Pedestrian hit by truck, dies

Kalka, October 23
A pedestrian was killed after being hit by a recklessly driven truck in the Kalka bazaar today.According to eyewitnesses, Gobind Singh (65), a retired HMT employee, was hit by a chassis truck near the Kausali road T-point. He sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to the Kalka civil hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The body has been kept in the mortuary for the post-mortem.

Gobind Singh was running a scooter-repair shop near the Kali Mata temple. The incident took place at around 7.45 pm when he was returning from his work. The driver fled from the spot after the incident. The truck has been impounded.

One held with 710 pirated CDs

Rajpura, October 23
One person was arrested today with pirated CDs near Shambhu village. Sadar SHO Bikramjeet Singh Brar said the accused was arrested during a special drive against piracy.

He said the raid was conducted in a market on a tip off from where 220 VCDs, 340 DVDs, 150 MP3s have been recovered. The owner of the shop has been identified as Joginder Singh. A case has been registered.

Liquor vend looted; 1 held

Fatehgarh Sahib, October 23
Two unidentified persons looted a liquor vend in Chaleri village today. However, the police managed to nab one of the accused.

Fatehgarh Sahib SSP Kaustubh Sharma said an employee of the liquor vend, Uday Prasad, informed the police that two unidentified miscreants put chillies in his eyes and took away Rs 1,600 from the liquor vend.

A special naka was laid around the village where the loot took place. Within three hours of the incident, one of the accused was arrested. Hunt is on to nab the other accused, said the police. — TNS

Five hurt in group clash

Ambala, October 23
Five persons were injured in a group clash near the court complex in Ambala City today.According to information, members of two groups, who had come to the city for hearing of a divorce case, entered into a scuffle. They attacked each other with sticks and sharp-edged weapons.

The injured have been identified as Barkha Singh, Richpal Singh, Gurucharan Singh, Dhyan Singh and Santokh Singh. They were admitted to the civil hospital. The police has registered a case.

Truckload of apples, driver found missing

A city-based transporter has accused a truck driver of breach of trust after he went missing with a truckload of apples meant for Hyderabad.

Gurmeet Singh, manager, Link Roadways, Grain Market, Sector 26, in a complaint lodged with the police alleged that Dharminder Singh, driver of the truck (HR 38 M 9277), in which 592 boxes of apple were loaded for Hyderabad from the grain market on October 10, had gone missing. He was paid Rs 20,000 in advance for en-route expenses. However, the driver neither reached Hyderabad nor has returned till date. A case has been registered against the truck driver in the Sector 26 police station.

Injured

Shiv Prakash of Sector 35-A in a complaint lodged with the police alleged that Manoj Kumar of Sector 15, who was driving a Tata Indica car, (CH 04 3690) rammed his vehicle into his motorcycle near small rotary on the road dividing Sectors 39 and 40 on Thursday evening. He suffered injuries and was admitted to Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector 16. The accused has been arrested on the chares of causing injuries due to rash and negligent driving.

Scooter stolen

Bhupinder Singh of Sector 20 in a complaint lodged with the police alleged his scooter (CH 01 P 0435) was stolen from Sector 22 on Thursday. A case of theft has been registered in this connection.

Theft

Gabbar Singh Negi of Guru Nanak Fruit Agency, Grain Market, Sector 26, reported that Suraj Bhan had stolen Rs 24,000 from his shop. The accused has been arrested after registering a case against him.

Thieves decamp with 20 LCD monitors

Chandigarh, October 23
Thieves decamped with 20 LCD monitors from a shop in Sector 17 after tying security guard in the wee hours today.

Om Jeevan Gupta, General Manger, HCL Infosys Limited regional office, lodged a complaint with the police in this regard.

He told the police that someone from a gymnasium adjacent to his shop informed him about the theft at his shop at around 5.30 am. A security guard, Ram Kewal Yadav, posted at his office said he had opened the locks of the office at around 5 am. Soon four persons entered the office, tied his hands and decamped with 20 LCD monitors.

The cops along with forensic experts and a dog squad reached the spot and picked up clues. Sector 17 police station SHO said a case of theft and trespassing had been registered against the accused.

A police officer said the security guard’s statement would be verified as no force was applied to overpower him. The timing of the theft had also raised doubts, as people start coming to the gymnasium at the same time when the theft took place.

Punjab team won a silver medal, while Andhra Pradesh and Manipur secured the third place.In the girls under-19 category, Manipur clinched a gold medal, Assam bagged a silver medal, while Punjab and Chandigarh stood third.
