Dehradun, January 25 Tehri Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Satyaveer Singh, CID headquarters DSP Arun Pandey, Inspector Udham Singh Nagar Mahender Singh Negi and Head
Constable Ramesh Chander Kukreti will be bestowed with the Police Medal for
Meritorious Service. Governor Margaret Alva and Director-General of Police (DGP) Subhash Joshi will
honour police personnel for their good work on the Republic Day at the Parade Ground and Police Headquarters, respectively. The Governor Distinguished Service Medal will be given
to four police officers, DSP Rakesh Chander Pant, JDO Dinesh Chadner Thapliyal, DSP Girish Chander Bijalwan and Nathi Lal Uniyal, by the Governor at the
Parade Ground. While the Distinguished Service Award will be given away to three police personnel and Meritorious Service Medal will be given to 11 cops by the DGP at the Police Headquarters. |
Final rehearsal held
Dehradun, January 25 “Girls and boys from different schools were dressed up in the traditional dresses of different regions of India. Kids, dancing on Garhwali, Gujarati, Punjabi and Marathi tunes, participated in the rehearsal for the Republic Day’s ceremony to connote the diversified cultures of India. Many troupes from the Cultural Department of Almora, Uttarkashi, Garhwal, Nainital and Kumaon have come to spread the vibrant colours of country with their dance and music. The participants have tried to present oneness and brotherhood through their exotic montage,” said Krishna Gaur, music teacher of Government Girls Inter College (GGIC) and coordinator of the programme. Another prime attraction of the ceremony was various drills, parades, march pasts and performances of the trained horses. The folk dances of regions such as Kumaon, Jaunsar and Chapeli and other performances captivated the audiences. Meritorious policemen and brilliant students will be honoured at the main function tomorrow. Students of GGIC, Rajpur Road, CNI Girls Inter College, GGIC, Lakhibagh, Guru Nanak Girls Public College, Khurbuda and Narishilp participated in the gala event. Moreover, the security in Dehradun has been beefed up ahead of the Republic Day’s celebration. SP (City) Jagat Ram Joshi said: “All security arrangements have been put in place. A bomb squad, fire brigade and dog squad have also been deployed to scan any suspected object found specially at or near hotels, restaurants and other areas attracting crowds.” “The police is vigilant. Extra cops have been deployed at crowded places such as inter-state bus terminus, railway station, markets and the Parade Ground,” he added. Security beefed up
Dehradun, January 25 The conference, which was presided over by Director General of Police (DGP) Subhash Joshi saw the participation of senior officers of the department. The Quick Reaction Team
(QRT) and the Guldar team were directed to be deployed on Republic Day. The DGP also ordered the provision of 10 bulletproof helmets to Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Abhinav Kumar. These helmets will be placed in the vehicles of the concerned officials. Directions were also given to conduct checks at the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar, in all pickets and other vital points. |
High alert on Nepal border

