Seizure of spurious sweets, edible oil by health authorities
Confectioners contest dept’s claim
Allege that the “biased” administration doesn’t go for the big fish
Parmod Bharti

Nawanshahr, October 11
Health department officials conducted a raid on a house near Bakkerkhana Road, Teachers Colony, here yesterday where a migratory confectioner, Srinivas, a resident of Churu district (Rajasthan), has been preparing burfi, milk cake, etc. for supplying it to adjoining villages.

The team, led by District Health Officer Dr Ashok Guru, collected samples of sweets and raw materials like skimmed milk, refined oil, dry fruits, etc. Besides, stale sweets stocked by him in a room were also disposed of by the
officials.

But the raids on the sweet shops by the health department for taking samples are being highlighted out of proportion in the vernacular press. Marginal confectioners here have started raising an accusing finger at the health department as well as the media.

Marginal confectioners expressed their resentment over the publication of a news item in a Punjabi daily in which the raid conducted by the department on Saturday was reported as“seizure of 10 quintals of spurious sweets and 11 tins of spurious edible oil”.

Perturbed Srinivas said he had been using ISI-marked skimmed milk and refined oil for preparing burfi, milk cake and matthis, etc.

“Samples of the edible items taken by the officials of the health department were branded ‘spurious’ without waiting for the report from the laboratory,” he lamented.

Besides, the marginal confectioners rued that the officials of the department had just been conducting raids on the establishments of small confectioners who usually prepared khoya and paneer themselves for use in sweets and other items. The department had been ignoring the big fish who had been procuring readymade khoya and paneer etc. in bulk for reasons best known to them, they added.

“If ISI-marked products purchased by them for use in the preparation of sweets and other eatables are spurious, then why haven’t the officials taken action against the errant manufacturers,” they asked.

District Health Officer Dr Ashok Guru, while denying the allegations of discrimination, said in a press release issued by him that there was no mention of the seizure of spurious sweets.

“The method of preparing sweets like burfi and milk cake by using skimmed milk (which is not of a popular brand) and a chemical (decolite chips, commonly called ‘papdi’) is not a normal one,” said Dr Guru, adding that the samples of the skimmed milk and other eatables had been taken and sent to the laboratory for further investigation.

The report would be received within a week and further action taken accordingly.

2 qtls of synthetic khoya seized

Phagwara, October 11
After the seizure of adulterated paneer and khoya in huge quantities in Phagwara during the past few days, the police today again seized two quintals of khoya from four “tokris” near Phagwara railway station.

DSP Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh told newsmen here that the khoya was brought from Muzaffarnagar in UP by three sweet shop owners of the town.

Khakh said after seizing khoya, the police informed doctors of the Civil Hospital who took samples of the khoya for its chemical examination.

Interestingly, though Health Minister Lakshmi Kanta Chawla had instructed the Health Department to launch a campaign against the sale of substandard sweets which were being sold openly in various towns, nothing had been done by the department. It was the police which came forward to launch the campaign to save the lives of the people and started seizing adulterated goods, including khoya and paneer.

Even some “halwais” had kept khoya and sweets in the cold storage for sale in the festival season.

SMO Dr Rajiv Gupta said all required steps were being taken by the Health Department, and the sweet shop owners had been warned in this regard. — OC
