AMRITSAR
SGPC meeting on November 12:
The SGPC has called a meeting pertaining to Nanakshahi calender with various sikh religious organisations at Teja Singh Samundari Hall, inside the Golden Temple, on November 12. SGPC president Avtar Singh said various Sikh organisations would come together to mull over various aspects of the calender. He urged them to bring mistakes or missing points in the calender in writing.

Bathinda
Peace ambassadors appointed:
Dr Zora Singh and Tajinder Kaur, chairman and vice- chairperson, respectively of the Desh Bhagat Group of Institutes, have been appointed Peace Ambassadors by the Universal Peace Federation and the Inter-religious and International Federation for World Peace. Dr Zora Singh has set up 17 education institutes in Mandi Gobindgarh, Moga and Muktsar.

Book release: The book release and discussion on the Hindi novel 'Tinka-Tinka' will take place at the Press Club, Chandigarh, on November 15. The novel explores the mindset behind riots and the boundaries of human rights. Editor of Dainik Tribune Naresh Kaushal will preside over the function while noted litterateur Ramesh Kuntal Megh will be the chief guest on the occasion.

Free eye check-up camp: The Goodwill Society organised a free eye check-up camp here on Sunday. Nearly 962 patients were examined at the camp while 165 were recommended for operation. Free medicines were also distributed among the patients. The camp was inaugurated by Jaswinder Billa Vaastukar, a social worker.

Seminar on human rights: A seminar on human rights was organised at the Des Raj Government Secondary School here on Sunday. Suresh Gaur from Human Rights Protection Organisation explained about the importance of human rights. Other speakers were Malwinder Kaur, Prof Dhanvant Kaur and Bansi Lal. The seminar was organised by Santosh Sharma, a activist of the organisation.

Annual function: Kids care, a play way and preparatory school, organised its annual function on Sunday. Principal of the Sanawar School was the chief guest on the occasion. The tiny-tots presented a colourful show and enthralled the audience.

Lecture on window dressing: Baba Farid College of Management & Technology, Bathinda, organised a guest lecture on the topic of window dressing in accounts. The lecture was delivered by Dr Mahesh Chand Garg, reader, Haryana School of Business, Guru Jambeshwar University, Hisar. He briefed the students about methods and drawbacks of window dressing. Dr Jasbir S Hundal, director-principal (integrated campus) facilitated the guest speaker and thanked for explaining the technicalities of the topic.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
One killed in accident:
A resident of Rajpura was killed in an accident on Sunday morning while another received serious injuries. The deceased has been identified as Gopal Krishan of Gandhi Colony who was on his way towards a local hospital on his bike when he was hit by a speeding vehicle while trying to cross the Patiala-Chandigarh road. Another Harpreet Singh of power colony sitting behind him received serious injuries in the accident and was rushed to a private hospital.

Hanumangarh/Abohar
Birthday of Satya Sai Baba:
The district-level Vishav Shanti Sarv Dharam Akhand Bhajan, organised by Shri Satya Sai Seva Samiti, concluded in Sangria today. The Akhand bhajan was organised as part of celebrations of 84th birthday of Satya Sai Baba. Hundreds of devotees from Rawla, Rawatsar, Raisinghnagar, Hanumangarh, Sriganganagar and Padampur participated in bhajan singing for 24 hours. Mangla aarti was performed by Dr OP Sharma, district president Sriganganagar, Jitender Sharma Padampur and Gyan Parkash Godara.

Book exhibition:
A book exhibition was organised at the A S College for Women, here, recently wherein books of various writers were put on display. The exhibition was organised under the banner of ‘Jan Chetna’ wherein books on the Marxism, Punjab, Hindi and English literature, highlighting personalities like Munshi Prem Chand, freedom fighters and other Indian renowned writers were arranged.

Science fair:
Students of Government Senior Secondary School excelled in the district-level science fair organised at Mandi Gobindgarh. School principal Netar Singh said in model making of information and communication by artificial satellite Manpreet Kaur and Manpreet jointly stood first. In developing energy from biomass model making Mohit Kumar and Satbir Singh stood second. In carom board model making Harjot Singh and Shammi Singh bagged third position. In global warming model making Harpreet Singh and Kiranbir Singh came third.

