Jhungian and Fatehullapur areas.

They have been booked under Section 36 of the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act.

Fun-packed day at MDAV School

The annual prize distribution function of MDAV Senior Secondary Public School, Ambala City, was organised here today.

Ambala IG KK Sindhu was the chief guest. Rajshree Singh, SP (traffic) Haryana, and Bharti Arora SP, Ambala, were the guest of honour.

The function was dedicated to Hindi language. The cultural function presented by the students focused on the Vedic culture. Folk songs and western music were the main attraction. The students also presented a patriotic skit.

Sindhu said, besides books, students should involve themselves in cultural and sports activities. He asked the students to work hard to achieve their goal.

Rajender Nath, chairman of the DAV management committee, distributed scholarships to students who got 90 per cent or above marks in board examination.

“Masti Ki Pathshala” proved the greatest entertainer of the evening during the annual and prize distribution function of Anee’s School here today.

Students danced to “Masti Ki Pathshala” depicting fun and learning at school. MLA Kharar Balbir Singh Sidhu was the chief guest. He said good schooling was the basis of bright future of the country.

Principal Aneet Goel said the school was committed to provide quality education.

Students presented items titled band of colours. Tiny tots gave spectacular performance on “Nani Ki Kahani”, fusion set the stage on fire with music and “koko jumbo” enthralled the audience.

Students presented a Punjabi play “Duja Pakh (other side of coin)” depicting varied human behaviour and Punjabi dance dhola remained a foot tapping performance.

Kharar college bag cricket title

The team of Guru Gobind Singh College of Management and Technology won the Inter-College Cricket Tournament organised by Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, recently.

Around 40 teams from different colleges participated in the tournament. Matches were played between various engineering colleges affiliated with the university.

GGSCMT, Kharar, won their first match, defeating Shivalik Pharmacy College, Nangal.

They then defeated Indo Global College, Abhipur, and Chitkara Engineering College.

In the final, GGSCMT beat CEC, Landran, at Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib. CEC were last year’s zonal winners. This is GGSCMT’s first inter-college tournament title.

Upender Singh of the CSE was declared the man of the match.

GGSCMT chairman Surinder Pal Singh Sachdeva and director Dr SS Bedi congratulated the players for their achievement.

Nawanshahr lads emerge soccer champs

Nawanshahr lads blanked Kapurthala 4-0 to bag the 62nd Senior State Championship for the second consecutive time at Polo Ground, Patiala, here today.

Patiala lads finished in the third place.

In the final, Nawanshahr outplayed Kapurthala, scoring all four goals in the first half of the match. None of the teams could score a goal in the second half.

For Nawanshahr, Taranjeet scored a brace, while Hari Singh and Atinder scored one goal each.

IGP, Patiala zone, Paramjeet Singh Gill gave away prizes to the winners. Patiala junior team, which won the junior championship at Abohar, was also honoured.

Paramjeet Singh Grewal, Prof Babu Singh Guram, Darshan Singh Mann, Wazir Singh and Surjit Singh Gill were among others present.

Handling of biomedical waste
Sector-16 hospital to follow AIIMS, HC told

The Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research daily generates 660 kg waste for incinerator, 360 kg glass and 220 kg plastic waste.

It is 150 kg, six kg and 30 kg in case of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32; and 100 kg, 5 kg and 20 kg, respectively, in Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16.

The information was handed over to the Punjab and Haryana High Court during the hearing of a petition filed in public interest on waste management in the Sector 16 hospital.

As the petition came up this morning, the High Court was told that the Sector 16 hospital would soon have a system to handle biomedical waste on the pattern of New Delhi-based All-India Institute of Medical Education and Research.

In an affidavit placed before the Division Bench of Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Jasbir Singh, director, health services, Dr Manjit Singh stated that sub-committees had been formed and these had carried out a survey of the system adopted by the AIIMS.

An apology for cancelling expression of interest of August 19 last, when the matter was pending before the High Court, too, was tendered.

The High Court had, on the previous date of hearing, asked the UT administration to explain why status report had not been filed on the petition filed in public interest on the hazards faced by people living in the vicinity of the Sector 16 hospital.

