Abohar
Book fair: A book fair was inaugurated at the DAV College auditorium on Wednesday by the former Rotary Club president Dev Mittar Ahuja. Principal Dr BB Sharma said reading plays an important role in life. There were no e-books before as it is available now, he said. Convener Shashi Sharma informed that leading publishers from New Delhi, Amritsar and Jalandhar had been invited to put the best of their titles on display during the three-day fair. Dr Venita Singh, principal of the DAV College of Education, was happy to find that books on body language too were on display. Soon a seminar would be organised on the subject, she informed.

Essay competition: Dipanshu, Bhim Sain and Mohinder Kumar were declared winners in the essay competition that was organised during a seminar on Wednesday at the Government Senior Secondary School here, principal Madhu Mehta informed. Dr Tarsem Sharma from DAV College was the chief guest on the occasion.

Meeting held: Concerned over the increasing trend of defacing the religious complexes, the Abohar unit of Sanatan Dharam Mahabir Dal has during a meeting resolved that none would be permitted to display banners or fix hoardings at Shivpuri (cremation ground) or ancient Johri Mandir here. The meeting was presided over by the new president Mahabir Singla.

BKU activists stage dharna: While responding to a state-wide call, the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Krantikari) organised a dharna here on Wednesday. They submitted a memorandum through the sub-divisional magistrate expressing anguish over the delay against the SGPC task force for allegedly killing farmers in village Khanna-Chamara in the recent past. The BKU demanded that the SGPC president and other senior functionaries should also be booked by the police. Those who had actually been cultivating the lands owned by the SGPC and other such organisations should be given ownership rights, they said.

PCCTU to hold rally on Nov 27: The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) will organise rallies against the state government on November 27 at all the districts. However, Ferozepur being a big district, there will be a separate rally at Abohar also besides Ferozepur, informed PCCTU president, Iqbal Singh Sandhu. All the members of the union will join the protest march after taking two periods in the morning.

Taekwondo championship
: Students of Delhi International School bagged 16 medals, including seven gold, two silver and seven bronze, in Second Baba Farid Memorial Taekwondo Championship (U-14) held at Guru Tegh Bahadur Public School, Mehmuana, district Faridkot. Vice-chairman of the school Ashish Tola and vice-principal Navneet Thakur congratulated the students on their splendid performance.

Jasbir is PPCC secy: Jasbir Singh has been appointed as the secretary of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee by president of the committee Mohinder Singh Kaypee. This was informed to Jasbir on Monday, through a letter written by general secretary of the PPCC Tarlochan Singh.

Progress of Talwandi Sabo power project reviewed: Suresh Kumar, principal secretary (power and irrigation), Anurag Agrawal, member (P&A), PSEB, GC Sabbharwal, member (transmission), PSEB, and Kumar Rahul, deputy commissioner of Mansa, visited the Talwandi Sabo Power Limited at village Banawala to review the progress of the 1980-MW coal-based thermal power project on Wednesday. BK Sharma from the power plant presented an update on the implementation status of the project and informed that over Rs 1000 crore has already been spent on the construction of the plant. He also requested for support from the government to fight the constraints being faced by the plant. A request for providing a dedicated coal block was made for the project.

Checking child labour: Following the instructions of district and sessions judge Kuldeep Singh, the District Legal Services Authority along with the Women and Child Protection on Wednesday conducted a survey of areas near Mini-secretariat, court complex and tehsil complex to find out children below 14 years working with tea vendors or persons selling food on roadsides. The team disengaged the services of children and warned their parents and the vendors against putting them back on job again. In case they did not comply with the instructions, a legal action would be taken against them.

Accused flees from custody
: An accused in the police custody, brought to the local civil hospital for medical examination, managed to escape from the police guards, escorting him in broad daylight here today. According to the details available and eye-witness account, Sultan Singh, a resident of the border village Pakka Chisti had been arrested by the Sadar Police, Fazilka, in connection with a criminal case under section 323,324,326 and 31 of the IPC against him for assaulting Kashmira Bai and Saroj of the same village on October 16, 2009. According to the SHO Sadar Bachan Singh, police have started raiding different places to nab the accused Sultan Singh. By the time of filling of the news , no action was taken against the police officials concerned.

