India-SL-b’desh
Mirpur, January 11 India first restricted the hosts to 247 for six and then chased down the target with seven overs to spare. Dinesh Karthik and Gautam Gambhir gave India another brisk 64-run start before Kohli took over to complete the formality in Suresh Raina’s company. Kohli’s unbeaten 95-ball 102 included 11 hits to the fence. Batting on 94, Kohli hit back-to-back fours off Shakib Al Hasan to reach his century and score the winning runs. Chasing a modest 248, India got just the kind of start they needed with Karthik and Gambhir finding boundaries at regular intervals. Karthik sent the first ball of the second powerplay - Abdur Razzak was the bowler - out of the park before perishing caught behind in the next over. As if to take revenge, Gambhir hit Shafiul for three fours on the trot in his next over before Naeem Islam breached his gate. Left-handed Gambhir danced down the track to hoist Naeem only to be beaten by the flight of the delivery that disturbed the stumps. Gambhir hit five fours in his 46-ball innings. Yuvraj Singh then came in and he was trying to give his partner Kohli more strike but he failed to fend off a Naeem delivery that straightened after pitching to be out LBW and India were in a spot of bother at 133 for three in the 24th over. The script looked like going the way of the earlier match between the two sides on January 7 when India lost the two openers and Yuvraj for Kohli and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to revive the run chase. Kohli carried on from where he left yesterday against Sri Lanka, mixing caution with aggression as he picked gaps and ran hard for the ones and twos and scoring occasional boundaries to race to his fifty in 47 balls with the help of five fours. Dhoni, who scored a hundred in their earlier match against the same opponents, played in the same fashion as his junior partner and as India scored at a brisk pace. But just as India were cruising to the target, Dhoni perished in the 37th over while trying for big shot by dancing down the track although he could only offer an easy catch to Imrul Kayes at mid-on off Shakib Al Hasan. The Indian captain, who hit three fours in his 35-ball 32, shared a 68-run stand for the fourth wicket from 75 balls with Kohli and when he was out India needed 47 runs from 13.5 overs.

Kings Xi Cup Chandigarh, January 11 In the first encounter, opener Sumit Dhiman’s sheet anchor innings of 44 saw the Reds romp home with a solitary delivery to spare. Greens won the toss and made 110 for the loss of nine wickets in their quota of overs. Choudhary made unbeatable 32 lower down the order. Reds started on a shaky note and were reeling at 28 for 3 at one stage. Sumit and Gurpreet batted sensibly and snatched win from the jaws of defeat. Dhiman got a life in the 19th over when he was dropped in the mid-wicket. In the second match, Silver won the toss and asked Yellow to bat first on a seemingly bowling friendly strip. Yellow lost Dewan in the first over but Sonkar and Sunny Sharma had an impressive stand of 67 runs before Sharma perished in the 13th over. Yellow managed 135 for 7 in the full quota of overs. In reply, skipper Tanmay led from front with his well accumulated 61 to see Silver tide over a sudden collapse in the middle overs. At one stage they had just 73 on the board with half their side cooling their heels in the hut. Brief Scores: Green 110 for 9 in 20
overs, Red 112 for 4 in 19.5 overs. Yellow 135 for 7 in 20 overs, Silver 136 for 5 in 18.4 overs. |
Hockey Punjab gets affiliation New Delhi, January 11 The Hockey India elections were earlier fixed for January 29, but since the affiliated units needed to be given a 21-day notice, the elections have now been rescheduled for February 7. Hockey Punjab secretary-general Pargat Singh was a very relieved man. “We are very happy that Hockey Punjab has been given affiliation to HI. We were asked to give some clarifications and we submitted them. HI was satisfied with our clarifications and granted us affiliation”, said Pargat. But Madhya Pradesh’s case has
been kept pending as the State unit has not yet got all its six bodies merged to form a single unit while Kerala was not granted affiliation due to a court case. Hockey India presidnet A.K.Mattoo announced the election date and affiliation for the new members after a lengthy meeting of HI officials with International Hockey Federation (FIH) observer Antonio Von Ondarza, and Ministry of Sports appointed election observer S.K.Mendiratta here today. “We were forced to shift the election date because of the dealy in giving the 21-day notice period (to the affiliate members). Moreover, Government observer S.K.Mendiratta will not be in town from February 2 to 6”, explained Mattoo, for fixing February 7 as the election date. The meeting of the HI officials with the FIH and Government observers covered the Government directive for the election process. “We have made substantial
