Mirpur, January 7 Dhoni not only notnched up his seventh ODI century but paced his innings brilliantly to share a 152-run fourth wicket stand with Kohli to put India on course of the victory. Dhoni, who was let off on 61 and struck nine fours in his 107-ball knock, got admirable support from young Kohli, who hit seven fours during his 102-ball knock. India, however, were dealt with some early blows by the Bangladeshi bowlers as openers Gautam Gambhir (18), Virender Sehwag (1) and Yuvraj Singh (1) all feel cheaply inside the first nine overs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Suresh Raina, who hit five fours and a six during his unbeaten knock, hit the winning runs, a boundary, to take India to 297 for four to the stunned silence of 25,000-odd Bangladesh supporters. Young Kohli, who hit his fourth ODI fifty in his 17th match, was unlucky to miss out on his second hundred by nine runs as he was caught and bowled by Bangladesh captain Sakib al Hasan in the 35th over. For Bangladesh, Sayed Rasel, Rubel Hossain and Sakib took one wicket apiece. Earlier, Bangladesh posted the competitive target, their highest one-day score against India, riding on opener Imrul Kayes’ 70 and identical quickfire 60s from Tamim Iqbal and Mahamadullah after their captain Sakib al Hasan won the toss and surprsisingly elected to bat. With this win, India recorded their first victory of the tournament as well of the year and are in second spot behind Sri Lanka in the points after all the three sides have played two matches each. Dhoni’s men now play Sri Lanka, to whom they lost their opening match on Tuesday, on Sunday, while Bangladesh, who are still to open their account, play Sri Lanka tomorrow in a must-win match. Matches advanced by half an hour
In a bid to minimise the dew factor as suggested by Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara, the Bangladesh Cricket Board today said remaining four matches of the ongoing tri-series will start half an hour earlier at 1330 hrs IST. BCB media committee chairman Younus Jalal said NEO channel, Bangladesh TV and Super Sport have agreed to advance the start time.

Want to beat Schumacher: Sutil
New Delhi, January 7 Sutil welcomed the seven-time world champion’s return to Formula One grid with Mercedes and felt it would be a great incentive for all other drivers to compete against, and possibly outrace, the German legend. “Michael’s return is a great news for motorsports, us and Michael himself,” Sutil said here. “He is a genius, a hero of motorsports we all admire. So it’s nice to have him back. But at the same time, it’s every driver’s dream to beat him once and prove that they are better than him! He is a hero for me as well. But at the end of the day, you have to fight for your position and doesn’t matter who’s hero and who’s driving. You want to be in the front, at any cost. How it happens, at whose cost, doesn't matter,” said the lanky German, who scored his maiden points for Force India in the Italian Grand Prix where he came fourth. Schumacher, a Ferrari advisor post-retirement, was tipped for a comeback last year as Felipe Massa’s replacement but neck injuries came in the way. Much to the delight of his fans, the 41-year-old German announced his comeback last month with Mercedes even though Formula One pundits are unsure if he would be able to reach the dizzy heights of his Ferrari days. Sutil, meanwhile, warned fellow drivers not to underestimate Schumacher, saying the F1 veteran would not have staged a comeback if he had any self-doubts. “I would say that he probably feels that he can be very competitive, otherwise he would not have done it,” Sutil said. “He is so professional and knows better than anyone what it takes to become the world champion. And he thinks for himself. If he had doubts that he probably cannot make it anymore, Michael would not have come out of retirement. He would have stayed out of Formula One. The guy is sure that he still fast enough,” Sutil said. “That is what I feel. I really feel that he can be a strong competitor again and he would do whatever it takes to be back in the front and lead every race. Formula One would be quite exciting this year, for sure,” he added. — PTI |

New Delhi, January 7 “The stadium would be ready. Even if it is not ready completely, the part that we need, which is the arena and the lounge area for boxers and officials, would be ready,” Indian Boxing Federation secretary general P K Muralidharan Raja told reporters here today. The championships were postponed last year due to the non-completion of the construction work at the venue. India, which won a gold, two silver and six bronze medals in the fifth edition, will host boxers from England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Mauritius, kenya, Samoa and Singapore. The IBF is still awaiting confirmation from Canada while Australia has turned down the invitation citing previous commitments. “Australia regretted not being able to participate due to prior commitments and didn’t specify anything else. We are awaiting confirmation from Canada and hopefully it will come soon,” Raja said. “All the remaining top Commonwealth nations are coming. So, we expect a tough competition,” he added. The event will be the first to feature boxers in the new weight categories announced last year. The AIBA reshuffled the divisions to abolish featherweight (57kg) and increase the bantam weight from 54kg to 56kg. 2005 Commonwealth Championship and the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Akhil Kumar, also an Olympian, said India can look forward to best-ever results in the event this time. “The team has not yet been selected but I can tell you, the results are going to be excellent. All the boxers have trained very hard and we will get a good haul of medals,” he said. The Indian team for the event would be selected on the basis of the boxers’ performance in this month's Super Cup and the trials to be held a couple of weeks ahead of the Championships. “The Super Cup would allow us to identify upcoming names and during the trials, those who do not participate in Super Cup will get their chance to prove their worth,” Raja said. — PTI |