Pak spy nabbed in Roorkee
Roorkee/Haridwar, January 25 The police has seized a laptop, which contains very crucial information about the Indian Army and other important documents, including maps of several Indian cantonment areas including the Roorkee cantonment area, a fake PAN card and a fake passport from Ali. According to SP (Rural) Roshan Lal Sharma, Ali was going to courier some vital information to Pakistan via Dubai when the police team pounced upon him today. The SP said Ali had confessed that he had got arms training at terrorist camps by the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen in Pakistan and was working for Pakistani military intelligence. He had come to India via the Dhaka-Kathmandu route. Ali revealed to the special squad that he was given special training in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir for 45 days and knew how to operate Ak-47 and other weapons. For every assignment send by email and parcel, he got instant payment from Dubai and Germany via the Western Union money transfer mode. Ali, who has been living in a Muslim locality here in Roorkee under the name of Asad Ali, a resident of 22, Shahpeer Colony, Meerut, originally belongs to mohalla Hazrat Bal Hazi Shah Saleem, Hajjarwal village in Lahore, said Roshan Lal Sharma. Before coming to Roorkee, Ali had also stayed at Lucknow and Meerut. Without revealing further details, the SP said that police teams have been rushed to all these addresses for further investigation. Earlier, the police got a tip-off that Ali would arrive at BSM Chowk to send some courier from there. “An Anti-Terror Squad and SOTF team had been constituted to nab him,” said the SP. “We are also investigating his other links and accomplices in India,” he said. ATS in charge RB Chamola said that intelligence agencies had passed on the information that a Pakistani ISI agent was in the Haridwar region. |
Banaras Hindu University team wins debate
Nainital, January 25 The Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr BS Bisht while kicking off the debate emphasised on the importance of communication and social awareness amongst the university youth to combat the large number of crises being faced by society. The chief guest for the event Dr MP Singh, who is the Executive Chairman, Sulabh International, expressed confidence that such discussions would lead to a broader understanding of entrepreneurship and increased confidence for the participants. Director, Communication, DB Kumar dwelt upon the urgent need for the development of soft skills amongst students. Four sessions of intense debating and discussion marked the event with teams from Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi, Guru Nanak Dev University at Amritsar, Punjab Agricultural University at Ludhiana, National Dairy Research Institute at Karnal and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) at Varanasi amongst others bringing forth new perspectives on the issue. Presiding over the valedictory function, Dr Bisht informed about the university’s plan for training entrepreneurs and talked about the possible scientific interventions in the curricula to provide a launch pad for innovations. Teams from the BHU and Devi Ahilya Vishwa Vidyalya at Indore won the first and second team prizes, respectively. Vibhuti Bahuguna from GB Pant University, Pantnagar, won the first individual prize, while Ram Prakash Sharma of BHU and Hitesh Behrani of Devi Ahilya Vishwa Vidyalaya won second and third prizes, respectively. Goldi Tewari from Pantnagar was awarded a consolation prize. |

KV dedicates a day to grandparents
Dehradun, January 25 The staff and students of the institute welcomed the grandparents with ‘tilak’ and greeting cards. Participants at the function were excited to share their experiences with their grandparents. The
occasion was celebrated with merriment and fun. Govt must discourage privatisation: SFI
Dehradun, January 25 He further added that instead of supporting these profit-making institutes, the government should allocate a fixed amount for constructive development in the field of education. On February 21 and 22, the SFI members from the Uttarakhand chapter will participate at the education convention to be held in New Delhi to discuss important issues and problems faced by educationists nationwide. The members also spoke against the state government’s casual attitude towards privatisation. Furthermore, they asserted that for the BEd entrance test the criterion of 50 per cent should be revised so that large number of students can apply for the
examination. Present at the occasion were Prembhallab Sharma, Rajveer Singh, Pankaj Singh, Rajiv Lochan, Nitin and other prominent members of the SFI. |

Dehradun, January 25 The school compound was jam-packed with about 5,000 students and parents. Students presented cultural and musical performances on the occasion. Different competitions like essay-writing, speeches, brain-storming sessions and painting were organised from 11 am to 4 pm, while entertainment stalls and musical performances were held in the evening. PDG Shaju Peter was the chief guest, who appreciated the participation of the students as well as their parents in the noble cause. |

