Onscreen pals to turn offscreen foes
Kalka, October 8 Both the stars have worked together in Punjabi movies -- ‘Nasibo’ and ‘Long da Lishkara’. Bhagat Singh, son of a former Member Parliament, said Gurdas Mann, in addition to take part in his canvassing, would sing patriotic song ‘Mera rang de basanti chola’. Meanwhile, other contestants, including INLD candidate Pardeep Chaudhary and Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Vijay Bansal, have also stepped up their campaigning. Pardeep Chaudhary, the lone candidate from the Gujjar community, with more than 15,000 voters from the community, is feeling strengthened with three Congress rebels in the fray. Feeling comfortable for the first time, after losing three times from the same seat, Chaudhary claims to have an edge over his rivals for remaining in touch with the people of the area since the past more than one decade while all others are new faces for MLA seat to the electorate. Chaudhry was the nearest rival of Chander Mohan during the previous elections held in 2005 when Panchkula was a part of Kalka assembly before delimitation. Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Vijay Bansal, a Congress rebel, is also set to create worries for his rivals. The work done by Bansal with his former political patron Chander Mohan is to pay dividends at the moment. Meanwhile, it was the first time during the last 16 years that an independent candidate emerged as one of the main contenders since 1993 when Chander Mohan won from here for the first time. Lachhman Singh, father of Bhagat Singh, won from here thrice and registered his victory contesting independently in 1967 and 1982, while in 1977 he entered the state assembly as Janata Party MLA. Lachhman Singh was popularly known as “Pani wala baba” as he was responsible for providing tap water supply to far-flung villages in the area as the public health minister, which earned him the nickname. Now, floating on the popularity earned by his father and gaining success in his fight against the NHAI plan to demolish Kalka Main Bazar, Bhagat Singh is neck and neck with the main contenders. |
