Abohar
Annual day celebrated
: The first annual day of St. Alphonsa Convent School was celebrated on Monday. Rev. Dr Kurian C. Muttathupadam Episcopal was the chief guest. He is Episcopal Vicar for higher education of the Diocese of Jalandhar which has more than 100 schools in Punjab and parts of Himachal Pradesh. Kids Hardik Batra and Divyanka Sharma welcomed the chief guest. Children of the age group 2-4 showed their talent. Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions. The recipients included Anirudh Gagneja, Mannat Vij, Yogesh Baghla, Purva Chopra, Aayush Chhokra, Divyanka Sharma, Avinav Kumar, Yashwardhan Singh and Ashish Sehgal.

Seminar held
Bharat Vikas Parishad organised a seminar on Sunday at Malout Institute of Management Information Technology (MIMIT) on Guru Tegh Bahadur’s supreme sacrifice. A souvenir ‘Shardhanjalai’ edited by Prof Harnek Singh Komal was also released on the occasion. 

GGS girls win prizes: Gitanjali Sharma has been adjudged the best student at the north region ISTE convention held at RIET, Ropar. Rani Kaur won two silver medals in 2009 Khalsa sports held at takht Shri damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo. Dr Narinder Singh, director, GGS group and Dr BS Dhaliwal, principal GGSCET has congratulated the two prize winning girls. Sardar Sukhraj Singh, member, management committee, GGS group of institutes, said it was a heartening development as improvement of women’s condition was a priority in Punjab as the low female to male ration in the state is a matter of concern. 

Army recruitment: Screening for Army officers’ recruitment was held at Guru Gobind Singh College of Engineering and Technology, Talwandi Sabo, on November 20. About 70 students from various engineering colleges in the region participated. The screening team was headed by Colonel Navdeep Khiccher of the Army. Selected students will be recommended for the final interview by the Services selection Board and then for medical examination. 

Trekkers return: A team from the Bathinda unit of Youth Hostel Association of India, West Bengal, led by Neel Kanth, returned from a 12-day trek to the Kanchenjunga mountain range in Himalayas near Darjeeling. Around 100 trekkers from across the country took part in the programme to spread the message of national integration and brotherhood. Sham Lal Kamboj and Sandeep Parmar, president and former president of the Association, respectively, received the Bathinda team here on Monday. On the occasion, Kamboj said a 7-member team would be taking part in a trekking expedition to the Western Ghats in December.

Eyes donated :
Family of the late Sardarni Krishan Kaur Jaggi donated her eyes to the Punar Jot Eye Bank Society, Ludhiana, recently. She had been a philanthropist to the core. She was a religious lady and believed in helping the poor and the needy.

266 cases settled in lok adalat:
As many as 529 cases of various nature were reported in the 147th lok adalat held at the court complex here and its subdivisions - Dasuya and Garhshanker - today, in which 266 cases were settled amicably and a sum of Rs 67,71,403 awarded to the parties through settlement. The District and Sessions Judge, S.K. Goel said till date 147 lok adalats had been organised in the district and 42,600 cases disposed off amicably. Award/compensation to the tune of Rs 96,45,12,070 had been awarded to the parties. 

Saamna slammed: Former minister and senior Congress leader Naresh Thakur has lashed out at Saamna, the mouthpiece of Shiv Sena, for describing batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar not a genuine Maharashtrian. “Does Saamna or Shiv Sena have a right to declare the nationality or identification of any Indian,” asked Naresh Thakur. “To drag such a personality in narrow and dirty politics was a shameful act of some of the so-called politicians,” he added. He warned leaders of the Shiv Sena not to indulge in narrow politics for petty gains. 

2-day workshop on human rights: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRCI) would organise a two-day workshop to spread awareness and facilitate assessment and enforcement of human rights at Hoshiarpur. It would be held on November 30 to December 1, 2009. In a press release, Deputy Commissioner Megh Raj said acting chairperson Justice G.P. Mathur, Secretary General Akhil Kumar Jain and Director Administration of NHRC Sanjay Dubey would participate. Officers concerned would present a power point presentation and provide information about the works done by their respective departments.

Martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur
: The Bharat Vikas Parishad, Punjab North, organised a function regarding the martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur yesterday. While, Sarwan Singh Phillaur, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, was the chief guest, Yash Pal Gupta presided over the function. Gurcharan Singh Gill, former Additional Advocate-General of the Rajasthan High Court, was among the distinguished guests present on the occasion. More than 25 teams from different districts of the state participated in the “Hind Di Chadar” contest. The team of Kajal of Nawanshahr district stood first, while Sarthi Bhalla’s team of Sujanpur district bagged the second place. These teams will participate in the all-India level contest scheduled to be held in the near future. Speaking on the occasion, Phillaur said rulers of the time were cruel and were carrying out forced conversions. Kashmiri Pandits approached Guru Teg Bahadur with a request to stop this injustice and the Guru sacrificed his life for their cause.