The Bench had also asked the administration to inform the court on the period of completion of the proposed projects.

The directions came on a petition filed by Ominder Singh and others against the Chandigarh administration.

They had sought directions against the burning of bio-medical waste. Directions had also been sought for the installation of air pollution control device. The coming up of seven-storey out patients’ department against the zonal plan had also been challenged.

London boy’s plea heard

Justice Augustine George Masih of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Ministry of External Affairs and other respondents to consider London-based NGO’s plea for providing a travel document to 12-year-old Indian boy, whose mother had allegedly abandoned him in the streets of Southhall in March, 2008.

The directions were issued during the hearing of the plea filed by London Borough of Ealing. Its counsel, Anil Malhotra, said the authorities had already confirmed the issuance of passport to Gurinderjit Singh by the Regional Passport Authority. It was valid till March 29.

The counsel for London Borough informed the court the requirements of issuance of passport were completed and an application had been moved for the same.

Murder Bid
MLA’s nephew gets bail

Karun Chaudhary, nephew of Kalka MLA Pradeep Chaudhary, got bail here today after spending two days in judicial custody. Karun was arrested on Saturday after he had gone underground when he was booked in an attempt to murder case.

On December 31, Karun and his friends Robin and Dhruv allegedly assaulted a Panchkula police official at the Sector 14 police station with sharp-edged weapons.

The victim was admitted to hospital and the police booked Karun under Sections 307, 323, 324 and 506 of the IPC. After the complainant, the victim was transferred to Kaithal and Section 307 was dropped from the FIR of the accused.

Seven get life term in assault case

Additional District and Sessions Judge Raj Rahul Garg today sentenced seven persons to rigorous imprisonment for life for attacking a Ram Darbar resident.

The convicts, Arun Kumar, Ashwini Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Praveen Kumar, Rajender Kumar, Sanjay Kumar and Sunny, were also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 each.

They had been held guilty of attacking 32-year-old brother Bawinder, alias Bobby, who succumbed to his injuries at the GMCH, Sector 32, in September, 2006.

Bajinder Kumar had mentioned in his complaint that his neighbour Praveen had old enmity with the deceased.

On that fateful day, when Bobby came home after dropping his mother, Bala Devi, in Sector 21, Parveen, along with others, attacked him with ‘lathis’ and baseball bats.

Youth sets three cars afire, held

The police arrested a Mani Majra resident today on the charge of setting three cars afire in connivance with his friend at the Mohalla Dera Sahib in Mani Majra in the wee hours.

The accused, a student, used to park his car in the open space in front of the complainant’s residence. The latter had objected to it and infuriated over this, he set the cars afire.

The complainant, Deep Singh Gill, running a driving school at the NAC, reported to the police that his son was not well last night and he was attending to him.

Around 2:20 am, he saw a youth sprinkling oil from a can on his cars. Before he could react, the miscreant set his cars afire and sped away in a white Ford Ikon car (CH23T-0694).

He identified the miscreant as Harpreet Singh Dhillon of Mani Majra and the other youth accompanying him as Sonu.

Gill called the fire brigade, which reached the spot and doused the flames. He informed the police, which reached the spot and launched a manhunt for the accused.

The car was later traced to the NAC. Gill said his Hyundai Santro car (CH04-9326) was burnt completely while the other two cars (CH03R-3486 and CH04F-0775) were burnt partially.

Investigating officer Skatar Singh said Dhillon was traced from the registration number of the car while his friend Sonu was still absconding.

Dhillon had no past crime record and it appeared that he set the cars afire to take revenge. The police registered a case under Section 435 of the Indian Penal Code against the accused.

4 held for brawls

The police arrested four persons for their involvement in two brawl incidents. Palu Ram of Sector 22 reported that he was beaten up and threatened by occupants of a Hyundai Santro car (CH04K-9578) in the same sector on Sunday.