ONGC win golf tournament
Dehradun, January 25 SK Nandal, Vikram Malhotra, Dr Anil Raja Vijan, MR Locham and Dr AK Goyal having a scorecard of 46, 43, 40, 38 and 36 points, respectively, formed the
winning team. The IMA team with an aggregate score of 187 stable ford points finished runners-up. The IMA team golfers were Col AK Chandel (39 points), Col BS Siddhu (38 points), Maj Gen GS Bal (38 points), Maj S Chatterjee (37 points) and Maj Arun Gulati (35 points). VK Dandona, DIG, ITBP, with a scorecard of 47 points was the top scorer in the individual category followed by Dr Rakesh Shah (43 points) and Dr GS Rawat (40 points), while Dr Arun Kumar (37 points) was the best among the senior golfers. Dandona was given an award as a special recognition for his total support to the ONGC whenever required. The award for the longest drive was bagged by Col JS Tanwar (290 yards) followed by ONGC golfer SK Nandal (284 yards). Colonel Tanwar also won the closest to the pin award with a distance of 3’6”. Along with ONGC Cup, the OGA Cup tournament was also played concurrently. In the serving officers category, SK Nandal was the top scorer with an overall best card of 46 points, followed by Vikram Malhotra (43 points). In the retired officers category, PS Anand produced the best card with 38 points, followed by Dr D Dutta (35 points). Including the host ONGC, 93 golfers representing IMA, FRIMA, DSOI and OGA participated in
the tournament. The 10th ONGC Cup Golf Tournament was inaugurated by Lt Gen TPS Rawat (retd), a former Lok Sabha MP, Lt Gen RS Sujlana, Commandant, IMA. The prize distribution ceremony was held on the Tel Bhawan lawns where AK Hazarika, Director (onshore), Sundar Lal, GGM-Chief, ER & Head, Corp Admn, RC Gourh, former Director (Technical) and Sushant Vats, former ED-Chief, ER presented the awards at the prize distribution ceremony. The prize distribution ceremony was conducted by Dr Anil Raja Vijan, Chief Chemist and Executive Assistant to Chief Managing Director (CMD) of the ONGC. |
A shooter awaits licence to own a gun
Dehradun, January 25 “If the state helps me in getting a gun licence a bit early, it will be a great help to me. I can own a gun for myself, which I can use during a competition,” rued Viraj. He is using licenced guns of the ITBP for the international competitions. He applied for a gun licence in 2008, but due to the lax working of government departments, he still has not obtained it. Viraj is presently attending the national shooting camp in Pune. Being a promising shooter of the state, Viraj won many medals in the past two years time. He began shooting in the year 2002 at ITBP and won his first gold at the international event in the year 2008 at the South Asian Shooting Championship. He won one gold and a silver in .22 free pistol events. In the same year he again gave an outstanding performance at the championship held in Germany and won a gold, silver and a bronze at the event. Thereafter in the year 2009 he won a bronze at the competition held at Czech Republic. At the Commonwealth Games he will be participating in the .22 free pistol and .32 centre fire pistol competition, whereas in the world championship he will participate in .22 free pistol competiton. After internationally known shooter Jaspal Rana, who is also from Uttarakhand, Viraj is also looked upon as one who has great potential of making big at the international level. |

Vineet wins cross-country race
Dehradun January 25 Sub Area Commander VK Shiva flagged off the race from the Gandhi Park to Raj Bhawan. More than 120 students of schools, colleges, Sports Schools and the officials of the Police Department participated in the race. Vineet Saini stood first, Jagdeesh Mehar bagged the second position while Manpal Singh and Mahesh Yadav came third and fourth in the race, respectively. |

Unity Cup Cricket Tournament
Roorkee, January 25 Batting first, the Lava team made 208 runs in 25 overs. However, the Railways team gave up at 91 all out to concede defeat. Sachin of the winning team stole the highlight with his overall performance. He made 30 runs and claimed three for 14. For winners, Anil hit 39 runs in 25 balls, whereas Inderjit Singh scored 37 off 37. Ravi and Zeeshan snapped two wickets each. The Railways team started on a positive note, but soon the fall of five wickets at total of 41 changed the entire scenario of the match in favour of Lava XI. At one stage the score was 40 for 1, but suddenly the half of the team was back at 41 for 6. Anurag played a defiant knock of 20 off 20 while Zeeshan and Kuldeep Pawar chipped in 15 runs each. For Lava XI, Sachin took the maximum three wickets for 14 runs. Mohit showed his class by claiming two for just six runs. Sashikant too finished with the figure of two for 20. Sachin was declared man of the match. Tomorrow, Uttarakhand Police will take on Doon Tigers to move ahead
into semifinals of the tournament. |

But Manish helped the team to make a come back, he fought back and scored 59 runs off 78 balls, hitting six fours in his innings. Middle order batsman Vipul too played a useful knock of 19 runs off 27 balls, but could not stay for a long. After Vipul, it was Jaibir and Harish who contributed 13 and 12 runs respectively. For Little Master Cricket Club (LMCC) Rajeev and Abhay took two wickets each. In reply, the Doon Tiger team achieved the target with six wickets in hand. Shanky was the top scorer for the team with 76 runs off 43 balls, hitting nine fours and four sixes in his innings meanwhile Bharat made 28 runs.
