Amandeep murder
Jammu, November 27 “It is yet to be ascertained whether the weapon recovered was the weapon that the main accused used to commit the crime,” Farooq Khan, DIG, Jammu-Kathua range, and SIT in charge, told The Tribune. The SIT team led by SP Mubasir Latifi in the presence of a magistrate recovered the ‘weapon’, a country-made pistol (katta), from the area. It was sealed later and would be opened in front of another magistrate and witnesses so as to ascertain whether it was the actual weapon of offence, he added. The process would be conducted within a day or two, said the DIG. The weapon used by Jatinder Singh, alias Raja, to murder Amandeep Singh, son of former NC legislator Deepinder Kour, was recovered around 11 pm yesterday, said official sources. They said Jatinder’s father Nagar Singh broke down before the SIT and identified the place where he had dumped the weapon. It may be stated here that the original weapon was replaced with a rusted weapon in Gandhi Nagar police station in connivance with some police officers, including former Jammu SSP Manohar Singh. Nagar Singh had allegedly paid huge bribes to disgruntled police and FSL officers to replace the weapon so as to save his son. The sources said during interrogation Nagar Singh confessed that he had taken the original weapon from the police and threw it in bushes along the Narwal bypass. On September 25, the DIG had admitted before mediapersons that huge money running into crores of rupees had exchanged hands in the murder case. |

Water crisis in Jammu West Assembly
Jammu, November 27 The erratic supply of water during the past five days in Jammu West Assembly had been giving a tough time to people, said Sunil Dimple, president of the Jammu West Assembly Movement. “What added to the woes of the residents was supply of contaminated water through taps in some of the localities,” he added. The situation had already become serious in New Plots, Sarwal, Upper Lakshmi Nagar, Lower Lakshmi Nagar, Ban Talab, Paloura, Durga Nagar, Chinore, Bakshi Nagar, Janipur, Roop Nagar, Rehari and Subhash Nagar, Dimple said. He reminded the PHE Minister of his promise of supply of water twice a day in the winter capital. Considering ever-growing population in Jammu, the government should augment water supply immediately by diverting the Chenab water to Jammu as the Tawi, the main source of water for the city, is drying up rapidly, Dimple said. Official sources said with a population of 13 lakh, Jammu city needed 37 lakh gallons of water everyday and the demand continued to rise. The PHE Minister attributed the present crisis to power failure and said “we have already taken up the matter with the Power Development Department (PDD) and the situation has improved to a large extent.” “Our pumping station at Sitlee Filtration Plant was left redundant following power failure, but after we took up the matter with the PDD the scenario improved ”, said Taj. The process of lifting water from the Tawi was affected and the main reservoir had to start afresh, he said, adding that it takes time to resume normal supplies. But he straightaway denied that contaminated water was being supplied saying water supplied from the Sitlee Filtration Plant at Nagrota was filtered and treated properly as per norms. |

Essential Commodities
Jammu, November 27 In a statement issued here, the CCI said the government decision would adversely affect the supply line of essential commodities. All these items were brought from places like Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. “The limit on stocks will affect the price line of these commodities adversely. It will cause a shortage of supply of these essential commodities to various parts of the state. The notified stock limit of pulses of 200 quintals is meagre, while 150 to 200 truckloads of these items are traded in Jammu everyday,” CCI president YV Sharma said. |

‘Stranded in –20°C, we could see death coming’ Srinagar, November 27 “I drove taxi during the peak of militancy and escaped gunfights and questioning by militants as well as the Army. Those were bad days, but I knew I could carry on as I had nothing to hide. But on Wednesday night, I felt completely helpless and it appeared that death was nearing,” the 55-year-old driver said. Shafi was among around 400 persons who were left stranded near Zojila after a truck broke down on this narrow and treacherous section of the highway, leaving them completely helpless amid minus 20°C temperature and falling snow. “Two women passengers were crying and men were mostly very gloomy,” he said. The stretch of road where his vehicle with many others was stranded is particularly dangerous and several hundred-feet deep gorge below has claimed uncounted number of lives so far. The latest accident resulted in the death of 11 persons, including 10 Gujarati tourists, when their vehicle skidded down the deep gorge. The sudden fall of snow often jams traffic on the Srinagar-Leh highway during early winter, but most of times local drivers manage to stop at a convenient place. So many people getting stranded in such precarious circumstances is rare and Shafi blames it on drivers, who are always willing to take risk to earn money, as well as administration that this year gave precedence to political expedience to people’s safety. The administration continued deferring banning traffic on the highway even as people kept getting stranded and could be rescued only with high-cost efforts of civil as well security forces’ administration. Transport Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon, who is from Kargil, had insisted that the road remain open so long as weather permitted. However, the abrupt change in weather proved him wrong. “It was so painful for all of us, but we survived. I saw everybody from Beacon (which has the responsibility of maintaining road) to the district administration and Army jawans wading through snow to help rescue us. Had it snowed more heavily, even they could not have saved us,” Shafi said. |

Acute power shortage in Leh Leh, November 27 Forcing people to use electricity only for lighting purpose, the Power Development Department (PDD) is also restricting them from using more than three CFL bulbs. The use and sale of other heavy electrical gadgets like heaters and boilers etc., has also been banned. But Tsering Paljor, Assistant Executive Engineer, PDD, said the ban could not succeed as electrical gadgets were openly selling in the market, though the sale of heaters and boilers had been banned for the last five years. To enforce the ban on the sale of heavy electrical gadgets as well as ensure electricity was used for lighting purpose only, the PDD constituted three teams comprising the Assistant Executive Engineer and the Assistant Engineer and linemen in Leh town to check the misuse of power. People are also facing one night scheduled power cut in five days forcing people to have dinner in candlelight and sleep early. Paljor said, “Due to the shutdown of the Igoo Martselang Power Project and the Stakna Power House for winter, we are forced to supply power only in the evening as it was generated from diesel generators. Power supplied to consumers is heavily subsidised.” He added that the diesel generators produced 6-5 MW, which was far less than the present demand for power and forcing the department to curtail the supply to two to three localities per night. With sunset, life in Leh town comes to a standstill. In the absence of streetlights in almost entire Leh town, people in fear of dog bite tend not to go for shopping late in the evening. Deachan Angmo, a shopkeeper in Leh own, lamented “even important public places in Leh town like bus and taxi stands and the Sonam Nurboo Memorial Hospital do not have streetlights.” |