The accused were identified as Bhumik Pathak of Sector 50, Mandeep Singh of Burail and Ashish Sharma of Sector 45. The police arrested the trio after registering a case under Sections 323, 506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

In another incident, Naveen Kumar of Dhanas reported that Kuldip Singh of Sector 22, along with Dharminder, Ravi and two others, thrashed him near the ISBT at Sector 43 on Monday last.

The police arrested Kuldip after registering a case under Sections 325 and 34 of the IPC while the other accused were still at large.

Laptop stolen

Pritam Verma of Sector 70 at Mohali reported that someone stole his laptop from his car (PB65F-9770), parked in Sector 7-C, on Sunday. A case of theft was registered.

Caught stealing

Harbans Singh Gill of Sector 38 reported that Azad Singh of Sector 25 was caught while stealing a wood door from a house in his locality on Sunday. He was booked and arrested.

Crime: Two killed in road accidents

Zirakpur, February 15
Two persons, including a woman, were killed and two others injured in two separate road accidents at Zirakpur today.

In the first incident, Mohan Lal (40), a driver of Punjab ADGP (security), died after being hit by a speeding Innova near Bristol resort on the Chandigarh-Ambala National Highway here early this morning while two more who were travelling in the car also sustained injuries.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

The incident took place when Mohan Lal, a resident of Bijanpur village, Dera Bassi, was walking towards the Singhpura bus stand after completing his duty in Silver City where the SUV coming from Chandigarh side hit him from behind.

He fell in a pit near the road and died on the spot. However, two passengers of the Innova sustained injuries and were rushed to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, from where they were referred to the GMCH-32, Chandigarh, for further treatment, added the police.

The body of the deceased has been handed over to his family after conducting the postmortem at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi.

The investigating officer stated that though the driver of the vehicle managed to escape from the spot, he had been booked and the Innova was impounded.

In another incident, a 29-year-old woman died after a private school bus hit the motorcycle she was riding pillion with her husband. The deceased had been identified as Nidhi, a resident of Balaji Enclave, Zirakpur. She is survived by her husband and a child.

The police stated that her husband, Lokesh Kumar, who was riding the motorcycle, escaped unhurt. The couple was going to Chandigarh where a bus of Saint Solder International School, Sector 28, driven by an unidentified person, hit the motorcycle from behind.

Lokesh lost his control over the bike and fell on the road.

Nidhi was crushed under the wheels of the school bus and died on the spot, the police added.

Though the bus driver managed to flee from the spot, the bus had been impounded.

A case has been registered against the bus driver.

Body of infant found

A newly born male was found dead near a well below the rail over bridge on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway here today. The police said it received the information in the afternoon from members of the truck union. They informed the police that they had seen a couple throwing the infant from the bridge.

The police team reached the spot and took the infant to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, where doctors declared him brought dead. A case had been registered.

Theft

Less than a week after a house was burgled at a society, yet another incident of theft took place in the same area last night.

Thieves decamped with jewellery worth lakhs of rupees and cash after breaking into a house at Saini Vihar, House No. 674.

According to sources, Ram Murti alleged that he had gone along with his family to Jalandhar to meet his relative.

When his daughter Vijay Kumari returned she found the locks of the house broken and found the house ransacked. She immediately called her father who reached here this morning.

He alleged that around 5 tola gold ornaments, cash around Rs 10,000 and two digital cameras were missing from the almirah.

The residents alleged that the incidents of theft were on a rise and the police was unable to act in the area.

2 booked for smuggling cattle

A truck loaded with cows and oxen was seized by the district police here today. The animals were allegedly being taken for slaughter at Uttar Pradesh.

According to the police, a truck (HR-37- 7574) was stopped after receiving a tip off by a night patrolling party at Morni road.

The driver and his companion, however, succeeded to escape in the garb of darkness in the nearby forest area.

After searching the truck, 11 cows and 8 oxen were found loaded.

A case has been registered against unknown accused and the animals have been sent to the gaushala.

St Stephen’s to meet Satluj in final

St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, will clash with Satluj Public School, Sector 4, in the final of the Satluj T20 Championship Trophy being organised at Satluj grounds on February 16.

In the second semifinal held yesterday, fine all-round performance by Manan Vohra helped Satluj Public School defeat APJ Kharar by eight wickets.