Three colonisers booked:
Three persons were booked today for illegally carving out private colony on PUDA land in Daun village. In his complaint to the SSP, Mohali, the administrator of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) had stated that colonisers Bhupinder Pal Singh from Phase II in Mohali, Praveen Kumar Agnihotri, managing director of Modern Planner Private Limited, and Harbans Kaur and Anil Kumar, both from Daun village, had illegally carved out a colony on PUDA land in Daun village. They had illegally taken possession of the aforesaid land and had violated the Punjab and Apartment and Property Regulatory Act, 1995. A case has been registered.

Two booked for assault: The police has booked two people for beating up an employee of Thunder Zone - a fun and entertainment park, near Swara village here. In his complaint to the police, Gurjinder Singh, a resident of Chuhar Majra village, stated that on November 6 he was returning home on cycle after attending his duty at Thunder Zone when Bhupinder Singh and Surinder Singh, both from Chuhar Majra village, stopped him and allegedly beat him up.

Rs 5,500 stolen: About Rs 5,500 cash was stolen from the office of a tubewell operator in Khasepur village. In his complaint to the police, Paramjit Singh, a resident of Teor village, who is deployed as pump attendant at Khasepur village, stated that on November 6 he had kept Rs 5,500 cash in the cupboard of his office. He went to the village to collect bills and on his return he saw the lock of his office broken and the cash missing. The police has registered a case.

Ludhiana
Stamp vendors strike:
The stamp vendors welfare association would go on two days strike from November 12 if the government failed to restore their limit of buying stamp papers. In a communiqué issued here on Friday, its office-bearers said they would discuss the matter with the state government and if it failed to act they would lodge a protest on these two days.

Mandi Ahmedgarh
Date extended:
The last date for submitting applications for Swami Vivekanand Youth Award - 2010, being organised by Swami Vivekanand Study Circle, Ludhiana, has been extended to November 10. Viney Sofat, convener of the annual event, said the date was extended in view of the late commencement of academic session of BEd colleges of the state. The awards are conferred on outstanding students of various universities and colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh every year.

Mansa
Awareness campaign:
Nehru Yuva Kendra has organised awareness campaing at some villages of Mansa district like Jatana Kalan, Ubha and Gurne Kalan comprising seminars and debate competitions. Nearly 60 youths had participated in the functions. Jaswinder Singh, sub-inspector, vigilance, was the chief guest. He appealed to the youth to fight against corruption.

PATIALA
Governing body:
On the instructions of Capt Amarinder Singh, who is patron of the Aitchisonian Yadavindrian Old Students Association of Yadavindra Public School, the governing body has been changed with immediate effect. As per a letter signed by Capt Amarinder, the new body would be presided over by Union Minister and Chandigarh MP Pawan Kumar Bansal, whereas IPS officer Dinkar Gupta has been named vice-president for a term of two years.

Certification:
The Sadbhavna College of Education here got a shot in the arm when Norsk Akkreditering of Norway awarded ISO 9001: 2008 for its quality management system recently. Dr AK Banerjee and Dr Madhumita started the college in 2004 with an objective of contributing towards rural development through education and health.

Celebrated: Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, celebrated the birthday of Guru Nanak on the school premises with fervour today. A three-day Akhand path culminated which was followed by cultural programme, including shabad kirtan, poetry, debate etc. 

Elected: Amarjeet Singh Babbal was elected as the president of the Cooperative Agriculture Service Society during elections of the society on Sunday at Nogawan village. Other members elected in these elections were Kulwinder Singh Alampur (vice-president), Jagmohan Singh Nogawan, Swaran Singh Nanheri, Amar Singh Rampur Kaleran, Ram Krishan Singh and Jaspreet Singh as members. The newly elected president was also honoured by the Sirhind MLA.

ZIRAKPUR
Gurmat Samagam:
The three-day Third Gurmat Samagam to commemorate the tercentenary of martyrdom of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur will be held at Pabhat stadium here from November 13. The programme will be organised by Sikh Virsa Sambhal Sewa Society. Sant Baljit Singh Dadu Sahib wale and Giani Surjit will deliver discourses during the samagam. Guru ka langar will be served on all three days. — TNS

Mohali
2 guards electrocuted:
Two security guards died after an electricity pole fell on them in the Industrial Area, Phase VIII, late on Sunday. The mishap took place when a recklessly driven canter hit the pole. The victims were sitting next to the pole when it fell on them. Both died on the spot.