progress today. The documentation for the election is ready for the FIH and
Government observers to study”, said Matoo. He said the meeting analysed the Government letter in which “they have laid down some procedures to be followed during the elections”, which got the nod of Ondarza as well. “I am very pleased with the meeting. We have made a big advance as far as the Hockey India elections are concerned. The FIH is very happy to know that at least we have come to a solution”, Ondarza added. |
CGF’s thumbs up to Games security
New Delhi, January 11 Reacting to reports doubting capital’s security plans, CGF president Michael Fennell said in a statement that all those concerns were “ill informed” and security planning for the Games was firmly on track. “The CGF regards the safety and security of the Games, for athletes and spectators alike, as being of paramount importance and of the highest priority,” Fennell said. He said the CGF had full trust in its security advisor Intelligent Risks Pty Ltd (IR), which has vast Commonwealth, Olympic and multi-sport games experience. “A number of recent media reports on Games’ security come from comments by those who have not worked on any aspect of security planning for the Delhi 2010 Games, and do not have any serious knowledge of the detailed plans across all aspects being put in place by local authorities.” “In contrast, IR is deeply involved with all levels of the security plan, and its analysis is being undertaken by operatives with senior command or managerial experience in international major events,” Fennall said. “We value their considered and informed view, which is, that the Indian authorities are working well, with appropriate resources being provided,” Fennell said. Fennell said both the Organising Committee and Delhi Police had put in place a mechanism and also pointed out that Home Minister P Chidambaram had established the International Security Liaison Group within his portfolio to ensure appropriate international cooperation on security for the Games. “The Ministry and OC have advised there will be a second Games International Security Conference around June 2010 to keep all nations informed, and importantly, involved,” Fennell said, adding the next comprehensive CGF security adviser’s review is scheduled to take place in late February and early March.

Messi hat-trick sends Barca top
Madrid, January 11 “It was complicated for us at the beginning but we scored some quick goals and that changed things,” said Messi. “I am delighted with my three goals and more importantly the team won, however, it is a bit unfair on Tenerife.” Real Madrid had leapfrogged Barca with a 2-0 home win over Real Mallorca earlier on Sunday but Pep Guardiola's side responded to move back to the summit two points ahead of Real. Barcelona’s next challenge is at Sevilla in the second leg of the last 16 Kings Cup tie in which they trail 2-1 from the first leg. Madrid had moved top of the Spanish league for the first time since the end of November with goals from Esteban Granero and Gonzalo Higuain overcoming Mallorca as they maintained their flawless home record with a ninth consecutive win. However, Real’s stay at the top was brief as Barca recovered from a shaky start to put Tenerife to the sword with Messi so inspirational that even the home Tenerife fans were applauding him at the end. Carles Puyol was also on target with an Ezequiel Luna own goal completing the scoring after great footwork from Pedro Rodriguez. It was tough on Tenerife who lost 6-0 the last time they hosted Barcelona in the top-flight back in 2001. Tenerife’s Alejandro Alfaro could have had a hat-trick in the opening quarter hour hitting the crossbar and forcing Victor Valdes into action. Barca had been quiet but Bojan Krkic ghosted past his man in the 36th minute and cut back for Messi to score. Tenerife were aggrieved and it got worse for them as Barca scored twice in two minutes. A minute before the break Messi curled in a devilish free-kick and Puyol used the pace of the ball to glance in a header. On the chime of half-time Andres Iniesta’s sublime pass released the effective Bojan who set up a tap-in for Messi and a 3-0 lead they didn’t deserve.
