Padma Shri not for me, but for team: Deep Joshi
Pitthoragarh, January 27 He was born in 1947 at Puriyag estate in Berinag sub-division of Pitthoragarh district and was a former chief of Pradan, an NGO providing professional assistance to those working in rural areas in the sphere of poverty alleviation. He feels that the recognition of social service in India in understood late as its meaning gets confused. The persons who work for poverty alleviation in rural areas in India are equated with someone who has opened an orphanage or old-age home. This is not the case. On the contrary, it requires dedicated work by qualified professionals, said Joshi. Pradan, the NGO run by Deep Joshi, works among small farmers in the area of agriculture, poultry, tussar silk and horticulture. Joshi feels that Indian society is facing big problems in the sphere of poverty and climate change. “Professional approach through NGOs is needed to tackle this challenge,” he added. He said the Padma Shri was not a personal award “but for the group working with me and the recognition of an idea which brought about this change”. The NGO has been working in various states and Joshi also wants to work in Uttarakhand, where he was born, but nothing much has been achieved. “The nature of laws in forest and land use are different in the state, but still we want to work despite these conditions. We have not been able to get the right response from the NGOs working in the state in this sphere,” he said. An alumnus of Motilal Nehru Engineering College, Allahabad (MNR), and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, Joshi opted for community work when he returned from the USA 30 years ago. He did all this despite having a close relationship with Narayan Murthy of Infosys rejecting a slew of attractive job offers. “I was inspired by a doctor couple working in remote areas of Maharashtra and felt that if every qualified person opts to work in rural India, it could change for the better in a short while,” said Joshi over telephone from his home at Gurgaon. |
Society to move SC against parking lot in Rajaji
Dehradun, January 27 In anticipation of the pilgrim rush during the Kumbh (the first Shahi Snan is slated to take place in February 12), the mela authorities are coming up with parking facilities in the corridor inside the Rajaji National Park. While the mela authorities describe this parking lot as that of a temporary nature, the quantum of work done at the site belittles this claim. The Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI) is now preparing to file a PIL in the Supreme Court (SC) in the aftermath of the creation of this parking lot in the Motichoor area of the Rajaji National Park in Uttarakhand. Sources in the WPSI allege that despite the conditional approval for the parking lot given by the Supreme Court, a large-scale destruction of wildlife habitat is taking place, which cannot be recovered once lost. While all this is taking place under the very nose of the Rajaji Park authorities, the WPSI argues that while the SC had given a conditional approval for the parking lot taking in view of the Kumbh, the authorities concerned, including the Public Works Department, were resorting to a rampant destruction of wildlife to facilitate the pilgrims. Rajendra Aggarwal, Uttarakhand Coordinator, WPSI, said: “While there are machines, making a loud noise, operating in this Chilla-Motichoor corridor to clear space for the parking lot, there is a move to divert the natural flow of the Motichoor Rau river. Further, there are also apprehensions that the mela administration is going to fell a dozen trees which could further deteriorate the wildlife habitat in the region”. This is bound to destroy the wildlife habitat and create bigger problems for the wildlife. Meanwhile, the office of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest argued that the Chief Wildlife Warden was taking care of the matter. There are reports that the Uttarakhand Wildlife authorities are under tremendous pressure to facilitate Kumbh Mela works, but that surely seems to be coming at the cost of wildlife. |
Vijay bags 3 gold at Asian meet
Dehradun, January 27 Presently employed with the Uttarakhand police as a constable, Vijay now has her eyes set on the World Games. Participation at the international championship opened new horizons for Vijay Chaudhary. “It was my first international championship and it proved to be an eye opener. She was astonished to see an 80-year-old participant at the meet winning the 100m sprint with a timing below 20 seconds. “The lady gave a mind-boggling performance. She just filled the arena with enthusiasm. Now, I look forward to continuing in the field of athletics even after I cross 70 years of age,” said Chaudhary. But life has never been so easy for Chaudhary outside the field. She is still to get her first promotion that is due since 1993, the time when she was first declared the best athlete in Uttar Pradesh. “I have been fighting the case in court for more than a year, but I am still to get justice whereas Major Yadav who was also declared the best athlete of Uttar Pradesh the same year was promoted later and is now working as a sub-inspector,” said Chaudhary. Chaudhary has participated in various athletics competitions and had been declared the best of UP police in 1993 and 1994. Thereafter, she won the best athletes award in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003