Jat mahasabha meet:
A meeting of national executive of the Akhil Bhartiya Jaat Mahasabha will be held at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh on November 9 in which last touch will be given to the preparations of Jaat Aarakshan rally to be held in New Delhi soon.Hawa Singh Sangwan, spokesman of the Mahasabha informed that senior leaders from the country would attend the meeting.

KURUKSHETRA
Tributes paid:
Tributes were paid on the occasion of the 25th Remembrance Day of November 1984 Riots at a condolence meeting organised by the Haryana Sikh Forum, Kurukshetra, on the premises of Shri Guru Ram Dass Sarai here on Saturday. The meeting was presided over by president of the Haryana Sikh Forum, Kurukshetra unit, Col Balbir Singh. The meeting expressed grief over those who were killed in 1984 riots and sympathy for their kin. In a unanimously passed resolution, the meeting demanded compensation to the victims’ families. The meeting also demanded that the culprits should be sternly punished and the government should initiate such steps that such incidents not be repeated.

REWARI
Employee crushed to death:
Virender Singh (40), an employee of Hero Honda Motors Ltd, Dharuhera, was crushed to death reportedly by a vehicle of the company on the Rewari-Mahendergarh road at Kharagwas village, 4 km from here, on Saturday night. Police sources said Virender was run over by the vehicle when he was making a bid to enable his colleague Sat Pal to board the vehicle which was going to Dahina. The police has registered a case of causing death by negligence against the vehicle driver.

3 peacocks electrocuted: As many as three peacocks were electrocuted when they incidentally touched a high-tension wire at Khol village, 27 km from here, on Friday evening. The irate villagers have demanded insulation of the recently laid HT wire whose nakedness, they contended, was threatening the lives of the residents as well as the birds.

Seminar concludes:
A two-day seminar on ‘Consumer Protection in India’ organised by the Department of Public Administration and Centre for Haryana Studies of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) concluded here with a resolve to boost the consumer protection movement in India. This national seminar was organised in collaboration with Indian Institute of Public Administration (New Delhi). Prof Suresh Mishra, Director, Consumer Protection Centre, Indian Institute of Public Administration said that consumer protection was required to be made a global movement. Teachers and scholars from universities and parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pardesh, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, attended this two day event.

SIRSA
2 killed in mishap:
Two persons were killed when an unidentified vehicle hit their Maruti Car near Alika village here on Saturday. The dead have been identified as Ram Kumar and Rai Singh of Godikan village. The two were returning to their village when some unidentified vehicle hit their car in front of Dera Baba Satpal near Alika Canal. The police has registered a case and handed over the bodies of victims to their kin after postmortem.

SONEPAT
Notices issued:
Four petrol pumps - Mohana petrol pump at Mohana, Khajan Seva Kendra at Tazpur, Shaheed Laxman Petrol pump at Murthal and Ashu Kisan petrol pump at Nahri - were served notices after detecting irregularities during raids conducted by a team of the Food and Civil Supplies Department led by DFSC NK Mittal at various petrol pumps here on Saturday. According to DFSC, the owners of these petrol pumps were asked to submit their replies within a week. The team had also lifted samples of petrol and diesel from as many as 15 petrol pumps and these samples had been sent to laboratory for testing. The raids were conducted following complaints of adulteration in petrol and diesel and also of fault in the measuring machines installed at the pumps, he added.

Hall for border residents:
As part of the Army’s efforts for uplift of residents of border villages, two projects for the construction of a community hall at Samka village and toilets with all modern facilities at Government Primary School, Kadial (RS Pura), were undertaken by the Miran Sahib Brigade under the aegis of the Tiger Division.The function was attended by a number of prominent civilians and villagers.

Farewell visit: GOC of the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps, Lt-Gen Bikram Singh,on Saturday paid a farewell visit to the office of the Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (PCDA), Northern Command, Jammu. He was received by Gautam Sen, PCDA, Northern Command, and other senior officers. In his address, the GOC mentioned about the cordial relations between the Army in the valley and the PCDA’s office.

Girl found hanging: A young girl was found hanging in her house in Durga Nagar in Chinore here on Saturday. Official sources said Richa Kumari (20), daughter of Ved Pal, was found hanging with a ceiling fan. The victim had not done well in her college exams, they added.