450 examined at eye camp:
A free eye check-up camp was organised at Dr BL Kapur Memorial Hospital yesterday.
Nearly 450 patients were examined at the camp. Dr Sidhu said patients, who needed to be operated upon, would be admitted to the hospital and cost of their surgical procedures, along with medicines, intra-ocular lens and food will be borne by the hospital. Others present at the occasion were Kapil Sharma, Raghbir Singh Toor and Dharam Pal.

Artificial limbs distributed:The 796th artificial limbs distribution camp was organised at Viklang Sahayata Kender, Rishi Nagar, Ludhiana, yesterday. Bharat Vikas Parishad distributed artificial limbs, callipers, tricycles, wheelchairs and hearing aids to about 45 differently abled persons. Narinder Mittal from Viklang Sahayata said the kender had distributed artificial limbs and other aids to more than 30,000 differently abled persons.

Protest rally on Nov 27
: Employees of different departments have been organising meetings in view of the Chandigarh rally on November 27. The rally is being held on the call of Punjab Mulazam Sangarsh Committee to support the demands of employees including rejection of privatisation policies, re-consideration of the 5th Pay Commission report as rights of class III and IV employees were ignored, opening of new recruitment requirement in different departments and paying all dues of employees that were pending since 2006.

Science City tour for students:
Local NGO “Helping Hands Charitable Trust” with active support from philanthropist Raman Murgai organised an educational tour of poor students to Science City in Kapurthala on Sunday. As many as 45 students of the local Doaba Arya Senior Secondary School along with their teachers participated in the tour, informed trust chairman Tejinderpal Singh. 

Car gutted: A Scorpio car standing near Bhangal Kalan village was gutted in fire on Monday. Car owner Satwinder Singh of Mirpur Lakha village said he had come to demarcate a piece of land. While he was busy doing that, he saw smoke emanating from the car. He tried to open the bonnet but in vain. Soon, the flames started rising, consequently, reducing the car to ashes, before the arrival of the fire brigade from Nawanshahr.

Blood donation:
24 persons donated blood at a blood donation camp organised at Sri Guru Arjan Dev Khalsa Senior Secondary School here on Saturday. The donors include 16 NCC cadets. Wg-Cdr S.K. Wachani presided over the camp, while Dr Ashok Kumar Gupta, Senior Medical Officer (SMO) of the Civil Hospital, inaugurated the camp. Narinder Singh, Principal of the school, thanked the guests and the donors. NCC cadets organised a rally in the town for creating awareness among the people on blood donation. Students of different schools and colleges also organised a rally against drug menace and for creating awareness among the people about observing traffic rules.

Grand finale of global festivals
: Eminent visitors including Nusrat Ali, general secretary of the Jamaat-e-Islam-Hind, Honda CL, Artists from Mumbai presenting group dance during the closing ceremony of Global Festival in Shantivan, Abu Road executive, Sunil Yadav and former MP Ganesh Prasad from Bihar besides senior academicians joined Brahmakumaris chief Dadi Janaki and additional chief administrator Dadi Hridyamohini in lighting candles while pledging that they would work for strengthening communal harmony, national integration and peace in the continent. This marked end of the two-day grand finale of global festivals in the Diamond Hall of Shantivan complex at Mount Abu late on Sunday night.

Jewellery shop looted: A jewellery shop in Sector 19 here was reportedly looted on Monday. The police has registered a case, but no arrests have been made so far. The owner of the showroom, Anil, said when he opened his shop, he found things scattered and jewels missing. The miscreants had reportedly dug a tunnel from outside right into the floor of the showroom. There is a nullah beside the showroom from where the tunnel was dug. 

FATEHABAD
Farmer killed
: A farmer was killed following a property dispute in Ladhuwas village here on Sunday. The victim has been identified as Jasbir Singh. His wife Sarabjit Kaur has alleged that Dilbag Singh, his two sons, Harbans and Bhagwant, Dilbag’s brother Chhinda, nephew Resham Singh, Bohar Singh, Mukhtiar Singh and at least 17 others came to their residence on Sunday and forcibly started construction on the way to his fields. She alleged that when her husband objected, they opened fire at him. The police on Monday arrested four persons - Dilbag, Jagtar, Satnam and Mukhtiar.

Cultural troupe returns
: The cultural troupe of University of Jammu that participated in the inter-university north zone cultural youth festival at Kurukshetra University in Kurukshetra returned here on Monday with seven prizes in different events. This was stated by cultural secretary of the varsity Rameshwari Slathia. 

Data bank for Tawi: The Environmental Committee of the state Assembly on Monday expressed the need for creating a baseline data bank for the Tawi river, encompassing water and air analysis along with environmental impact assessment and solid quantification of effluents and solid waste into the river. The committee also observed that the religious sanctity of the Tawi be maintained at all costs.

Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank in a message on the eve of the martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur has urged people to imbibe the spirit of sacrifice shown by the ninth Sikh Guru. He said Guru Tegh Bahadur had sacrificed his life for the culture and religion of the country, and countrymen should follow his great ideals.
