Bathinda
Body found:
Volunteers of the Sahara Jan Seva found the body of a man, about 50 years of age, floating in the Sirhind Canal here on Wednesday. After conducting a post-mortem examination, the police initiated the inquest proceedings. As the deceased could not be identified, the volunteers cremated the body.

Youth run over by train: A youth, identified as Vishnu and belonging to Nepal, was crushed under a train on the Bathinda-Dabwali track near Dabwali outer on Tuesday night. He worked as a waiter at a hotel in Dabwali. Receiving the information, volunteers of a social NGO, took him to the local Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The GRP staff has initiated the inquest proceedings. 

Woollens distributed: The Bathinda Vikas Manch distributed woollens among 70 students of the Government Senior Secondary School and 20 elders of Haraipur village near here on Wednesday.

AIDS awareness: AIDS awareness sessions were organised at Government Des Raj School, the ITI and Government Senior Secondary School, Balluana, here on Wednesday, where community AIDS educator Narinder Kumar Bassi was the key speaker. 

Vardhman Aao Bune’  contest held: Over 400 students from 30 schools participated in “Vardhman Aao Bune”, an on-the-spot contest, held here on Wednesday. During the contest, which stretched for two hours, the students knitted patterns, booties, caps and miniatures of purses and bags with colourful yarn provided by the Vardhman Textiles Limited. Ten best patterns from each category have been short-listed for final evaluation phase. State-level final winners will be decided in Ludhiana by a panel of judges in December and the announcement of the same will be made in January.

Vidhan Sabha session
: The 13th Punjab Vidhan Sabha session has been summoned by the Governor to meet for its eighth session on Monday in the hall of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. This was disclosed here on Wednesday by Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon. 

Kharar
Office inaugurated: The Child Development Project Office was inaugurated near the BDPO complex, the Civil Hospital road, today. Darshan Kaur Shergill has been appointed as the child development project officer. She asked her subordinates to implement the Central and state schemes for child and women development. District programme official Ajit Kaur Multani said opening of the second office would accelerate work pace as well as would benefit the people around. 

Ludhiana
Award for PAU:
Punjab Agricultural University has been awarded the IPI-FAI Award for promoting balanced and integrated fertiliser use with emphasis on potassium by the Fertilizer Association of India (FAI) for the year 2009. The award has been jointly given to PAU and the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hassan. This information has been conveyed by Satish Chander, Director- General, Fertilizer Association of India, in a communication to Dr Manjit Singh Kang, vice-chancellor of PAU. The award ceremony will take place in Hyderabad tomorrow. The FAI is also organising a three-day annual seminar from December 3 to 5 and has invited the vice-chancellor.

Blood donation camp:
To mark the World AIDS Day, the Indian Red Cross Society in association with Big Baazar organised a blood donation camp at Big Baazar Complex here yesterday. Brijendra Singh, IAS, was the chief guest on the occasion. About 53 units of blood were donated.

Air Force School, Jammu, celebrated its exhibition-cum-annual day function onTuesday in which Group Captain Ghar Singh,Station Commander of the Air force station, Jammu, who is also the chairman of the school management committee was the chief guest.Principal of the school presented the annual report. 

Srinagar
School vacation from Dec 14: According to the Secretary, Education Department, all educational institutions, including recognised private schools up to the higher secondary level of Kashmir division (excluding Ladakh) and also those falling in the winter zone of Jammu division would observe winter vacation from December 14 to February, 2010. These shall reopen on March 1.
