T20: Sirsa register win
: In the IFFCO Cup Twenty-20 National Cricket tournament Sirsa team won the Pool-B match by four wickets at the Nehru Stadium here on Thursday. Bowler Ashwani Khairwa declared man of the match. In another match, Baba Moti Ram Sports Club, Mangwal (Sangrur) defeated the mighty Punjab State 20-20 Association team by 34 runs. Sukhwinder was adjudged man of the match.

Filing of nomination papers for panchayat polls begins: With the filing of nomination papers for the Zila Parishad and Panchayat elections in Hanumangarh and Sriganganagar districts beginning on Thursday, the Congress observer, Jugal Kabra, have visibly succeeded in bringing heads of the different factions to a common platform. While the BJP high command has yet to initiate move to end factionalism that had resulted in removal of Bahadur Chand Narang as district president without completing the process of organisational elections at the grass-root level.

Cash looted
: Four car-borne persons allegedly snatched a bag containing Rs 2.40 lakh from two employees of a petrol station here on Thursday. The victim, Mehar Singh, said he had been working with the petrol station in Banwala village, 7 km from Fazilka, for many years. He said when he, along with another employee, was going to a bank to deposit the cash belonging to the petrol station, a Tata Indica allegedly hit their motorcycle near Truck Union here following which they fell down. He alleged that four persons came out of the car and snatched the bag from them at gunpoint. The police said teams of officials had been sent to different directions to locate the alleged dacoits.

CBI probe sought
: District Congress Committee chief and MLA from Sardulgarh, Ajit Inder Singh Moffar, alleged that misappropriation had taken place in the construction work of roads in Mansa under the Pardhan Mantri Gramin Sake Yojna. Talking to media here on Thursday, he said funds of crores were received for upgradation of three roads under above scheme but the funds were misused by the officials concerned. He had demanded a CBI inquiry by writing a letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Medical council chief gets extension
: Renowned cardiologist from Patiala Dr Manmohan Singh has been given another extension of three years for the third time as the president of the Punjab Medical Council. Taking over his new assignment, Dr Manmohan Singh said generating public awareness against social evils would be among the top priorities of the council. Meanwhile, Dr AS Sekhon, Dean, Gian Sagar Group of Institutions, has hailed the state government’s decision to grant extension to Dr Manmohan Singh.

Girl abducted: A teenaged girl (16) was allegedly abducted by a youth identified as Monu from Qutubpur Colony here on Monday. The incident took place when the girl had gone to the colony’s market. The girl’s father - Mohan Lal - filed a complaint on Wednesday, following which the Rampura police registered a case of abduction and criminal conspiracy against Monu, a resident of Saraswati Vihar Colony here.

Farmer drowned
: Besides disruptions in rail and road traffic, thick fog and poor visibility claimed the life of a farmer of Mehmudpur village on Wednesday. The farmer identified as Satpal got drowned after his car fell into the village pond on Wednesday night. The incident took place when he was on the way to his village from Gohana. After receiving information, villagers rushed to the spot and took out the car from the pond. However, Sat Pal could not be saved. In another incident, Dilbag of Asawarpur village fell into a deep ditch near the village on Wednesday night and an iron rod pierced through his thigh.
