P’kula youth killed in car crash
Banur, November 9 He along with two other friends, studying in the same institute, was on his way to the college in a Maruti Alto car when the incident happened. The car hit a tree after veering off road near Kot Ise Khan village, near Banur. According to police officials from the Banur police station, who reached the scene after the crash, the car skidded off road due to rain. The vehicle hit a tree in the fields. The victims were taken to a nearby private hospital by some passersby and the police where doctors declared Karan Sachdeva brought dead. The others received treatment at the hospital. The other two youths have been identified as Nitin Sharma and Kamal Kant, both residents of Chandigarh. The police informed the family members of the victims about the incidence. The police officials said the body of the deceased had been handed over to the family after conducting a post-mortem examination. |

Legal services day celebrated
Patiala, November 9 Addressing the seminar, Virender said the main objective of organising programme on this day is to make people aware about their legal rights and the welfare schemes of the government. Virender explained the different provisions of the Legal Services Authority Act, 1987. He further said in Patiala, 697 lok adalats have been held so far, in which 1,23,352 cases were taken up and out of these 87,851 cases have been disposed off amicably. Khattra also shared his views regarding the different aspects of the legal system. Additional District and Sessions Judge, Patiala, Harpreet Kaur Jiwan informed the audience about the rights of women and about the various welfare schemes started by Government for the welfare of women. President of the Patiala Bar Association Rakesh Gupta also expressed his views on this occasion. |

BKU demands increase in paddy MSP
Fatehgarh Sahib, November 9 State president of the union Pishora Singh said a mere Rs 20 increase in the price of wheat was not enough as this would serve no purpose to farmers. He said the government publicised for 1121 variety of paddy and it was stated that this variety need less water and is quite useful for farmers but due to low MSP farmers are forced to sell it to sheller owners at a low price. He said the government must purchase this variety at a price of Rs 3,000 per quintal. He said the Rs 50 bonus should also be converted into Rs 250 for the benefit of farmers. He also demanded minimum support price as Rs 250. |

35 taxis challaned in one month
Fatehgarh Sahib, November 9 He said 35 such taxis plying on roads were awarded heavy fine of Rs 2,69,700 last month. Seven taxis out of 35 were told to deposit fee to get new permit. He said the owners of those vehicles who do not deposit the requisite fee would be dealt with an iron hand under the Motor Vehicle Act. He also pointed out that 49 tourist buses, which failed to pay tax at barrier, were also awarded challan of Rs 4,39,500. |

Cash-for-job scam
Chandigarh, November 9 Taking up a petition by Karamjit Singh, the Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur and Justice Mahesh Grover, also the notice to UT police chief, administration, and SHO of the police station where the case regarding cash-for-job scam has been registered. The case will come for further hearing on December 1. The petitioner, Karamjit Singh, said there were thin chances of fair, transparent and effective investigation of the case conducted by the Chandigarh police. Petitioner also demanded a stay on the ongoing process of the selection of teachers in UT education department. Chandigarh police, he said, was under the influence of high ups and was not conducting the investigation in fair manner. He further claimed there were strong probabilities that other high-ups of Chandigarh administration were also involved in the scam. Demanding the CBI probe, counsel for the petitioner contended to unearth the scam, the matter be investigated from the independent agency like the CBI. Chandigarh police had registered a case under Section 120 and 420 of the IPC against Jolly and Hardev Singh in the Industrial Area police station on a complaint of Kharar resident. |

Chandigarh, November 9 The sentence was pronounced by Additional District and Sessions Judge Raj Rahul Garg, who had convicted him a day before for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 (II) and Section 218 (public servant framing incorrect record) of the IPC. The incident that shook the entire police department, a Mani Majra resident, Anil Kumar (21), who was picked up on suspicion by the police, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at the Mani Majra police station. The youth was picked up for verification of his antecedents and had died after jumping from the second floor of the police station within hours of his detention. The family had alleged that the sub-inspector tortured him, which lead to his death. The court took a strong exception at the way the police had dealt with the case as it had not only insisted it to be a suicide but Narinder even tried to fudge the entries of Anil’s detention made in the police station records. |

Safari-Scooter Mishap
Chandigarh, November 9 The police said a case of causing injuries due to rash and negligent driving had been registered against Raghav Mehra, the driver of the Tata Safari (CH 04 A 4270). He was arrested and later released on bail. The case was registered on a complaint lodged by Sohan Lal of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26. He said the car had hit the scooter ridden by the victims, Pooja Sharma and her pillion rider Shafarnanma. Meanwhile, a pedestrian Juveda of Colony No. 5, was injured after being knocked down by an unidentified motor cycle near her locality on
Saturday. She was admitted to the hospital. A case has been registered. |