Earlier, in the first semifinal held between St Stephen’s School and DAV School, Sector 15, on February 12, St Stephen’s had won the match by 126 runs.

Batting first APJ Kharar scored 114 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their stipulated 20 overs.

Sahil (39) and Kapil Punia (32) were the top scorers for APJ team. For Satluj School, Manan Vohra and Harpreet Singh bowled tight line and length and did not allow any liberty to APJ batsmen. Both Manan and Harpreet scalped three wickets each, giving away just 14 and 19 runs, respectively.

Chasing a victory target of 115 runs, Satluj Public School did not face any problem in overhauling the target in just 14.2 overs after losing two wickets.

APJ bowlers failed to restrict the Satluj batsmen, who scored at will and punished lose deliveries. Ankush Dhariwal (50) and Manan Vohra (32) and Gurprabhjot Singh (23 not out) were the main scorers.

Brief scores: APJ Kharar: 114/9 in 20 overs (Sahil 39, Kapil Punia 31; Manan Vohra 3/14, Harpreet Singh 3/19).

Panjab University dominate

Panjab University won the All-India Inter-University Judo Championship (men) by securing 19 points on the concluding day of the tournament here yesterday.

Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, secured the second position with 9.5 points, while Kurukshetra University and MD University, Rohtak, with 6.5 and 3.5 points claimed the third and fourth positions, respectively.

In the 50 kg category, Gagan of PU and Virendrer Singh of KU bagged the first and second positions, respectively, while Sumit Kumar Yadv of MG Kashi, Vidyapeeth University, Varanasi, and Manpreet of GNDU stood third.

In the open weight category, Anil Kumar of GNDU and Jaswinder Singh of PU secured the first and second positions, respectively, while Jaswant of MD University and Rajender of KU stood third.

Healthy Heart Golf a big draw

More than 170 health-conscious senior citizens in the age group of 60-86 years teed off in the Fortis Healthy Heart Golf Tournament on the par-72 greens of the Chandigarh Golf Club here yesterday.

The unique way of celebrating Valentine’s Day was to promote a healthy lifestyle among the senior citizens and educate them about the causes and prevention of heart disease.

Co-sponsored by Chandigarh Golf Club and Fortis, the tournament was played on a stableford basis on 3/4 handicap.

The ceremonial tee-off was done by Col HS Chehel, director, Fortis Hospital, Mohali. The tournament was played in seven categories. There was also a special category for senior lady golfers.

Brig PPS Dhillon won the 60-65 age-group title (18 holes) logging 36 points, with GS Bedi finishing one point behind at 35. The 66-70 category saw SD Verma take the honours with 42 points leaving BS Grewal in second place with 38 points. In the 71-75 age-group, Capt JS Sahi won with 20 points, while Col KS Sandhu secured the runner-up position with 18 points. SS Rao took the title in the 76-80 category with 25 points, whereas TC Chopra came second with 17 points. In the 81-85 age-group, AS Bhinder won with 20 points leaving Brig KS Sandhu at the runner-up position with 19 points.

The oldest participant of the tournament was Capt Shamsher Singh, who scored 12 points.

Saroj Joti won the nine-hole competition among senior ladies. In the 18-hole competition, Vijay Wadhawan was the winner with Dr P Chari occupying the runner-up slot.

Ashish Bhatia, regional director of Fortis healthcare, Col HS Chehal, director of Fortis, Mohali, and Dr Manmeet Mann, head of media and communications, gave away prizes to the winners.

Dr JS Varma, director of cardiology, also gave a speech regarding the potential causes of heart disease. Fortis healthcare thanked president of the Chandigarh Golf Club BS Gill and secretary Nippy Ghai for their support without which this tournament would not have been possible.

Hockey exhibition matches on Feb 20

In order to boost the morale of the Indian hockey team in the run up to the Hockey World Cup to be held in New Delhi from February 28 to March 13,

the Chandigarh administration in association with the AMR Foundation will organise the All Stars Hockey Exhibition Matches at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium on February 20.

Four matches of 20-minute duration will be played.

