Abohar
Doctor dies of suffocation:
Dr Himani Bhalla of sector 38-A in Chandigarh died of suffocation reportedly due to leakage in the gas-based geyser while taking bath at her parental house on Thursday evening. As per the details, she got married to a Chandigarh-based doctor Rahul Bhalla about two years back and had a three-month-old child as well. She had arrived here on the eve of Diwali. Her relatives checked when she did not come out of the bathroom even after half an hour. The door of the bathroom was broken with the help of neighbours. She was found lying unconscious and was rushed to a private hospital but could not be saved. Her body was cremated here today.

Ekta Diwas: The 25th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi will be observed as Ekta Diwas by Punjab unit of the Congress Sewa Dal, state organising secretary Hamohinder Singh Grover informed on Friday. Giving details, he said Rajinder Rasrania, chief organiser of the Sewa Dal in Punjab on Thursday held discussions with the union minister and national in-charge Mukul Wasnik at New Delhi, along with the chief patron Mohinder Joshi. UPA government ministers and other senior leaders of the party will be invited for the community welfare programmes, to be held on October 25. All the district presidents have been asked to arrange at least one function to pay homage to former PM Indira Gandhi.

College library: Women rights activists have come forward to enrich the library in the Gopi Chand Arya Mahila College here. Vidya Chaudhary, president of the Mahila Suraksha Samiti, who had been fighting for the cause of women suffering from dowry menace for last three decades, on Friday inaugurated the stack-room of the fully air-conditioned library in the campus. She had donated Rs 3.5 lakh for the project. Her daughters Kanta Singhmar and Anju Bhupal along with the wing commander Dharamveer Singhmar (retd) and Sanjeev Bhupal had especially arrived to grace the function. Another social activist Sheila Chaudhary, daughter-in-law of the former municipal council president Dr Shriram Chaudhary, was also present on the occasion. She had donated Rs 3.47 lakh for the library reading room. Principal Dr Neelam Arun Mittu said she felt delighted over the way women activists were responding to her request for cooperation. Veena Ahuja, daughter-in-law of philanthropist Gopi Chand Ahuja was also present. Vidya Chaudhary administered oath to budding student leaders while decorating them with badges. Lecturer Raj Kumar Ahuja conducted the programme.

Bathinda
Gopashtami celebrations:
Gopashtami celebrations would be held in Sirki Bazaar, Bathinda. The programme would begin with the beginning of a tableaux march on Saturday and will conclude on Monday with the performance of traditional rituals, bhajan contest, presentation of mementoes etc.

Sukhminder KaurBereaved: Sukhminder Kaur (79), widow of Captain Dr Bhagwant Singh, Civil Surgeon, (retd), a noted personality of the city, died due to cardiac arrest here on Friday. The deceased is survived by her only son Dr Tejwant Singh Dhillon, medical officer, Civil Hospital, Nathana. New info commissioner:
The Punjab Government has appointed Jaspal Kaur State Information Commissioner. Disclosing this here on Friday, a spokesman of the state government said the terms and conditions of her appointment would be notified later.

Ranike’s assurance to vets: Punjab Animal Husbandry Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike on Friday gave an assurance on the implementation of the non-practising allowance for government veterinarians as per the recommendations of the fifth pay commission.The minister gave the assurance to a deputation of the Punjab State Veterinary Officers Association led by its vice-president, Dr Santokh Singh, general secretary Sukhdev Singh and press secretary Gurinder Singh Walia.

Spinning mills: The state government has decided that no registration will be required in future for spinning mills under the Punjab Agriculture Produce Markets Act, 1962, and amendments will be made to the relevant Act or rules. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal took a decision to this effect at a meeting with a delegation of the Northern India Textile Mills Association led by its president SP Oswal here.

Grievance panels: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal would be the chairman of the District Grievances Redressal Committees of Jalandhar and Bathinda districts. Disclosing this here on Friday, a spokesman of the state government said a notification in this regard had been issued.

Dr Umesh Wadhwa, MD, Homoeopathy, has been nominated as member of the Council of Homoeopathic Systems of Medicines, Punjab. He has been practising homoeopathy for the past 23 years at his clinic at Bindraban Road, Civil Lines, Ludhiana.

Appointed:
Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh has appointed Dr Daisy Walia as professor and head of the dance department for three years, under the rule of headship by rotation. Earlier Dr Walia was working as principal of Government College of Girls, Patiala.

BILASPUR
Body identified:
The body that was found at Kandraur near here on October 15 has been identified as that of one Krishan Chand, alias Murari Lal, of Chattadoo village in Mandi district. SP Kuldip Sharma said here on Friday the body was recognised by Krishan Chand’s wife Nisha. She has also expressed apprehensions regarding the death of Chand.

CHAMBA
Three booked:
The police registered a case against three persons under Section 498-A and Section 34 of the IPC for subjecting a woman to cruelty. A police press release issued here on Friday revealed that the case was registered on the complaint of one Meenakshi of Mohalla Mai-Ka-Bag of Chamba against her mother-in-law Asha Devi, father-in-law Mool Chand and husband Parveen Kumar, all residents of Delhi. Meenakshi has stated that she was being harassed for not bringing enough dowry, the release stated.

Commemoration Week: To observe Commemoration Week, the police on Friday organised visits of students of eight schools and residents of eight panchayats in the district to various the police stations falling in their respective jurisdictions with a view to apprising them of the working of the Police Department. Besides, special sections of society, including children and women of mahila mandals, were also detailed about functioning of the police under the community-policing scheme called ‘Viswas Yojna’.

Medical camp begins:
A two-day medical camp organised under Operation Sadbhavana by the Army under the aegis of Tiger Division at Badihal Brahmanan village began today. To keep up its tradition of bonding with the residents, the Army organised the camp to provide the much- needed medical aid to the villagers living near the border areas of the RS  Pura sector.

Srinagar
Jobless youth protest against SSRB:
A group of unemployed youths held a protest march at Lal Chowk today against “inordinate delay” in publishing the results of those selected as physical education teachers in schools across the state. Some youths, who took part in the march, said close to 3,000 of them were interviewed by the Service Selection Recruitment Board (SSRB) in September-October last year against 1,875 posts. Even after an year, the result has not been declared.