Rs 55,000 stolen from gurdwara
Panchkula, November 9 When the priest reached to open the gurdwara this morning he found that the lock on the main door was broken. The locks put on “golak” were also found broken and money estimated to be around Rs 55,000 was missing. A case has been registered. |

Man held for snatching
Chandigarh, November 9 Nishi Kant, a jawan in the ITBP camp, Panchkula, reported to the police that Sandeep of Mani Majra bashed him up and snatched Rs 24,000 from him near the Shani Mandir on Sunday afternoon. He caught hold of the accused and informed the police. The police has arrested the accused and registered a case
against him.
Theft
Gulshan Kumar of Mani Majra reported that someone had stolen a computer, a digital camera, a gas cylinder, Rs 5,000, a laptop, a chequebook and some important documents from the Old Indira Colony, Mani Mjara, last night. A case has been registered.
Gambling
The police has arrested Ashok Kumar of Kuldeep Colony, Kajehri, on Sunday on the charges of indulging in gambling. The police has also recovered Rs 7,360 from him. A case under the Gambling Act has been registered.
Liquor seized
The police has arrested Jaswinder Singh of Mohali from near Gate No. 1, Panjab University, on Sunday while carrying five cartons of whisky and a carton of beer. The police said he was carrying the liquor in a Mahindra Pick-Up (CH-04-B-8754). |

U-17 Junior Nehru Hockey Tournament
Chandigarh, November 9 In the one-sided affair, Gurjinder Singh, captain of the Chandigarh team, sounded the board in the fourth minute of the game by converting the penalty corner. Soon after, Gagandeep Singh (Sr) who scored five goals, scored three successive field goals in the eighth, 11th and 14th minutes, giving 5-0 lead to his team in the first half of the game. In the second half, Chandigarh boys again started with aggression, as Gagandeep Singh (Sr) again sounded the board in the 37th minute through a field goal. Thereafter, Gurjant Singh, Kanwaldeep Singh, Gagandeep Singh and Gurjinder scored field goals in the 48th, 52nd, 58th and 61st minutes. Kanwaldeep scored his individual second goal in the 65th minute and later Gagandeep (Sr) scored his individual fifth goal in the 66th minute. Finally, Gurjant and Sehajpreet Singh scored in the 67th and 69th minute of the game, respectively, to seal the fate of the Delhi team in the pool L match. Chandigarh boys got seven penalty corners but were able to convert only three, whereas Delhi team got a penalty corner in the 52nd minute but failed to open their account. In the first match of the day, Lyallpur Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar, defeated SS High School, Ranchi, 3-0 in pool K of the of the tournament. Jalandhar’s Amandeep Singh scored the first goal in the 30th minute by converting the first penalty corner to take 1-0 lead in the first half. In the second half, Amandeep scored the second goal in the 43rd minute through a penalty corner and finally Kuldeep scored a field goal in the 69th minute of the match. In another match, Birsa Munda Vidyapitha, Orissa, beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar, by one goal. Both teams played an attacking game but could not convert the chances they got in the first half. However, in the second half the Orissa boys took 1-0 lead as their captain Stali Victor Minz sounded the board in the 45th minute. Also, Bangladesh Krira Shikka Protishtan, Bangladesh, and BGUS Senior Secondary School, Tarn Taran, played a draw, as both teams scored one goal each. Bangladesh’s Md Milon Hossain scored the field goal for his team in the 28th minute of the first half. However, three minutes later, Tarn Taran’s Amrit Pal Singh scored the equalizer through a field goal. Both teams got a penalty corner each in the second half of the game but could not capitalise on these. |

UP beat Gujarat by 77 runs
Chandigarh, November 9 In reply, Gujarat’s batswomen faltered in front of some accurate bowling by UP players and could score only 58 runs in 21.3 for the loss of six wickets. Sarvi and Shaheen scored 18 and 6 runs, respectively, while UP’s Pooja, Rachna and Farhat took two wickets each by giving away 12, 8 and 11 runs, respectively. Chandigarh, November 9 Stating this here today, JS Lamba, general secretary, BBSPA, said matches in both junior and senior categories would be held at Sri Guru Gobind Singh Senior Secondary School, Sector 35-B. He said players born on or after January 1, 1991 were eligible for Junior State Championship and the matches would start at the venue at 8 am. He added that interested players should deposit the entry fee with him. Kumar said after the Senior State Championship, Chandigarh team (men and women) would be selected for the three-day 55th Senior National Ball Badminton Championship to be held at Kaddapa in Andhra Pradesh from January 9. |