Sunil Shetty, Shabbir Ahluwalia and former cricket, badminton, tennis, athletics, football, boxing and wrestling players will grace the occasion.

Top functionaries of the AMR Foundation met the UT administration officials, headed by UT Home Secretary Ram Niwas, after which a decision was taken that the UT administration, Chandigarh municipal corporation and UT Tourism, too, would jointly organise the mega event.

A fine all-round performance by Suninder (71 runs and four wickets for 30) helped Nectar Life trounce US Vitamin by 68 runs in the 1st Pharma Cup T20 Cricket Tournament here yesterday.

Nectar Life won the toss and elected to bat first. Suninder blasted the US Vitamin bowlers all over the ground and scored a brilliant 71.

Vishant scored 54 and helped his team reach an impressive 175 in the allotted quota of 20 overs. For US Vitamin, Saurav took five for 32.

Faced with a daunting victory target of 176 in 20 overs, US Vitamin crumbled and were bundled out for 107. Only Pardeep (36 not out) and Rajeev (14) held the innings for sometime but the team fell short of 68 runs.

For Nectar Life, Suninder took four for 30 and Puneet two for 12. In another match, Parabolics beat Dabur by eight wickets. Dabur scored 107 in 19.5 overs. Parkash and Sanjay scored 23 and 19, respectively. Satinder took three for 22.

Parabolics batsmen found no difficulty in reaching the target, which they did in just 13 overs. Hitesh Arora scored a magnificent 63 not out and Nitish 14 not out.

Sidhu brothers strike it rich

Continuing with his winning streak, Gurjiwan Singh Sidhu (75), former joint director, public relations department, Punjab, achieved a hat trick in shot put and hammer throw during the 31st National Master’s Athletics Championship held at Chennai recently.

Sidhu threw the shot put to a distance of 10.30 m in the 75 plus age group to bag the third gold medal in a row.

Similarly, he also won the third gold medal in a row in the hammer throw event by throwing the hammer to a distance of 23.59 m.

He also won silver in the discus throw at the meet, held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Gurjwan was honoured by health minister Punjab Laxmi Kanta Chawla on Republic Day held in Mohali for his sports achievement at the age of 75 and bringing glory to Punjab.

His younger brother Pargat Singh (65) did not lag behind and won gold medal in hammer throw by throwing the hammer to a distance of 36.30 m in his age group.

Both Sidhu brothers were now aiming to win more gold medals for the country during the forthcoming Asian championship to be held in Malaysia in December. They regularly go for practice session in sports stadium, Sector 46.

Carrom selection trials today

Chandigarh, February 15
Selection trials for the All-India Civil Services Carrom Tournament will be held at 11 am at the recreational hall, AG (A and E) Punjab, in Sector 17 here tomorrow.

The tournament is being held at Balewari Karida Sankul, Pune, Maharashtra, from February 23 to 26.

Eligible central government employees of Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh, interested in participate in the tournament may report to Vikas Mathur at 10:30 am at the venue for selection trials.

Athletics meet

Chandigarh, February 15
Aanchal International School, Sector 41, organised its athletics meet and prize distribution function on the school premises here yesterday.

NS Brar, PCS, director, hospitality, Punjab, inaugurated the function by lighting the traditional lamp.

Students participated in various events..

The main attraction was the “Baby Show”, in which students from various schools participated.

Tiny tots were given various titles like “Aanchal Prince”, “Aanchal Princess”, “Heart throb of All”, “Mast-Malang Kid” and “Rosy Cheeks”. Pranav Narang and Shaurya shared the title of Aanchal Prince, while Aditi Sharma and Pihu shared the title of Aanchal Princess.

The baby show had 100 participants. The highlight of the meet was tiny “Cheer Leaders” with pom-pom in their hands. Around 600 children participated in the athletics meet.

A special Valentine’s corner had been created for parents and visitors. Games like handmade cards, tambola and lucky dip were liked by all.

Principal Manju Sood thanked the chief guest.

He stressed upon the need for fostering attitudes of excellence and leadership, building skills in co-curricular activities, creating competencies in academics and sports.