Camp held for farmers
: Agriculture department, Mansa, on Wednesday held a camp at Maujo village in Bhikhi Block under the Atma scheme. Dr Jagtar Singh Brar, agriculture officer, presided over the camp and provided the farmers with valuable information. Along with the agriculture experts, in-charge of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mansa, Dr Ramana and his team also participated in the camp. Dr Jagtar Singh Brar said during the camp that technical information was being given to the farmers through the camps under the Atma scheme. Exhibitions regarding all the crops would be organised in the district.

Additional media advisor
: The Haryana government has appointed Sunil Parti and Kewal Dhingra as additional media advisor to the Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda with immediate effect. Parti, who remained additional advocate general for nearly two years in the previous term of the government, is a close aide of former minister and Ambala MLA Venod Sharma, a confidante of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The Haryana government had only recently appointed Sunder Pal as media advisor.

Kanda bereaved: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Wednesday expressed grief over the demise of Munni Devi (62), maternal aunt of Gopal Kanda, Minister of State for Home. In a condolence message, Hooda said Munni Devi was a kind hearted and religious lady. She worked for the welfare of poor throughout her life. Munni Devi is survived by three daughters and two sons.

Girl kidnapped
: A teenaged girl was allegedly kidnapped by a youth, Babu Yadav, a resident of Harjipur village, from Naiwali Chowk here on November 21. The incident took place when Bhoop Singh along with his daughter had come here for shopping. Sources said Babu Yadav, who frequently visited his married sister’s house at Aram Nagar village, developed intimacy with the girl following which the duo eloped on Saturday. On a complaint filed on Tuesday, the police has registered a case of abduction coupled with seduction against Babu Yadav.

Kaithal college wins quiz
: The RKSD College of Kaithal won the first prize in the state-level literary quiz held at Hindu Girls College, Jagadhri, on Tuesday. The second and third position was secured by the students of Hindu Girls College. The quiz was organised by the post-graduate department of English of the college. As many as 18 colleges from different states of the northern region took part in the event.

Hover rafting launched
: Tourism and Culture Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora on Monday said the government would introduce new activities to fully tap the state’s tourist potential. He said after the upcoming golf courses, all three regions of Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir might soon offer hover rafting to attract tourists. Jora was hover rafting on the Tawi here after the launch of the sport. Magnus Hover Craft Adventures Tour and Travels managing director Rajeev Kotwal told the minister that it was for the first time in India that the hover craft was being used for recreation.

Rehris impounded: Intensifying the ongoing drive against unauthorised constructions, the enforcement wing of the Municipal Corporation (MC) on Monday inspected various parts of the city and impounded 10 rehris plying without licences. Two teams comprising the joint commissioner (A), the chief enforcement officer,the chief revenue officer and other field staff inspected the areas of Paloura, Muthi, Barnal, Roop Nagar, Bantalab, Rail Head Complex, BR Ambedkar Chowk and the Railway Station road and reviewed the construction works going on in these areas. The builders were asked to seek proper permission before initiating construction work.

Ghazal ‘form of art’: “Ghazal is a continuous process of depiction of contemporary socio-cultural values. It is an important genre of the Urdu language popularised throughout the world,” said critic Qudoos Javid, while delivering a lecture on the ‘Art of Urdu Ghazal’ on Monday. Organised by the Department of Urdu at Jammu University, the talk was part of a lecture series started by the department for the benefit of students and scholars. The programme was presided over by noted Urdu poet Vida Ratan Asi, while Dean, Faculty of Arts, and well-known Dogri writer Prof Veena Gupta was the chief guest. Known poet Pritpal Singh Betab was the guest of honour.

Protest held: Activists of the Shiv Sena Hindustan held a protest against the increase in prices of food items and essential commodities on Wednesday. The demonstration was lead by president Dimple Kohli. Vipin Hindu, Vikas Dewan, Kulbir Chib, Rajan Gupta, Shiv Kumar, Parveen Gupta, Romesh Chander, Rahul and Purshottam participated in the protest.

Tributes paid: The CPM paid rich tributes to prominent social and political leader Chaman Lal Kantroo, who died here on Wednesday morning. CPM state secretary MY Tarigami presided over the function and recalled the contributions of Kantroo.
