Camp on eye care held
: Keeping in view the increasing number of accidents involving the eye especially during the festive season, the Divine Eye Research Foundation organised an awareness camp in Dhobiana Basti on Friday. Speaking on the occasion, Rakesh Narula of the Foundation cautioned against the use of sharp-edged objects like bow and arrow, needles and pencils by children.

Prof Dr Jai Rup SinghVC chairs int’l conference: Prof Dr Jai Rup Singh, vice-chancellor, Central University of Punjab, chaired the plenary session on 'Ethical and Legal Issues Concerning Disabilities' on October 7 during the 4th International Conference on Birth Defects and Disabilities in the Developing World held from October 4-7 at New Delhi. Delivering a lecture during the session, Dr Jai Rup said despite several UN Declarations on the rights of disabled persons and legal remedies, the disabled persons were constantly sliding to the margin of neglect and helplessness.

Shiksha award
: Mukesh Takkiar was recently awarded the Shiksha Shiromani Award-2009 in New Delhi. The award is given to those who have excelled in the field of teaching. Former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, Korn Dabbaransi, presented the award during a seminar organised by the Institute of Economic Studies at the All-India Habitat Center, New Delhi.

Examined
: At least 844 patients were examined at an eye check-up camp organised by Guru Nanak Charitable Trust at Mullanpur Dakha recently. At least 204 people were operated upon for cataract as well as glaucoma. The Sikh Aid International had provided support for the camp.

Umpire retires: Dr MS Mahal has retired from the BCCI’s panel of umpires. He was selected to the Punjab Cricket Association panel in 1982 and then to BCCI panel in 1986. He has received the Shiromani Punjab Rattan Award (2003), PAU Foundation Day Award for Sports (1997), Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports at University Athletic Meet (2007) and Madhav Gourav Ratna Award Achievement Award by National Sports and Welfare Foundation, New Delhi (2007).

MC vice-chief
: Kedar Nath Kapila was unanimously elected vice-president of the local municipal council. The office of the vice-president had fallen vacant after the term of the former incumbent ended. Fourteen out of 16 members of the council voted for the only candidate fielded by the ruling group led by Usha Sood, president of the council.

Tributes paid: The Chandigarh Management Association (CMA) on Saturday paid tributes to Prof SP Singh, former president and ex-Dean and chairman, University Business School, (PU), who passed away on October 1. Col Karamjit Singh, chairman CMA, said they would be inspired by the departed soul and added that guidelines and directions shown by him had become the focus to their actions.

Conference on human resource development
: The State Cooperative Union Jammu and Kashmir organised a day-long conference on several issues regarding human resource development, education and training programs, infrastructure development and employment generation on Sunday. Minister for Cooperatives Manohar Lal Sharma, who was the chief guest in the function, assured all help to the union. In his address, he stressed upon the role of cooperatives in the development of the state. Chairman of the union Rajesh Sharma highlighted the problems of the farmers. Others who spoke on the occasion included MLA Choudhary Sukhnandan, former MLC Kashmira Singh and Citizen Cooperative Bank chairman Balbir Singh Manhas.

2 held for chain snatching: Two motorcycle borne youths snatched the chain from a woman on Sunday. The police arrested the accused, who were under the heavy influence of smack, from the Gagwal area of Samba district. The accused have been identified as Raj Kumar and Gurnam Singh, both residents of Pathankot. “After the woman raised hue and cry, the cops on duty nabbed both accused,” the police said. “We suspect their involvement in several other cases of chain snatching in Kathua district as well,” they said.

Workshop on climate change
: A three-day international workshop on climate change, glacial retreat and livelihoods - access regionally, act locally is being organised at by the state government in collaboration with the University of Kashmir and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), which begins here on Monday. An official spokesman said: “Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is likely to inaugurate the workshop as chief guest and IPCC chairman RK Pachauri will preside over the function.”

Two found dead: Two GREF personnel died under suspicious circumstances in Leh district. The police said Bhem Singh from Sinra Kola in Goda district, Jharkhand, was found dead at Warila Sakti in Leh. Basand Modi, a driver from West Bengal, was found dead at Sakti in Leh. Cases have been registered.
