Develop Gajender’s village, say kin
Dehradun November 25 Gajender Singh Bisht, was among one of the NSG Commandos, who lost his life while battling against terrorists in Mumbai attack last year. But today after a gap of one year, tears have still moistened the eyes of the Bisht family who sacrificed his son for the country. He was from Ganeshpur village on Shimla bypass, which is about 30 kms away from Dehradun city. “Government promised to provide us with several help but during this one year no organisation or ministers have come to renders us with assistance,” said Rajender Singh Bisht, elder brother of the martyr. “He was a national hero but his heroism and valour went unsung. Neither central government nor the state government has taken the initiative to offer helping hand to his mother till date,” he added. “The village still mourns on the death of our son. We don’t expect any ex-gratia amount to be disbursed to us, but we request government to do something for the development of our village,” said Aruna Negi, Gajender’s aunt. “We don’t want any monetary help or compensation from government but we request them to start a gas agency by his name or build a school by his name or change the name of the village to Gajenderpur,” she added. Bisht family is basically from Orkund, Garhwal and 72-years-old Shivdevi, mother of the martyr, has been invited by Social Welfare Minister, Matbar Singh Kandari to their native place for the inauguration of gate made in the honour and memory of her late son. |

Central Secy visits sites
SMA Kazmi Tribune News Service
Dehra Dun, November 25 He was accompanied by Uttarakhand Principal Secretary (Energy) Shatrughan Singh and state power adviser Yogendra Prasad to the project sites on the Bhagirathi and also held talks with a cross-section of people to take their views. Union Secretary for Environment and Forests Vijay Sharma also held an open public hearing in Uttarkashi on the three suspended projects on Tuesday. The visit came in the wake of the October 5 meeting of the Ganga River Basin Authority (GRBA) presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi. The GRBA is yet to decide on the fate of NTPC’s 600 MW Pala Maneri and two other projects. After visiting the dam site of NTPC’s 600 MW Lohari Nagpala and other suspended projects, Brahma said he would prepare a report and submit it to the GRBA but did not comment on the likely resumption of these projects. The final decision on these projects would be taken by the GRBA, he said. These projects were put on hold by the Uttarakhand government following protests by Hindu groups led by noted environmentalist Prof GD Aggarwal, who started a fast unto death on the issue in June, 2008. The Hindu groups alleged that those projects would vitiate the sanctity of the holy Ganga revered by the Hindus. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has so far remained non-committal over the suspended projects, saying that the sanctity of the Ganga should be maintained at all cost. However, Yogendra Prasad said all three projects should be revived to meet the growing power needs of the country as well as Uttarakhand. While NTPC’s Lohari Nagpala project, which is being built in Uttarkashi district with an investment of Rs 2,500-3,000 crore, is at a very advanced stage, the state-run Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJVNL) had also done considerable work on Pala Maneri and Bhaironghati. The NTPC had invested Rs 550 crore in the Lohari Nagpala project and the UJVNL Rs 100 crore in the Pala Maneri project. |

No Mohaan cattle fair this year
Nainital, November 25 This was done following indictment of the contractor organising the fair on the charges of various irregularities. The contractor has been blacklisted. Animal rights groups, including Maneka Gandhi-led People for Animals, had also lodged protests against the manner in which animals were being handled at the fair. Senior Congress leader Dhirendra Pratap, who had been countering the campaign launched by various Hindutva outfits seeking a closure of the fair on the grounds that it was providing bovine animals for slaughter, has cried foul over the move of the administration. “I talked to Chief Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank at Uttarakhand stall at the ongoing India International Trade Fair at New Delhi and have lodged my protest in the matter. “He has promised to look into the matter. The government does not have to bow down to every pressure that is coming from the likes of Maneka Gandhi,” Pratap told The Tribune. He added, ”Even I had my reservations against the manner in which the contractor had been functioning. But ideally, the government should have replaced him with an official instead of just shutting down the fair.” He said that the closure of the fair two months before the scheduled time is going to cause a lot of hardships to the farmers who had come from as far as 400 km away to purchase cattle. “I demand that the farmers who are incurring a loss should be compensated by the government,” he said . The contract for organising the fair from 2007 to 2010 was a mere Rs 3.57 lakh. According to reports, the addresses of some farmers, who had purchased cattle heads at the fair, were found to be fake. The contractor was found to be fleecing farmers selling and purchasing cattle heads. He was charging Rs 50 to Rs 100 as entry fee to the fair from the farmers who wanted to sell or purchase cattle heads whereas the entry fee fixed before the fair was only Rs 10. |
