Ferozepur shines in citrus show
Raj Sadosh

Abohar, January 7
Even when the Ferozepur district has again won the overall trophy in the state-level Citrus Show held at Hoshiarpur yesterday, the state government had not come to the expectations of the fruit growers said a cross section of the progressive farmers with whom this correspondent interacted today.

The district has won 45 prizes including 30 first positions and fruit growers of Abohar and neighboring villages of Fazilka have got a Lion's share in it. The fruits displayed at the citrus show by Baljit Kumar of village Maujgarh were adjudged as best, while Gurlal Singh of village Danewala and his wife Simarjit Kaur were awarded first prize in Kinnow and Citrus fruit respectively.

Jasbir Singh of the same village was honoured for highest fruit yield that was recorded at 132.25 metric tones. Folk singer Krishan Shaunki's wife Paramjit Kamboj and daughter Manrishi Kamboj have won first prize in preparing lemon and orange squash respectively while Kulwinder Singh topped in lemon pickles and Lovpreet in ready to serve squash. Sunil Periwal's family that has developed orchards at village Khippanwali of Fazilka sub division has maintained lead in producing Mussami, Jafa, Red blood citrus and Grape fruits.

Surprisingly the growers have achieved the distinctions even when 20 out of 21 posts in the Horticulture department in the district were lying vacant. The district headquarter has got only an assistant director who holds the additional charge of Abohar. The state government has been able to recruit adhoc staff on contract basis recently after revising the salary. Now the horticulture development officer will be getting Rs 18,000 whereas the horticulture technical assistant is to be paid Rs 12,000per month.

Under the Horticulture Mission, funded by the Central government, the state had set up five Citrus estate complexes with a cost of Rs one crore each, one of them is located at Abohar, another at village Tahliwala Jattan. But these had virtually proved to be white elephants says progressive farmer Dr G S Chauhan former Director of the PAU Regional Station.

The Mission had asked the state govt to offer substantial subsidy for expansion of the orchards but the growers who had applied for the same last year were now being released the money.

Former SDM Bhupinder Singh Saharan, another progressive farmer, says the contractual staff has no work in hand and for months together files for second installment of the subsidy were not accepted even. No expert was available at the estate complex to offer guidance to fruit growers.

SAD circle president Sukhwinder Singh says, “I visited the complex and kept standing for half an hour as the staff did not offer a chair to sit in, what to talk of giving any guidance."

Legislator Sunil Jakhar said the finance minister had announced during the budget session of Punjab Vidhan Sabha that each estate would be given Rs 2 crore for setting up labs and other infrastructure but the farmers learn during the visit to the citrus estate that no testing facility had so far been made available. Only plastic crates were being supplied on subsidy for transporting fruits.

Most of the staff members were found enjoying sun shine when this correspondent visited the complex today; they were not inclined to share any information.
